ASUS Laptop P50IJ-X3 Intel Pentium dual-core T4500 (2.30 GHz) 4 GB Memory 320 GB HDD Intel GMA 4500M 15.6

Pros: Excellent value for the typical user. The 1 year accidental warranty is a huge deal at this price range. 4 GB of memory and the 320 GB hard drive are good insurance that 3-4 years down the line this laptop will still be very usable for anybody that does not play current games. ASUS is a solid brand and the overall quality is better than most other manufacturers at this price. Laptop stays cool after running for several hours. Power brick is a conveninent size and cable length is good.

Cons: Screen is very average, but at this price you don't expect it to be above that. Update to the newest Intel drivers, turn down the brightness and turn up the contrast a bit to help with the "washed-out" feeling. Keyboard will take a bit of getting used to but it has a decent enough feel to it. No Windows 7 OS DVD so you are required to make your own backup discs if you want them...and you will want them. Fair amount of proprietary ASUS "programs" that come installed...most are junk unless you are unaware of better alternatives. Onboard video is absolute junk but again, par for the course at this price.

Other Thoughts: Grabbed this model for 430 big ones and couldn't be happier. I had purchased the X2 version of this model for my girlfriend about a year ago and that one is still running great. ASUS is gaining a reputation for reliability and for good reason. I would not hesitate to purchase another of their products.

Pros: Cheap. Looks sweet with the ribbed coolers. Lifetime warranty. Works when you adjust the voltage to above the specified 1.5v.

Cons: Does not run at 1600 at 9-9-9-24 at 1.5v. Running on an ASUS M4A79XTD EVO that had a different model set of G.SKILL 1600 with same timings and voltage that ran great for nearly a year. I built another machine and gave up that set and purchased this set because it was cheap and figured it would be about the same. After setting speed and timings in BIOS with voltage on AUTO, blue screened every time and came up with errors in MEMTEST. Set the voltage to 1.6v and everything is smooth sailing so far. Passed MEMTEST and Windows has been solid for 24 hours straight.

Other Thoughts: I RMA'd the first set thinking it was faulty because of how my motherboard reacted to this RAM after a very similar set worked fine for so long. Not sure why this set needs extra voltage while the other didn't...but it works. I guess I can live with that.

Pros: LED backlight is efficient and allows the chassis to be thin. Colors can be decent after some tweaking. Touch screen buttons are a nice touch...weird at first but as soon as you start using them it is pretty straightforward and they function well. Price was enticing on sale. Very lightweight.

Cons: Out of the box, the backlight is set to blind you and wash out all the color. My particular product has a large amount of backlight bleeding on the right side...very noticeable on a black screen but not as distracting once in Windows. The screen border is way too thick and looks poorly designed. Uses an external power brick, I assume because they tried to make the screen as thin as possible but I thought we had left this type of design years ago.

Other Thoughts: If you can get it for around a benjamin it's a pretty good deal, but don't pay much more or you might be slightly disappointed. Does not come with a DVI cable...a trend that should be frowned upon. My 2 year old non-LED Samsung runs circles around this and wasn't much more expensive.
