Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Dead silent! I have this installed in an Antec 900 case, I run all my fans on low speed and the system is just a quiet hum, you cant hear this hard-drive AT ALL, I pulled the side of the case and put my hand on it, I couldnt feel any vibration from it and it was COLD to the touch (after a full format and an hour of cloning). Nice drive. Very fast spin up. From the moment I turn the computer on untill I am loading programs in windows is consistently 25-27 secs.

Cons: Cost is still high, but not as crazy as SSD's. With WinXP-SP3 and NTFS it only formats to 280.xxx GB. Sad to lose those extra 20gb's, so it puts the price point up to about $1.07/gb. Might be more/less depending on OS.

Other Thoughts: This one drive replaced 2x WD Black Caviar 150GB's running in RAID0. Dropped my load times for windows by about 5secs and game load times anywhere from 10-30 secs depending on games. I think at least some of the increase in speed is from the fact that I was using the poor nForce onboard RAID.

Great drive if you dont mind spending the extra $/GB. I now have the 2x Black Cavs setup RAID1 for backups and use the VelociRaptor for my main drive for OS/Games. WinXP-SP3.
