OCZ Vista Upgrade 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2VU6674GK

Pros: Retail packaged, nice integrated heat sinks, memory came up and counted up fine.

Cons: None. It's memory. Assuming it came up (and it did), what could possibly go wrong?

Pros: Hit the sweet spot in terms of power and price (12/2007), nice retail package

Cons: Had to throw away 90% of the nice retail package :(

Other Thoughts: This is my first 64-bit desktop CPU, and it is very nice. Retail packaged, with a ginormous heat sink, etc., which I had to toss as I was placing this into a Shuttle (integrated cooling equipment) barebones system. :( Very nice processor, with no caveats. Would definitely recommend.

Shuttle SN68SG2 AMD Athlon 64 / Athlon 64 X2 / Sempron AMD Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7025 GeForce 7 Series Glamor small form factor XPC Barebone

Pros: minimal set-up time, nice form factor, easy to work with

Cons: concern over power/heat budget, only 6 USB connectors, lack of support for Vista64, alternative OS (linux)

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a replacement for my high end gaming machine (moving gaming to the console), for daily mid-range use. Setup was simple, added an Athlon 64 X2 6400+ CPU and a GeForce 8400, and despite some fumbling on my part with the integrated cooling, I was up and running in minutes. Works wonderfully, except when CPU spikes, the Shuttle fans whine loudly and unpleasantly. No Shuttle XPC Tools support for Vista64 at present to mitigate. Limited NIC and video support for Linux. I also have the problem where a cold boot requires power on (no boot), power off, and a second power on - I believe that Shuttle has a BIOS fix for this, but I haven't applied it yet (must be done from DOS boot floppy). Despite complaints, would recommend.
