Amazing product, but set your expectations right!\3/5/2017 9:20:39 AM
Pros: For the price, it is absolutely impossible to beat this NAS!
Eight drive slots, which are all full-speed SATA ports, unlike the Synology 1815+. That means you won't be sacrificing any performance.
10 GbE, which you won't find on a Synology until a MUCH more expensive model.
Synology has always been top pick when it came to software. But let's face it, the new versions of QTS (the operating system) are functionally indistinguishable (and in some ways better than) the Synology counterparts.
Finally, with Enterprise drives that run VERY hot, even on the medium fan settings, this device keeps the drives cool and is almost silent.
Cons: The CPU is weak. Many people like to use these devices as a sort of "all-in-one" to handle all their media transcoding and such. This is not the device for that. It's going to stumble with CPU intensive tasks.
It is best used for pure file storage, with maybe a little bit of light duty for Docker or Linux containers. Store you data here and connect a different computer to do the CPU-heavy stuff, like Plex.
The new Synology devices are also offering BTRFS support, which is superior to the standard RAID options that this device supports. Hopefully QNAP will offer this option soon.
Overall Review: This device is absolutely more than capable of saturating 10GbE when coupled with SSDs. Even with an array of "spinning rust" (regular drives), it can easily reach 5 Gbps speeds or more, which is more than enough for all file storage and retrieval tasks.
If you are just looking for a performant storage solution, look no further. I whole-heartedly recommend this device, especially for the price.
Pros: awesome raid 6 implementation, very easy to do the initial setup, good amount of apps
Cons: UNDER POWERED, you have to enable Multitasking, but that disables the remote. Plex app needs a lot of work, the qnap branded apps don't always default to a logical volume or aren't easily able to be changed to an alternative.
Overall Review: this is the "windows" of nas drives decent software, but needs work...hold off on this one and save up for the TVS-871T
