LEPA 70D 12 (LP70D12R) 120mm Case Fan

5 out of 5 eggs Very fan-like 02/11/2014

This review is from: LEPA 70D 12 (LP70D12R) 120mm Case Fan

Pros: Airflow seems really good. I can feel the air movement from a few feet away.

As mentioned in the description it has an adapter that lets you connect it to 5v, 7v, or 12v for an adjustable fan speed. It's got three labeled connections to connect the fan to, and the other connection is a molex.

Modestly quiet.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I haven't owned it long enough to comment on it's lifespan so I didn't put that as a pro, but it "feels" very well built. I can see many years of constant use out of this fan.

Pros: Great card! Runs cool, has no problem sticking at 72 C even under a constant heavy load, pretty quiet even at high fan speeds.
I'm getting about 750 kh/s from scrypt mining with it. Not overclocked, though it would probably overclock like a champ, were you so inclined.

Cons: HUGE. This thing is about 11.5 inches long. Though the connections for the power rails are on the top not the side, so you don't have to account for them too. Just Make sure your case and motherboard can accommodate it. In my case, the CPU heatsink was in the way. Fixed with a riser cable.

Other Thoughts: For Linux users. I didn't want to put this as a con as I imagine not many Linux users would use a card this beefy given the poor gaming selection. As of the time of this writing, the current stable driver 13.12 does not compile nicely with my kernel, or probably any post 3.9 kernel given the name of the patch I found. Google amd-catalyst kernel-3.9.1.patch, you should find the needed patch that way. Worked for me.

TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

5 out of 5 eggs Makes my network.. networky 02/11/2014

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: It does what you expect of a network switch. It works. I have no problems getting 1000mpbs links on capable systems and 100mpbs and 10mpbs (yes I actually have a 10mpbs device) that work.
MDI/MDIX also work fine.

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: I can't tell you about sustained throughput under heavy loads or anything like that. My home network for the most part was fine with it's previous 100mpbs hub but I do occasionally copy large (several GB of files) across the network and I have some linux NFS boot systems so I thought it was about time to upgrade.
