Pros: - Small
- HDMI Output
- Two USB Ports
Cons: - Overheats BADLY. Purchased an Octopus fan to cool it. That fan died and I had to buy another to replace it. I even purchased a laptop dock cooling pad as a backup. Even with the cooling pad, when streaming video via Edge browser, it still overheats.
- USB ports so close together hard to get two things plugged in if a USB connector is thick (from the laptop cooling pad.)
Other Thoughts: - I purchased this strictly to stream video via the internet (Edge only) as I'm a cable cutter. I stream content from PLEX, Netflix, HBO:GO, and Xfinity TV. All stream fine (some stuttering once in a while), but the PC is noticeably slower than anything else I've ever used, and if you plan to stream content via VLC or Acestream, say goodbye. I tried streaming a broadcast via Acestream and this thing struggled. Horrible video stuttering and lag while the audio was fine.
All other content is fine via the browser (slow to get going) but man does this thing overheat. I would recommend buying a cheaper Mini PC vs. this $99 Kangaroo PC that does not seem to get the job done, if this is what you're purchasing this for.
Pros: - 5GHz bands are FAST
- Getting 90/Mbps on Comcast on Wired or Wireless
- Easy Interface
Cons: - 2.4GHz band DOES NOT broadcast. It shows for a split second and disappears (see other notes)
- Bulky / Large
Other Thoughts: No idea why but the 2.4GHz won't broadcast and stay broadcasting at all. I was running the previous release of the firmware (Version 184.108.40.206.380.1355) and figured why not try the BETA firmware that's out right now (Beta Version 220.127.116.11.380.2697) and see if that fixes it. NOPE! Didn't work.
I have no idea why but the 2.4GHz band just won't broadcast. It shows up for a split second randomly and then disappears. I have the following settings currently and have tried the following settings:
- Smart Connect: 5GHz Smart Connect
- 2.4GHz SSID: Unique
- 5GHz SSID: Unique
The only device that is dependent on the 2.4GHz band is my NEST Thermostat. Otherwise, I can't get it to jump on 5GHz since it's not a Wireless AC device.
For a router this expensive, this needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY. Contemplating returning it due to this issue.
NOTE: My Thermostat is less than 30 feet from the ASUS AC5300. And there are barely any walls in between them so there shouldn't be an issue with "distance" or any of that garbage.
Pros: Fast & Cheap
Cons: This 480GB drive died on me in less than 1 week. Seriously? I disregarded the other negative reviews on this drive solely due to the fact that I've had an OCZ Vertex3 120GB running in my gaming desktop for almost 2 years now. Never had an issue with that drive.
Other Thoughts: I submitted an RMA with Newegg to have the drive replaced, but then found a Samsung 850 EVO for only a couple bucks more than what I had purchased this drive for. So I contacted Newegg to cancel the RMA and just issue me a refund. They updated the RMA to reflect this within minutes. Props to Newegg customer service, love it.
I would say, buy another drive other than this one. Just my experience. This got 2 eggs due to the fact that I would have received an RMA replacement, and Newegg's customer service is awesome. Otherwise, the drive gets 0 eggs.
