How does this machine compare to similar-sized Zojirushi models?

Have been using this one for about one year now (I use it two times a day), still working great. Zojirushi might be better because it's much more expensive, lol,  but I would say 80% of people won't feel any difference about the taste.

I just received this rice cooker. The bottom four buttons (Pre-set, Hrs, Min, Cooking Timer) are much harder to press than the other buttons. In fact, I need to hold the back of the cooker to keep it from sliding back when I press them. Have other people noticed this with their cookers, or is mine an exception? Thanks.

I bought two of these rice cookers, one small one and one large one.  The buttons on mine all feel the same way and I have not experienced what you are experiencing.  Your's might be defective.

I want to cook brown and black rice. The "brown" function appears to be for scorching the rice when used for clay-pot cooking. I find nothing in the manual on cooking brown rice. I tried in regular mode and it's OK, but not as tender as I hoped with brown jasmine. Any tips?

i have the same issue with brown rice. What I do is when the cooker starts beeping, I switch it to warm and stir the rice up evenly, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and it's ready to eat. You just have to go through trials-and-errors a few times to get the water level correctly.

Brown rice typically needs to be cooked a little more thoroughly than white rice to reach the right softness. Does this rice cooker have a brown rice feature?

Is there a timer on this?  Say I leave for work in the morning, can I set a timer so it starts cooking the rice an hour before I get home?

Yes. You will need to use the preset function on the rice cooker. First use the MENU button to select the Regular mode or whatever mode you want to do (brown mode is not supported for this). Press the PRESET button, press the HRS button to set the hour. Press the MIN button to set the minutes. The time setting used by the rice cooker is 24hour mode. So if you want the rice cooker to start cooking at 5:30PM, you'll want to set it for 17:30 and then press start. It will start cooking when the set time is reached. You'll have to set it every time you want to do this. You'll also want to make sure that the CLOCK on the rice cooker is set correctly before doing this.
