Western Digital RE2 WD4000YR 400GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Relatively Low Price for this type of drive if it worked reliably as advertised.

Cons: Very poor to nonexistent reliability. Over the past 12+ years or so as a computer tech I have never encountered such consistent and total hard drive failures at one time for a single batch of drives from Western Digital or anyone else.

The claimed MTBF of 1.2 Million hours and a 100% uptime duty cycle seems pretty outrageous.

Other Thoughts: 4 Drives purchased from 11 JUL 06 and received 14 JUL 06. Drives intended for blade server RAID 1 installations. Drives were packed well and there was no sign of mishandling that might typically lead to drive damage. Yet... after testing in 3 different Supermicro servers;
1 Drive w/ severe media errors --> RMA Returned as DOA
2 Drives not recognized at all --> RMA Returned as DOA
1 Drive functional after verification completed but, then failed before OS install completed. --> RMA Returned as DOA

After calling NewEgg I was permitted to return the drives. Was considering replacing w/ same model drives but, after failure of the 4th drive decided to go with something else for this customer.
NewEgg wouldn't say but they must be getting a ton of these drives returned.
