Excellent little box

ASUS Nettop Eee Box EB1007-B0410 Intel Atom D410 1GB DDR2 250GB HDD Intel GMA 3150 Linux
ASUS Nettop Eee Box EB1007-B0410 Intel Atom D410 1GB DDR2 250GB HDD Intel GMA 3150 Linux

Pros: Small, extremely low power, inexpensive but not cheap build quality (somewhat heavy for its size), decently fast, lots of ports (6 USB, audio, eSATA, SD card), tiny power brick

Cons: Slightly larger than I expected, preloaded OS is slow and useless, included keyboard/mouse are horribly cheap

Overall Review: I bought this desktop, along with a USB to Serial adapter, to replace a security server in the office server closet that runs WinXP Pro and a custom application. Power consumption was the biggest consideration (to extend UPS time), and this absolutely wins. This desktop draws 10.1 watts while idle, while the old server did over 140 watts. And it's under 1.5" tall when laid flat, so it can sit in a rack. The DC adapter is also the smallest I've ever seen. It runs WinXP Pro just fine, just don't expect to play FPS games on it. Asus includes a CD of drivers, which are also on their web site. The preloaded "ExpressGate" Linux distribution is horrible though. Slow, buggy and ugly. If you're not installing Windows and just want a good free, general-purpose OS, remove the preloaded OS and install Ubuntu, which also works fine on this desktop.

Beautiful!

Fractal Design Define C TG Black Tempered Glass Window Silent Compact ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Fractal Design Define C TG Black Tempered Glass Window Silent Compact ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: - Looks amazing - Build quality is what you'd expect from Fractal Design - Plenty of room behind the motherboard for cable routing, and logical holes everywhere for passing cables between the front and rear of the motherboard - Intake vents are unobtrusive but decently sized - Front panel is plastic faux brushed metal, but doesn't look "fake" - Front panel can be removed without interfering with the front IO panel - Small, almost looks like a microATX case in person - X2 fans are good quality and quiet; I've ordered 2x140mm X2s to replace the single front 120mm

Cons: - Basement is a bit constrained, unless you want to remove the drive cage (which is an option) - Glass panel takes some effort to get lined up with all 4 rubber grommets - I wouldn't recommend this case if you plan on opening it often

Overall Review: Until this build, I had never cared about case cable management. But this case makes it easy to present a clean, simple setup, which goes along with the stylings of the case itself.

Good overall cooler

ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro - Compact Multi-Compatible Tower CPU Cooler | 92 mm PWM Fan | for AMD AM4 and Intel 115x CPU | Recommended up to 115 W TDP
ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro - Compact Multi-Compatible Tower CPU Cooler | 92 mm PWM Fan | for AMD AM4 and Intel 115x CPU | Recommended up to 115 W TDP

Pros: - AM4 compatible out of the box - Quiet; rubber shock mounts on the fan are effective - Lots of surface area - Attractive (especially when paired with a Fractal Design black/white case) - Should not interfere with RAM on any full ATX motherboard

Cons: - AMD mounts are tab only, so it can only be mounted vertically - Fan can be a bit hard to snap into the heatsink - Will likely interfere with RAM on a micro-ATX motherboard, check your clearances (their web site gives full specs, "if center of CPU to RAM is less than X, RAM must be shorter than Y")

Overall Review: I don't remember buying this, but apparently I did in April 2016. Good thing I did, as I ordered a Hyper T4 along with a Ryzen build, then found it was too large to mount. I came across this in a box, and it works great!

Good incremental upgrade

Intel Core i5-4690K - Core i5 4th Gen Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1150 88W Intel HD Graphics 4600 Desktop Processor - BX80646I54690K
Intel Core i5-4690K - Core i5 4th Gen Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1150 88W Intel HD Graphics 4600 Desktop Processor - BX80646I54690K

Pros: Essentially a free upgrade bump vs. the i5-4670K. If you already own an i5-4670K, there is no reason to go to the i5-4690K, unless you are overclocking. Even then, it's only a modest bump.

Cons: Intel claims you must have a Z97 motherboard to use the Haswell refresh CPUs. In reality, most motherboard manufacturers have released BIOS updates to their Z87 boards to support the refresh, but it's annoying to see Intel making this claim.

Overall Review: This CPU is literally the same silicon as the i5-4670K, but with a better thermal package for overclocking. It's great at what it does and is an excellent refresh offering, but if you already own another Haswell CPU, you're better off waiting until Broadwell (whenever that may be).

Fractal Design Core 3000 FD-CA-CORE-3000-USB3-BL Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very nice design, solidly built, great value. Black interior with white highlights looks nice. Drive cages are well-spaced for ventilation. Thumb screws everywhere!

Cons: The white metal drive caddies tend to get a little warped. White plastic caddies caddies would have been more appropriate. It would be nice if it were a little wider, which would make it easier to work in, and would allow for a 200mm fan in the front/top (like the HAF series). LEDs are literally painfully bright.

Overall Review: Following the suggestion of other reviewers, I took a sharpie to the LEDs, which reduced the brightness a little.

Rosewill HIVE Series, HIVE-650S, 650W Fully Modular Power Supply, 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified, Single +12V Rail, SLI & CrossFire Ready, Black
Rosewill HIVE Series, HIVE-650S, 650W Fully Modular Power Supply, 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified, Single +12V Rail, SLI & CrossFire Ready, Black

Pros: Nice specs.

Cons: Product which arrived wasn't as it was described here. (Wasn't a con for me; see below.)

Overall Review: The product photos here show standard multicolored round-bundled cables wrapped in black mesh. The PSU which arrived had modular cables which were moulded flat and all-black. IMHO this works a lot better and looks very nice (especially combined with my Fractal Design case with a black interior), but keep in mind it wasn't the same as was described.
