"Are you asking about a physical drive that you insert into this enclosure? If so, then I wouldn't could on booting an OS from an external drive unless you really know what you're doing. Otherwise, your question is unclear. Normally, this kind of a device is used for backups and data transfers. I hope this helps you."

Question 4

What's with the weird cable?  I was expecting a standard micro-USB (3.0) connector, but this looks more like a mini-USB!  That even compatible with USB 3.0 speeds?  I did search online for more information about USB 3.0 plugs and find no mention of one like this.  :(

It is a mini-USB 3 cable. The interface on this enclosure is definitely USB 3, and works  reliably with Windows and Mac. The mini-USB connector on the drive itself seems to be more durable/sturdy than the micro connector on one of my other enclosures.

I have a Seagate Momentus XT with SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ interface from an older broken laptop.  Will this enclosure work with that type of interface?

As long as the drive is a 2.5" SATA Harddrive, it will work.

Is the SATA interface compatible with an SSD using SATA 3.0?

The spec says it supports Sata 1 and II. I have installed a Kingston 64 GB SSD and it works, but not full speed.

Question 7

Does this support Trim for SSDs?  If you put an SSD in it and plug into a Win 8 or 10 PC, then right click on the drive, got to Properties then Tools, does it show Defragment or does it show Optimize?  Optimize means it supports Trim.  Defragment means Windows can't tell it's an SSD.  Some enclosures support Trim & SSDs, most do not

All I know is putting in a drive in this (and many other) enclosures work perfectly.  I usually record TV shows in FAT 32 which works in everything OK.  Your questions about Trim, defragment - I'm so glad most of my equipment is Apple.  None of this confusing windows stuff applies or is necessary.

I have one unit and installed a 9.5mm SSD. Regarding your question, I measured the encclosure and my SSD inside it and the max drive would be 9.5, there is no space for a larger one.
