Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit (Full Version)
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

3 out of 5 eggs Win8 Pro 64Bit 08/20/2013

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit (Full Version)

Pros: Another terrible MS product. The only good thing about this package is that the OEM version is cheaper than their retail package that is full of more nonsense.

Cons: Pretty much just windows 7 with a new user interface that is full of problems and requires a steep learning curve. Talk about a paradigm shift. For gaming this broken software is on par with Win7 in terms of performance. The frustration comes form the instability using programs and drives that would run just fine on Win7. For example, I had some issues getting the EVGA GTX670 graphics card drivers to install successfully. Also I cant get Skyrim to launch without errors or crashes. Downloads causes the whole system to crash on times. I am sure that MS will eventually fix this broken ship, so for now I just have to live with the grievances.

I built a new computer and needed an OS for the machine. Considering that Win7 and Win8 Pro 64Bit were the exact same price, I decided to go with the latest and greatest. Well this turned out to bite me in the rear. I have had numerous issues that are well documented on the internet. Looking back I regret getting Win8 and should have just stuck with the tried and true Win7. I have a hard time recommending this OS to anyone. If you are also torn between Win7 and Win8, and you dont want to wait for MS to fix Win8, then I recommend you just stick with Win7. This new operating system is the only component of my new computer build that is giving me issues. Other than that, the physical hardware on my new build has been rock solid for 3.5 months now. Here is to hoping that MS gets their act together soon and fixes Win8...cheers.

Other Thoughts: The product being reviewed is part of the following system. This system has been absolutely reliable for 3.5 months now and all parts have been 100% compatible with each other. There were no physical fitment issues either. I am very happy with the outcome of the following build:

ASRock Extreme4 Z77 Mobo
Intel Core i7-3770K CPU
Samsung 840 Series 250GB SSD
Western Digital Blue 1TB HDD
G.Skill Ripjaws X-Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (PC3 12800)
Corsair HX750 PSU
Cooler Master HAF 922 Computer Case
EVGA GTX670 FTW Graphics Card
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler
ASUS 24X DVD Burner
Win8 Pro 64bit OEM

Pros: Nice little affordable drive that works well with low noise. I really only use it to install software via CD (which is not very often now). I have had the product for about 3.5 months now and have not run into any issues. The price point and high review rate is what made me buy it and I am happy that I did. I would recommend you dont spend much time looking for an optical drive and just get this one.

Cons: None
