1 great, 1 DOA 7/28/2020 9:12:09 AM

Overall Review: I planned to purchase 6TB drives, but the issue with SMR vs. CMR and Newegg had a great promo deal. Populated my new QNAP NAS with two WD Red 8TB. One disk was immediately recognized, and the other appeared to be DOA. One drive gets a 5 and the other gets a 0, so I am averaging out to 2.5 eggs.

I opened an RMA and shipped back the next day. It has been 6 days, and still no replacement has been shipped from Newegg. Why the delay? Maybe I should have gone with the Seagate Ironwolf drives as originally planned

Manufacturer Response:
I do apologize to hear that one of your new drives was faulty on arrival as that is not the standard that we hold our drives to. We are glad that the second drive is working well, and hope that the replacement drive NewEgg sends you works just as well.

LOUD 7/20/2020 2:26:10 PM

Pros: Good read & write speeds. (160-170 from one to another)

Cons: Extremely loud, makes random ticking sounds. Never experienced this with WD before.

Very unnerving. Does not inspire confidence.

Overall Review: Meh.

Hi Josiah,

We regret hearing about your experience with WD Red Hard disk drive and appreciate your time for providing the feedback. Current drive technology dictates that some noise will occur during normal drive operation. The type and volume of noise are dependent on whether the are drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation.

In order to isolate the cause of the drive failure, it is recommended to connect the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer and check the drive for any damage or defects.

The Best practice is to run diagnostics with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

"Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows":

"How To Tell If The Noise or Sound An Internal Drive Makes is Normal"
https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=568&s=

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

"How to get an RMA to replace a defective product, or obtain a power supply or USB cable for a WD product":

We would like to get a chance to work with you directly to determine the root cause of this abnormal behavior and help provide a positive resolution. You can contact us by phone regarding the Newegg review. We'd be happy to help.

Not a NAS drive, this drives uses SMR tech, stay away 7/16/2020 10:19:18 AM

Pros: cheap

Cons: SMR write technology!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT USE IN A NAS UNIT!!!!

Overall Review: I wish I could return all of my newer WD Red EFAX drives in exchange for older EFRX drives with CMR write. I will never buy a SMR type drive ever again. SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm adding my name to the Western Digital Class action law suit, They hid that fact that they switched to SMR and still called it a NAS drive .

WD selling non NAS drives as NAS 7/13/2020 8:16:30 PM

Pros: Might be a good paperweight, that's about it.

Cons: This is not a NAS drive and is being sold as a NAS drive.

Overall Review: I bought this WD Red 6TB back in 12/2019 to go in my Synology DS412+ to replace an existing WD Red 3TB that is 4 years old. WD is now putting out documentation that these drives are actually not NAS rated drives. How could a reputable company let this happen. The whole purpose in buying a NAS rated drive is to put in a NAS system. This drive is barely acceptable for an archival system where you are only doing straight backups with no updates to the data already archived. Stay away at all cost if you want your RAID to stay intact and performing at peak performance. Google class action lawsuit against WD because of this issue. My drive is still in it's original sealed package and I refuse to put it anywhere near my RAID.

Shingled Magnetic Drive - Not Great for NAS! 7/11/2020 7:15:22 AM

Cons: - When I purchased this drive, it was not labeled as an SMR drive. I replaced some conventional drives with two of these drives about 6 months ago. It took a LONG time to rebuild the array, which seemed normal enough and I was glad to have the extra space. However, it has been an incredibly slow drive ever since as I have a lot of large files that take forever to sync between by two NAS's.
- Because of the slow speed of the shingled magnetic recording, the syncing seems to timeout, then it loses track of changes and I end up with duplicate files. I have done everything I can to troubleshoot this and have come to the conclusion that the only thing it can be is the drive itself.
- There is currently a class action lawsuit against WD for the misrepresentation of these drives as suitable for use in NAS's.
- Don't buy if you want to use in any kind of critical or responsive system.

Overall Review: Would not recommend.

FALSELY ADVERTISED PRODUCT (by Manufacturer) 7/3/2020 1:39:25 PM

Pros: There are absolutely NO pros about this product.

Cons: Refer to class action lawsuit in regards to this line of drives, using SMR technology, which is unacceptable for use in NAS applications, which the drive is specifically marketed for. Prepare for extremely long read/write times. It would be faster to ZIP your files onto floppy disks.

Overall Review: DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE.

Didn't work for me 6/28/2020 4:30:15 AM

Overall Review: These drives didn't work for me. I ordered two drives which I intended to use as a RAID1 array in a Terra Master enclosure connected to a Mac Mini. After installing and formatting the drives, I found that they were: a) exceptionally noisy, b) slow to write data, and c) unable to complete the transfer of large data files. I subsequently removed the two drives from the enclosure and reformatted them individually on a SATA docking station where I continued to have the same sorts of problems with noise and with large file transfer. I benchmarked these drives against two other drives (a WD 1TB Blue and a Seagate IronWolf 6TB) neither of which had any problems with noise or large files.

The WD Red 6TB drives were shipped in their plastic wrappers but without the larger standard packaging one might find on a store shelf. The box they came in was small and had some bubble wrap, but not enough to fully cushion the drives. It is possible they were damaged in shipping.

I don't know if this will sour me on WD in the future. I have used many WD drives in the past without any major problems, but this is the first time I've used their Red drives. Since having these problems I have read that some of these large capacity WD Red drives have problems working properly in RAID arrays. I will be returning these drives and for my current application I am going forward with the Seagate IronWolf drives instead.
