BUFFALO TeraStation ES 4-Bay 4 TB (4 x 1 TB) RAID Network Attached Storage (NAS) - TS-XE4.0TL/R5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Easy Setup
Reasonable Cost
Front Display

Cons: Somewhat long boot

Other Thoughts: Overall, for $540, this is not a bad drive at all. Came pre-configured in Raid 5 with 4 WD Green HDs. I happen to be a fan of WD so I was pleased. It took a few minutes to boot making me think there is something wrong, but eventually, the display does go to normal operation and the device is easily seen on the network. This one did not auto-prompt me to update the firmware like others have mentioned. It joined our domain flawlessly and saw all the AD users and groups after a reboot. Created a backup share, setup the backup software to use the device and it has been humming along ever since. Only using a single Network Port even though two are available. So far, nothing to complain about. As long as the durability is there, I can us using this drive for many years to come. I have always had good luck with WD drives. I give 4 eggs as I feel there is always room for improvement. Perhaps decreasing boot time or even maybe making it a bit smaller or increasing x-fer rates. But know that 4 eggs, for me, is a very high mark. Do not hold that missing egg as anything negative about this drive.

1 out of 5 eggs Seagate - 2 Thumbs Down 08/22/2012

This review is from: Seagate 1TB Backup Plus Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 Model STBU1000101 Silver

Pros: None I can think of

Cons: Do not buy seagate drives. They have a high failure rate and only 1 year warranty. That should tell you something. I have owned exactly 2 seagate drives in my life and they both failed within 1 year. The replacement drives failed shortly after the 90 day warranty they give you on the replacement drive they send you. If you buy this drive to backup your data, buy a secondary drive from another Mfg to backup your seagate drive. Extremely poor quality.

Other Thoughts: I would not own another seagate drive if they were given them away for free.

Western Digital Blue WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Quiet, Fast

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have always had really good luck with WD drives and this one is no exception. Plugged right in, powered right up, easy formatting and I expect many years of good service from this drive. I have rarely had any WD drives fail on me and never had one DOA, though I am sure it happens. Everytime I replace a dead drive, it is usually a Seagate I am replacing with one of these. I normally buy larger drives as well. Just bought this size because it is for a business that does not need massive storage and this is one of the smaller drives avaialble that is at a reasonable price.
