4 out of 5 eggs Great Features and Looks: Bad Flash 09/05/2014

This review is from: MSI Z97I Gaming AC LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This board has lots of great features and all with a super small build. I also love the color setup. I used in a Corsair 250 build. Just awesome and no issues for the first two months.

Cons: MSI Live Update messed up my machine. It installed the latest BIOS via Windows, which I thought was strange. After the reboot, the machine was super slow and network cards failed. After trying numerous times to correct the network issues via uninstall and changing driver, I decided to I flash back to the prior BIOS using M-Flash. Although it showed the BIOS flashed correctly, it will no longer display anything. In addition, the power LED does not light up. Power supply is fine as I tested it on another machine. I reseated the memory, video card etc. I think the mobo is completely dead now or bricked to be more precise. I opened a support ticket with MSI so let’s see how that goes. I did some research and found that MSI does not recommend flashing in Windows. I find this strange since they are the ones that provided the option via MSI Live Update. I also found many mention of a similar experience with flashing going bad. I am very disappointed in MSI right now.

Other Thoughts: In the end, MSI has always done right by me. I am just so disappointed that although I had this mobo for two months, I need to RMA likely. This type of thing can happen with any manufacturer so I wont be too hard. The product itself has loads of features that make it a great buy.

Pros: Great price, performance and very quit.

Cons: I purchased an MSI 560 Ti SC 2Gig card from Newegg less than a month ago. Last week I noticed the card was heating up during game play. I opened the case and saw one of the fans was not spinning. I then realize the fan was hitting the card shroud. I nudge the fan a little and it starts to spin and then get stuck again. One of the fins keeps hitting the shroud.I nudge the card again and the same thing happens. The fan felt very soft too like the heat from the card may have soften the plastic. After a final nudge the fin that was hitting the shroud and causing it to get stuck comes flying out.

I complete an RMA online for a refund. I clearly indicate what the issue was and it gets "approved". I send in the card and now they say they decline the RMA due to damage. The card is less than 30 days and it got damaged because of a design flaw. Why did you approve my RMA when I clearly stated what happened from the get go.

Other Thoughts: Not happy with Newegg for wasting my time. Now lets see if MSI will replace it.

ASUS RT-N56U Wireless Router Dual Band N600 Multimedia Ultra Slim Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n support USB Storage, Print and Media Server

Pros: I purchased this router after reading the great reviews. I have 16 devices connected and my prior router would drop the wireless clients. Main reason for getting this router was the two USB ports. I wanted to connect an external drive and printer

Cons: Printers supported are very limited. When it relates to the external drive access it is hit and miss. Whenever I try to use the FTP option, this caused the router to be inaccessible. I have to restart. Accessing the shared drive is also very slow.

Other Thoughts: Hope they get these issues resolved with a firmware upgrade. Luckily I dont have a need to print much or access the FTP features any more but if I did, I would be angry. Overall router is very cool looking and it stays cool as well. No more wireless drops. Excellant for gaming.
