ASRock ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming Fatal1ty Z87 Killer LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard

Pros: Has the features of higher-priced Z87 mobos:
- excellent UEFI
- 3 PCI3 lanes incl. x8/x8 for Crossfire/SLI (instead of x8/x4)
- 6 USB 3.0 ports + 7 USB 2.0 ports
- HDMI out (+ in, which I don't use but maybe you would?)
- 4 SATA cables included (more helpful than you think)
- 3 chassis fan connectors (great for those who use multiple case fans)
- integrated support for 4K
- low cost

NIC works fine for me. Sound is great. RAM slots work for me. First ASRock board...amazing quality for the price.

Cons: No wifi, but I didn't expect that at this price point.

Other Thoughts: All other brands' Z87 mobos at similar price points have similar features BUT use the older Realtek audio chipset (ALC892):
- Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
- Gigabyte GA-Z87X-HD3
- MSi Z87-G55
- ASUS Z87 A

The Fatal1ty Killer uses the newer audio chipset (ALC1150).

TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Fast, quiet, reliable (so far), and great value. Originally got the Western Digital Black WDFZ4003EX 4TB b/c it was rated as the absolute fastest 4TB HDD, but returned it since it was 2.5x the price of this one despite being only 1TB bigger. IOW, I could get 9TB (3x3TB Toshiba HDDs) for the price of one 4TB WD HDD.

Couple comments:

First, to make all 3TB recognized in Win7, I learned that during Win7 install, you have to:
1) hit SHIFT + F10 on the screen where it shows you the drives
2) enter: diskpart.exe
3) enter: list disk
4) enter: select disk 0 (or whatever disk number the 3TB drive is)
5) enter: clean (this is critical or else Win7 may only recognize 2 of the 3 GB)
6) enter: convert GPT
7) enter: create partition primary
8) enter: assign letter=c
9) enter: format quick fs=NTFS
10) enter: exit
11) enter: exit
Then resume Win7 installation.

You can also do this if you already have Win7 installed and are adding this HDD as a data drive but the OS is not recognizing all 3TB. Open a command prompt window and follow steps 2-11 in the instructions above (obviously using a different drive letter in step 8 since you'll already have a C drive).

Second, since Toshiba bought Hitachi in 2012, my Toshiba HDD label (bought my HDD on BF 2013) no longer says manufactured from a Hitachi plant, as some older reviews have said. This is important, as Hitachi makes the most reliable HDDs according to an article; google it). Recent Toshiba HDDs may still have been built using Hitachi technology or from a former Hitachi plant, but it's not obvious anymore.

My drive has been running fast and reliable so far (albeit only 2 months so far), so no complaints right now. Using to store my camcorder videos. To be safe, back up your data to two other sources (e.g., USB flash drive, Blu Ray/DVD, another HDD, etc.)

Cons: Nothing yet. Some people report failures around the 3 month mark. If happens to me, I'll post a new review.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-16GXM

Pros: First time buying G.Skill but flawless so far. Also, haven't actually tried it but based on measurements, it looks like this will also still fit under a 3rd-party CPU cooler like the top-rated Phanteks PH-TC14PE.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Using with ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer m/b.
