Hi can this be used for dvd roms? As in 4 dvd drives ?

Accepted Answer

Nope.
Standard sized 3.5" SATA hard drives can be inserted (and probably 2.5" or others with appropriate adapters to conform to standard 3.5" size and connector locations).  CDs and DVDs are 4.7", so there's no hope of fitting such drives for those.

This cage is the size of three 5.25" drives stacked, i.e. it requires a block of space that would / could be used for three 5.25" disc drives one on top of the other.

Question 2

Will this take 2.5" drives with an adapter?

An adapter isn't needed to mount a 2.5" drive to a tray of the Rosewill RVS-SATA-Cage-34...

2.5" drives usually have two sets of screw holes for mounting them to caddys or trays: four on the side and four on the bottom. Mount a 2.5" drive to a tray of this unit using the four holes on the bottom of the tray that line-up with those on the bottom of the drive.

Would I be able to fit a DVD drive in here in some way? My case barely has 3 5.25" bays lol.

Does it include the sleds for the 5.25 HDDs?

No. You have to have three empty stacked 5.25 slots, and then this is a box that  fits into them and holds four 3.5 inch drives inside it.

Can you power on/off each drive separately?

Accepted Answer

The power is always connected through the back, but you can hot swap drives which are not reserved by the system.  If you plan on doing this, you should probably turn off write caching and use the disk management plugin (diskmgmt.msc) to take the disk offline first, but generally Windows recognizes drive changes without issues (I do it on occasion and it hasn't been an issue).

Can I put this in a n vida cooler master case just by taking out two bays?

I think it depends on the case.  The cage is well designed and appears to be designed to fit any case that will accommodate a 4 tray cage.  I don't think that answers your question very well.  Sorry...

Question 7

If I were to remove the fan will it begin to beep (indicating the fan is not running)?

Accepted Answer

No.  It will not beeping as it is a stand-alone fan (i.e., not connected to any circuit board but power supply).  You don't really need this fan if your computer case has good air flow.

Question 8

Just had a molex to sata converter cable catch fire inside my case and a simple search on Google shows that this is a very common occurrence. VERY concerned about the molex power connectors in this now. Has anyone had any issues with the molex power connectors on these? And how long have you had it with or without issue?

In your research you should have also found that reported fires involve the 15-pin, SATA power-end of only a specific type of injection molded, (vs. press-fit), SATA-to-MOLEX power adapter. These units have MOLEX connectors in the rear that are soldered directly to a small PCB for power distribution to very different 22-pin, SATA connectors, also soldered to the PCB.

I've had mine since September 2014 with zero problems.

Will this be compatable with the Rossewill RSV-L4000 case?

I own an L4000 case and I bought this specifically for installation in mine.  Take out either of the two drive cages and slide this in with the quick-release plates;  Technically it should also fit in place of the 3x 5-1/4 drive bays if you have no optical drives.  Just be sure to enable hot-plug in your bios for the SATA channels you plug this in to if you need hot-plug-ability.

Question 10

I just got some sas drives, but I don't have a sas controller.  Looking for a way to convert SATA at the host to SAS at the drive.  Will this cage work?

Not possible. SAS has a slightly different physical connection that allows for dual paths but most importantly the SAS command set is completely incompatible with SATA. I have seen a SAS to SATA adapter but you will not be able to use a cage.
