can I get it with 4gb memory?

Depends on what you want to use it for.

I was on the fence too, and I've been using it as a home server, streaming from Plex and using it for backup/music simultaneously and I've had no issues.

Arguably if you're using more of the feature set than I am (the web server/mail server and perhaps the surveillance options) then more memory will definitely help you.

But at 4GB, with music streaming, video streaming and backup I've never had issues.

Question 2

The specs indicate that an upgrade of memory to 8gig is available.  However, I see some people saying they have 16gig.  is this accurate?  I want to order memory but didn't want to over order.  If i can put 2 8gig in it then i will be even happier.  Please advise.

Yes I have successfully installed it was fully functional 16gb 2x8gb Low Voltage SODIMMs without any issues, but after doing so I thought it was a waste in which I went down to 8gb 2x4gb Low Voltage SODIMMs.

You can only run on Virtual Machine at a time.

Yes.  You will  need at least 3 drives of the same capacity for a RAID-5 configuration.

Question 5

Two questions. How quiet is the fan if and when it gets hot or warm? Can the 120mm fan be replaced with a quieter version?

I have both a TS-451 and a TS-851.  The machines themselves are near silent, even if doing something processor intensive such as transcoding.  The only thing you really hear at all is the disks, and in most cases, even those are silent.  You don't hear the normal disk whir (rotation noise), the only real noise you hear is if you do something that has a lot of random access in which the heads move a lot on the disks.

And yes, you probably can upgrade the fan, but there really isn't any need, as the box itself is pretty much silent.

Is this the 4GB RAM model with capacity for 4x4TB = 16TB of storage?

Yes you can set it up with 4x4tb = 16TB of storage, but the available storage depends how its setup with RAID as 0, 1, 5, 6 or 10.

Raid 1 = 16TB
Raid 0 = 4TB
Raid 5 = 12TB
Raid 6 = 12TB
Raid10 = 8TB

Also to let you know, the this unit support 6TB Drives, as I running four of them as RAID10 for a total capacity of 12TBs.

Question 7

I'm thinking about purchasing two 4TB drives now to later purchase two more drives as I need them (would likely be 1-2 years from now). Is it bad if the machine has different drives? Should they all be the same?

It is always Recommend to use the same drives in a RAID setup, the features supported by drives will work better.

You could always  get the same drives cheaper later.

Can the TS451 transcode 4K video?

Yes, but not in real time.  So you couldn't take a 4k video and transcode it to a smaller format and stream it real time out of plex.  But you could use the option in the setup that lets you create different resolutions of each video you have on the device.

Question 9

According to the QNAP website the ram it uses is DDR3L ram can I use standared DDR3 SODIMM ram or do I have to buy the fancy one from QNAP?

You must use DDR3L which is 1.35V.

You DO NOT have to buy the RAM from QNAP.   I've used to different manufactures of RAM for an 8GB and 16GB upgrade and they both worked and they were DDR3L.

Question 10

Will this directly connect to a Mac Pro?  I currently work right from a Drobo and want to replace it.  Anyone use it as direct attached storage?  I'm not really interested in the DLNA capabilities more of the RAID features and hi read/write speeds.  I'm a photographer and work with RAW images that are typically around 35 Mb each.

I know on a PC you can set the target for iSCSI so the drive will appear as it was a local drive to the PC. You can also just attach a share from the NAS so it shows up as a share drive on the Mac. This unit is really design to be used over a network and not a USB to PC/MAC.
