2 out of 5 eggs Plagued by backplane failures 12/14/2013

This review is from: SUPERMICRO SYS-5017C-MTRF 1U Rackmount Server Barebone LGA 1155 Intel C202 DDR3 1333/1066/800

Pros: Hot swap, power efficient, 80+ GOLD PSU's.

Cons: Backplanes consistently fail after 6 - 24 months.

Other Thoughts: I have ~10 of these in production and 3 backplanes have failed while running under normal operations in the last 16 months. Only solution is to remove the backplane making the drives no longer hot swappable.

Enjoy the downtime.

Foxconn H61MXV LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Energy Efficient, Cheap, Legacy ports.

Cons: Does not work with Windows 2003.

Other Thoughts: I have a bunch of these running for a year so far and they've never given me any trouble.

Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5
  • neweggOwned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: High Capacity, One of the fastest 2.5" drives, especially for the price.

Cons: Heads are parking every 3 to 8 seconds in Linux 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5.

Other Thoughts: I installed 4 of these into a supermicro server for a RAID. They all park their heads every few seconds, causing small delays of 2 to 4 seconds whenever you do *anything* after more than a few seconds of idle time. Was able to fix the drives by disabling advanced power management (hdparm -B 255 /dev/sdX). Unchecked, this could potentially cause premature drive failure.
