what do you mean by diskless...is it solid state?

The NAS comes without hard drives. Diskless means you have to buy and install the drives before the unit can work. Unit will accept 2.5" or 3.5" internal drives. Unit works best with NAS optimized 3.5" drives - don't use Green drives.

Question 2

Does the QNAP notify you if a disk fails, or do I have to actively monitor it, either through the web interface or by looking at the lights on the front.  I'm worried that if it "just works," then it'll get ignored and when a drive inevitably fails, I won't know about it.  Can I set up cron jobs that run on the device and send me mail?

It has e-mail server settings... I am assuming that if a drive fails I will get e-mailed the alert, but haven't had that happen yet.  Also, yes, there are indicator lights on the unit...

Question 3

2 Questions:
This supports "Online RAID Capacity Expansion" but does that mean I can start out with 3 drives in RAID5 and add two more later or does it just mean I can upgrade the drive size (like 2 to 4TB)?

On the website the maximum RAW data size is 20TB.  Does that mean I can't fill it with the latest 6 & 8 TB drives in RAID5 or were the specs just written before those drives were available?

Yes, 3 drives is the minimum for RAID5 and you can add drives at a later time. Volumes can also be resized at a later time if you upgrade your drives to larger volumes. RAID always sizes to the smallest drive in the array. So, the best practice is to use drives of the same capacity.

It appears that the 569 now supports 6TB drives, so I think you'll be fine for expansion above 20TB. The only supported 6TB drive is the Seagate ST6000VN0001 (Enterprise NAS HDD). If I were you, I'd contact QNAP Presales for confirmation. What appears logical to me not actually be fact, and I cannot find anything to support my assertion. The only indication to me of the max volume size is that there is a note in the user manual stating that non-Intel Atom devices support a maximum of 16TB volumes. The 569 is an Intel Atom device. EXT4 volumes can be exabyte in size. I don't know what the limiting factor would be.

Question 4

I am looking for a local, in house solution for about 75-100 users and i dont want to spend thousands of dollars. I just need something that they can backup their files to and access should they need it. Also is there software that can automatically do this for them? What would I need?

Hi Jonathan,

Qnap will handle things, but it might be a little under powered, i would suggest a smalls server with openfiler and a linux client with a common nas share.
QNAP could handle maybe a dozen users, but for that type of Horsepower, i would handle the network with multiple 1 gb nic ports and a server. (openfiler is free, but not sure on your linux eperience).

What is the difference between the QNAP "TS-569L-US" and the QNAP "TS-569-PRO-US"?

To answer my own question, I found the document:

Page 6 of that document has a comparison chart.  The PRO version has 6 Gb/s SATA whereas the L version uses 3 Gb/s SATA.  Also the Pro version has lockable hard drive trays and the ability to do a quick config from the LCD panel, two options that the L version does not appear to have per the chart.  In fact, based on pictures I am seeing online, the L version does not appear to have an LCD panel at all.

Question 6

I would assume this is compatible with windows 8 clients, but assumptions being what they are I'd like to know if anyone has had any issues with file sharing from one of these to Win8.  I used a couple of Qnap's a few years ago to provide ISCSI shares to Windows '03 and '08 servers, but this will be fore direct SMB file sharing.  Does anyone know of issues with Windows 8 clients?
