Not what I was expecting
Pros: It did exactly what it was supposed to do. The card installed easily and the drivers were recognized by MS Server 2003 without issue.
Cons: JBOD only.
Overall Review: This isn't really a con because it is my fault for not reading up on the card more thoroughly but I was expecting it to have support for on board RAID. I guess since it's a HBA (Host Bus Adapter) this it is normal not to have it, but since this was my first experience with such a device it was news to me. All the other LSI SAS HBA cards come with a firmware for integrated RAID EXCEPT the 9200-8e. The first tech support agent I got told me it was possible, but the 2nd one told me that it wasn't. I didn't deduct any stars since this is mostly my fault for not researching the card better and understanding the technology.
Card DOA
Pros: Was excited about this card after purchasing and returning a similar card that didn't do hardware RAID.
Cons: It arrived DOA. Of course it took about 2 hours of messing with it to figure that out. Consistent PCIe Training Errors. Reseated multiple times in multiple slots, upgraded the BIOS and still dead. Very frustrating.
Overall Review: We'll see if a replacement card fairs better.
Awesome Firewall
Pros: This device is awesome. It's tiny, fanless and low power with 2 x NICs. It comes with 1GB of RAM and has removable space for an HDD or CF card. It is THE perfect open source firewall appliance. I used an old HDD and installed pfSense on these little guy and it is working great. Much better than some of the other dedicated Monowall/pfSense network appliances I bought - and cheaper too! No fans means that it's quiet with less points of failure. I'm going to start using these for all our router/firewall installations.
Cons: None
Overall Review: Well it's not a con, it would be nice if I could get a miniPCIe NIC card for this thing to increase the interface capabilities. I couldn't find one and I'm not sure if it would be usable if I did. Just a thought - this thing with 3-4 NICs (for DMZ or something similar) would be unbeatable.
Pros: It does everything it was sold as. Even runs Crysis smoothly at 1600x1200 but not at full detail, which is a bit of a bummer but if I wanted cutting edge I should have bought the 58xx series.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: Super happy with this. It was an Xmas gift to myself since I hadn't updated my graphics card in over 2 years. Well worth the price.
