Newegg D5000 still a recall units

Nikon D5000 Black 12.3 MP Digital SLR Camera - 720p Movie - Body Only
Nikon D5000 Black 12.3 MP Digital SLR Camera - 720p Movie - Body Only

Pros: None really to note yet: I just unboxed the camera. I was looking for a smaller and lighter back-up camera body, and just handling it the D5000 feels like what I wanted. I have high hopes for this camera, given the positive reviews that I have read.

Cons: Following up on the previous two reviews, I will note that as of now it appears that the D5000s being sold by Newegg are still likely units that will need to be sent in to Nikon for inspection and repair due (do a web search for "Nikon service advisory D5000" to see more). To my mind this isn't a major negative, as the shipping for service is free, and I wasn't in a hurry to start using this camera because I bought it as a back-up body. However, other potential buyers should be aware of the service issue if they want to buy a camera for immediate use.

Overall Review: The camera was less expensive than I could find anywhere else, even with current instant rebates (see above for possible reason), which is good. I'm tentatively giving the camera four eggs for its feel in my hands, but I'll need to play with it seriously for a few days (after repair) before I really get to know how it works for me.

Most Critical Review

bought in March, dead in July

Crucial Gizmo! 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) JDOD4GB-730
Crucial Gizmo! 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) JDOD4GB-730

Pros: As others have mentioned the design for the cap is very effective: it would take some serious effort to loose the cover for the USB connector.

Cons: This is the third UBS drive that I have had die on me without any obvious abuse in the last 9 months (although the first Crucial...the other two were OCZ).

Overall Review: I still have a perfectly functional Crucial USB drive from where 256 MB was large...and it's the only USB drive that I have ever owned that last not broken in under 6 months. While I like the lower prices now, I can't help believing that quality on these things has gone down hill. Warranties are pretty meaningless when I've lost time recovering from data corruption.

Good...when they work...

Rosewill RX353-S BLK (Black) 3.5" SATA to USB & eSATA Ext. Enclosure w/Int.40mm fan
Rosewill RX353-S BLK (Black) 3.5" SATA to USB & eSATA Ext. Enclosure w/Int.40mm fan

Pros: When they work, these enclosures are nice: easy HDD installation (although a Phillips screwdriver is needed), and after using eSATA I never want to go back to UBS connections for external drives (eSATA is way faster).

Cons: I have bought 4 Rosewill HDD enclosures over the last year or more (this model, and the RX353...the internals look essentially identical). Only 2 are now functional (one DOA, assembled incorrectly, and RMAed; the second died in the first year).

Overall Review: The eSATA bracket that comes with the enclosure is a nice extra for older systems without eSATA points already present.

cool, quiet HDD (single-platter version)

Western Digital Blue WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Blue WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Queit and surprisingly cool-running. Even after cloning an entire disk to this new drive, it was only moderately warm to the touch (noticeably cooler than any other of a dozen or more bare 320 GB HDDs (WD, Seagate, Hatachi, Samsumg) that I have copied large volumes of data onto en mass.

Cons: None to date.

Overall Review: I got a single-platter version from an order on 05/30/2008 (model number ending with 00B3A0).

I'd buy it again.

CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450 W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450 W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Pros: This is a nicely thought-out power supply, with sheathed cables making the installation simpler, it's extremely quiet, and runs cool (a bonus from the energy-efficient design).

Cons: Not with the replacements unit (original review was of a DOA unit reviewed on 11/17/07).

Overall Review: I was impressed enough with this PSU, that I bought a second one to retrofit an 3-year old computer...the new power supply is saving about 10% on energy consumption.

DOA

CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450 W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450 W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Pros: None right now, at least not as anything more than a brightly-coloured paper weight.

Cons: DOA right out of the box. Absolutely no sign of life (should have tested it before putting in the case).

Overall Review: Waiting for an RMAed replacement right now, for a I form a proper opinion.
