Can't get over the keyboard. 8/23/2018 3:28:08 PM

Pros: Mostly everything, Love the speed, looks, and tablet

Cons: The lighted keyboard. See other below

Overall Review: I have read the reviews It seems like everyone has complaints about the lighted keyboard. You are right, it is hard to read when the keys are lit. So hard that I guess you can't see that f7 turns the light off. Problem solved. I had the problem too, but it took less than 3 minutes to google it and find the answer.

Yes I wish there was a pocket for the stylus, but would I take a star off for that? I wouldn't, but I don't doodle on my laptop that often.

I think that there would be less complaints if customers would read the specs before they make the purchase.

Very glitchy 8/17/2017 7:33:25 PM

Pros: -Best 2 in 1 on the market
-Love the trackpad and keyboard, but it was very clicky and needed to be worn in but didn't take long.
-Extremely fast
-Supports all engineering programs which is reliable
-Touch screen is very precise

Cons: -Stylus turns on and off randomly
-Screen is too heavy
-Speakers aren't loud
-Keyboard is hard to see
-Cant play games
-Can't put laptop in tent mode
-There are no accessories for this case!!!
-VERY glitchy. The screen might freeze for a second then continue with whatever I was doing. Not very consistent.
BIGGEST thing on this list is how awful the customer support is. You have to request a time aso YOU go around THEIR schedule, because apparently their time is more valuable then mine. The only time I got a message back was when I originally bought this laptop and the computer literally didn't work. I had to get a refund approved by Porsche Design. I was promised a case for my laptop and they never sent it to me. They have no consideration for the customer and bad customer service means a bad business.

Powerful, easy to use. Beautiful 7/23/2017 5:47:06 AM

Pros: Fast! this is the first computer i've ever owned that can keep up with me.
Multitasks with ease and multiple user control methods are flawless.
I use laptop for Engineering purposes. i run long complicated simulations in CAD, mathcad, Matlab. autorouting PCBs. simulations that would take 10's of minutes to an hour on other laptops a couple years old are 10x faster on this laptop. i appreciate that.
I didn't think i would use the detachable screen much as i'm not a tablet guy, but, i find its nice to use in the morning with a coffee. facebooking or reading the news. screen, and track pad for that matter, can tell the difference between accidental contact and normal use.
Windows Hello is actually useful. it takes a few times to improve recognition under different lighting conditions but now its pretty reliable. i shaved my beard today, still recognized me :)

Cons: i find the problems i have are with windows 10, no so much laptop. windows went through update and suddenly laptop does not recover from sleep mode while on battery power. windows goes through another update and suddenly problem goes away.
I agree with other reviews that keys are hard to read. grey keys with backlight keypad. before you press keys all the letters are easily readable, but as soon as you press they become backlit and you get grey keys with white lights.. honestly, hard to see. is that function F4? text is small and hard to read. what symbol is for turning down brightness, can't see ... either wait for backlight to turn off or bring head close to keys to see.
Case seems robust. and i dropped my laptop once and it survived except it got scratched in the dropping process and now my silver case has a scratch on it. it fell from my knee while sitting on a couche to a carpeted rug, really no reason to even get a scratch yet somehow it did. seems easy to scratch?

Overall Review: i've held off reviewing product until i have had a few months of using it. i don't travel with laptop so i can't really speak to how easy that is but the thing is slim and light weight, i don't know why previous reviewer complained it was heavy. look at the specs, i think its less than a pound.

Here's something i didn't realize. if you want the Porsche premium warranty you have to sign up on their web page within the first 30days or something like that. if you don't sign up, then you get their regular support. their regular support works too, i don't know why other people complain. i had an issue with a driver. i went to porsche website and logged a technical issue. couple days later they got back to me. i'm premium service (which is free with purchase so long as you register device) would have been faster but i used regular. anyway, i'm glad they were there for me.

with previous laptops i had to permanently disable track pad because my hand would brush by it while typing and mouse would go crazy. not the case with this laptop, it can tell the difference.

battery power seems legit as advertised. i haven't gone out of my way to test it, but my normal use and it goes all day and i put it on charger at night.

sound is great, even better when processed through loud external speakers. there's also some sort of enhanced audio feature that makes it really exceptional with headphones. there's a setting in there somewhere you can try it out, really, wow.

is it worth the money? i think so. its a powerful computer, light weight with long lasting battery. all the features work flawlessly. and it looks great!

Don't waste your money 7/10/2017 12:58:02 AM

Pros: The Book One is a solid machine, literally and figuratively. The aluminum casing seems very strong and looks sleek. I like the detaching tablet, but not sure I'll ever end up using it separately without carrying the whole thing with me, particularly because the battery power on just the screen is kind of low. The machine has USB-C 3.1, which allows it to connect to a multitude of devices from a single connection as well as two additional USB 3.0 ports and a microSD (which doesn't seem terribly useful unless you use a microSD card in your camera). Amazing touchpad too! The keyboard is nicely laid out and the keys have a nice separation, making it easier to type. I haven't used the pen much yet...

Cons: - Support? What support? If you want support for your laptop, PD forces you to go through their "Contact Form" each time, which you have to fill out with your entire contact information (I'm surprised they don't ask you for your birth date as well), and upload a receipt of your purchase. What is this, 1991? My initial fears about purchasing a laptop from a company that makes pens are confirmed: they cannot manage software/hardware support or deliver updates to customers.
- The USB ports are milled too precisely to the correct size which makes plugging things in and out really hard
- There are 2 USB-C ports and it took me a while to figure out which to connect to the external display
- The pen connects magnetically to the side, which makes it easy to bump it and drop it somewhere and lose it. Would've been nice if it could've been locked somehow.
- It is HEAVY! It's heavier than my Dell 14" laptop
- The keyboard's backlighting is uneven. It seems like underlying button mechanism obscures part of the light that's supposed to light up each key. Looks ugly and sloppy.
- Also on the keyboard: there's a reason why MacBooks have a black keyboard with white labels. They're easy to read. The PD keyboard is grayish with transparent (?) labeling that's supposed to let light through so that the labels are readable. Well, when there's actual light in the room that's not too bright, the keys become really hard to read because of the weak backlighting and the lack of contrast between the labels and the key color.
- The casing's color is slightly pink.
- Coil whine, both when the laptop is charging (louder) and discharging. I only started noticing this issue lately but it's very annoying. During discharge it only seems to happen when the keyboard backlight turns off.
- No graphics card means no real games.
- The only way to switch to tablet mode automatically and disable the keyboard is to flip the screen 360 degrees completely. Any other intermediate mode will put the laptop back in laptop mode, which makes it hard to use as a tent /\ or in presentation mode _\
- It's too big and heavy to be used effectively as a tablet with the base. Without the base, it is just too big.
- The touchpad is very hard to click, and is slightly loose so that if you just tap it, it feels like a cheapo mouse button that has some give. It's soooo much worse than the Dell XPS 13 that I have.

Overall Review: All in all I think the Porsche Design is a powerful laptop that could've been much nicer if they paid attention to more details. I don't think it is worth the price I paid for it given the annoyances. I would not buy this laptop again. Perhaps their next generation laptop would be better... My other laptop is a Dell XPS 13. That one is miles ahead.
(PS: I've been updating my review over time)

Third time a charm 6/20/2017 12:42:04 PM

Pros: This is a great laptop.

- Keyboard has nice feel.
- Disconnecting tablet has a positive UNLOCK signal
- FAST computer, very fast
- Track pad is great
- Flipping it over to have the keyboard upside down works great.
- As a tablet disconnected from the keyboard it is light
- USB-C charger works on screen and base.
- Laptop uses battery in base before the screen.
- I do not need to buy all USB-c with the classic ports
- Dedicated key for settings (I love having this so quick)

My main use is writing notes in Office 2016 OneNote. This works well, very well. I loaded
- Office 2016
- Cisco AnyConnect
- DropBox
- Other items like '1Password' and other items.

Still very quick. I also appreciate the direct contact Porsche-Design had with me over the issues with the first two.

<edit 1 June 20, 2017>
Connected a StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter (TBT3TBTADAP) to USB-C / thunderbolt port on laptop.
- Connected LG 34UM95C-P Thunderbolt display to the Startech
-- LG Display has following devices off of it;
---- Apple Thuderbolt Ethernet Adapter
---- DasKeyboard
---- Logitect Mouse Performace MX
---- Creative 720 Live! WebCam

All worked Perfectly. Dual Screen (Extended) mouse keyboard all worked the same as my Mac Book Pro 2015 (non USB-C), camera and Ethernet.

Connected a StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter (TBT3TBTADAP) to USB-C / thunderbolt port on laptop directly to APPLE Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter, and it worked as well.

Next tried a CalDigit TS2 Thunderbolt Dock
-- Connected via the StarTech
---- HDMI to a Cisco DX80 for Display
---- Ethernet
---- USB 3.0 Segate Hard Drive

All worked great.

Cons: I had two DoA before I got one that worked.

- Keyboard back light is distracting in well light areas. Well reported. Turn off back light unless you need it.
- Issue that there is ghost glitch that seems to lock the pointer to the top right and click, resulting in application closing.
- Limited accessories at 06/17/17 - want a back up stylus

Overall Review: Porsche-design wants this product to succeed. They reviewed my review and reacted by reaching out and explaining issues, and apologizing.

Best 2 in 1 that money can buy 5/23/2017 7:50:59 AM

Pros: I'm a bit surprised at the reviews here, because I love this thing. Also, after owning it for more than month, my biggest concerns about buying from an OEM that's just entering the market are alleviated.

- It has the specs and ports of an ultra-high-end premium laptop. 16/512 are the right numbers.
- Best detachable mechanism on the planet. I find that I actually use the "slate mode" sometimes, e.g., when I'm taking it to bed and know that I might be flipping it around to compose some emails. ("Slate mode" is the folded-back screen, and "tablet mode" is detached screen.)
- Reasonably priced. This thing directly compares to the Surface Book i7/512GB/16GB/no dGPU. They have the same retail price.
- Great screen.
- Great speakers.
- Notably great keyboard. Long travel, crisp breaks. Well-labeled. Largish arrow keys. My keyboard has no issues with backlighting as I've seen on another review here.
- Battery life. I haven't done a stress test, but I've taken off the cord and worked a full 8 hour day and gotten down to 35% main battery (full tablet).
- Extremely beautiful. I have a house that is only full of premium laptops and this one looks the best. The aluminum has a subtle coloration that makes it slightly more gold than other aluminum.
- I love how the pen attaches to the screen. It's a very strong connection and I haven't had problems with it falling off. It has another attach point in the long hinged side when in tablet mode.
- Responsive support team. When you register the laptop you get "one year of premium support". You email them through a form on their website, and they've personally responded to each of the three emails I've sent within a few days, and each response was not a generic response, but an actual solution or explanation of my issue, implying that the guy on the other end actually read and understood my complaint. That's an unparalleled level of service for a first point of contact.

Cons: I wish I could say the laptop is perfect, but it's not.

- Coil whine. I have been promised a firmware update to take care of it. But this is definitely an annoying problem. This is, by far, the most annoying problem with the laptop, standing out above any others.
- 16:9 aspect ratio. I believe that 3:2 is more comfortable for a tablet device. And I value vertical space more than horizontal space for browsing and editing.
- Bug: Rotation is locked to landscape when in laptop mode. So it can't rotate to tent mode. This is a driver issue that affects many brands of laptop, and a firmware update has been promised. They also provided a reasonable workaround. (Switch to slate, lock it to inverted landscape, and then open to tent.)
- Bug: Sometimes, when I use the pen to dismiss Windows Ink, Windows Ink crashes and can't be opened for 5-10 seconds. Once I figured out what was going on, this issue became easy to work around.
- Tight USB-A ports. A tiny bit more slack would be nice.
- No support forum. Support forums are extremely useful places to share knowledge about the device, and I'm actually really missing having one.

Overall Review: I have a lot of options for laptops. Sitting with ten feet of me, I have an XPS 13 touch, a recent model of 15" MBP (non-touchbar), and a Zbook g3. The Porsche is pretty much the only computer I use anymore. I'm giving this 5 stars not because it's perfect, but because it is the best detachable 2 in 1 that money can buy.

- I would recommend this to anyone in search of a premium detachable-screen laptop.
- I would happily buy this again.
- This is the Surface successor that we've all been waiting for, as well as the best detachable 2 in 1 that money can buy for any price.

Porsche Design 5/21/2017 9:43:58 PM

Pros: Quiet, Fast, runs Cool and Light weight. Online help/support quick. Returned other brand bought at same time because of heat:noise.

Cons: No actual Owners manual ( in any language as of now ) but did get fast reply.

Overall Review: Problem with security-I'd camera about everyother boot but does not allow pin logon or mouse nor ctrlaltdlt to work. Requires semi-reset (hold off btn10 secs, wait 20 and reboot). Usually works a couple times in a row after that.

Terrible Coil Whine 5/15/2017 8:37:03 AM

Pros: Very powerful Machine, with a lot of great features. Definitely my ideal computer except for the one major flaw.

Cons: There is a terrible coil whine that emits an incredibly high pitched chirp. I can barely use the machine for more than 20 minutes without getting a headache and having to stop. I did not expect this after paying such a high price for a laptop.

Overall Review: Update**, I have just heard from the customer support that the issue has been resolved and that Porche Computing will be releasing an update to fix the issue. I have thus upgraded by rating from 1 star to 3. I have not gone further than 3 stars because the original ticket that I submitted has gone unanswered and I have since returned the machine
