Seagate BarraCuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

2 out of 5 eggs I also had a DOA drive -- COD issue 10/08/2009

This review is from: Seagate BarraCuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These drives appear to be outstanding when they don't arrive DOA or fail before burn-in.

Cons: My first drive arrived with the "Click of death" issue, and I'm currently in the RMA process. Based on outstanding reports from others, I've requested a replacement -- I'll give this model another chance before requesting a refund.

Other Thoughts: The shipping box was partially crushed, although the drive itself appeared undamaged. Aside from packing it well, which I have no complaints about (other than to note that styrofoam peanuts make quite a mess if you aren't carefu)l, I might recommend also marking the boxes as Fragile.

Arriving DOA is a surprisingly common problem with many 1TB+ capacity hard drives. This issue seems to apply across multiple manufacturers and vendors. I'm not sure if it's a general QA problem, or that such high-capacity drives are simply not robust enough to handle normal shipping. I'd like to be able to revise my review based on my experience with the replacement drive.
