Great enclosure if... 11/28/2015 8:21:21 AM

Pros: Reviewed this before and I still stand by everything I said.

Cons: In my last review I mentioned how (thru research) I found that the enclosure only supports 1.5 TB drives maximum (which Newegg doesn't mention under Specifications) and I put in a 2 TB drive. Everything was fine for a long time, until I filled the drive about half way. I ran Scandisk on the drive and found quite a few errors and some corrupted files that couldn't be recovered. I thought the drive was going bad, so I got another 2 TB drive to back up everything. After thoroughly testing the drive, it came up clean with no detectable errors. Also I had trouble getting the drive to work via eSATA, though USB worked fine. I've since moved my drive to my PC via a USB adapter and it's run perfectly ever since. I guess you could chalk this up to ignorance, but nothing in the specifications indicate the enclosure's supported maximum capacity. Every enclosure listing I've seen since buying this one shows what the maximum supported size is, so maybe this listing was one that made them include that important fact. Shame on you, Newegg.

Overall Review: NOTE: The enclosure supports up to 1.5 TB drives maximum! DO NOT put in larger drives, as you'll start to develop errors and drive issues!

Unreliable, poor product 5/14/2012 8:52:05 AM

Pros: Fast swappable with convenient thumb screws, eSATA

Cons: Fails horribly! We first ordered this product and received a DOA item. It had a power issue where the fans would power on and off, repeatedly, and it would not connect with the PC. We sent it back and received another unit. DOA again, same issue. (We tested at different locations and different PCs to ensure it was not an external issue). We sent it back and received another unit, which we have used sporadically for the last 11 months just fine. Then today it started having the same power issue again. This is a very unreliable product and I am very dissatisfied with it.

Why hast thou forsaken me!!! 10/10/2011 1:15:03 PM

Pros: Just about everything is engineered superbly:
- USB 2.0 & eSATA
- comes with eSATA expansion slot bracket (most eSATA enclosures do NOT)
- 2 cooling fans
- slot sized just enough for a 3.5" HDD, no "dead air" in enclosure
- awesome huge vertical blue activity LED
- it looks like something between Boba Fett's spacecraft and a Romulan warbird -- geek points for alienesque styling
- installs sooo easy, slide the drive in, the mount screw can be tightened with thumb, tighten the set screw to secure the lid
- it has a neat lever inside that allows you to "eject" the HDD with incredible ease
- eSATA and USB 2.0 cables included, both interfaces work great with my SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 HD204UI 2TB drive

Both my Dad and I are rocking this enclosure with a Samsung F4.

Cons: Newegg has deactivated this marvel. BRING IT BACK NEWEGG! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! Isn't Rosewill just a Newegg hardware division? That means you can decide to manufacture these cases if you want. At least make a new revision with USB 3.0 & eSATA so I can get more of these!!!

Overall Review: This is one of the best products I've purchased from Newegg. Form and function is A+ on this one. I just want the opportunity to get more. Is that too much to ask?

SLOW 10/5/2011 4:25:35 AM

Pros: Easy access to Drive
Stands on edge without stand
Single pin power connector

Cons: Read and Writes with USB 2.0 is about half the speed of my other cases with the same Drive installed (Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 2TB 5900 RPM SATA
6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive)

Vibrates against hard surfaces a little with the fans

Fans require clearance (unlike WD book drives)

Collects fingerprints

Overall Review: I bought this case to backup critical files on my server. It was the cheapest on NE with free shipping. I have not tried the e-sata but the usb is very slow for some reason (-1 egg). I would have given -2 eggs if not for the easy drive access. Fan noise is what you would expect.

Bad Fans, Good Case 8/24/2011 2:47:00 AM

Pros: Let me preface this review by stating I have owned this HD Enclosure for approximately 3 years now. Throughout this time, I have used this enclosure on a 1 TB drive that is transferred between systems using both USB and eSATA on a regular basis, and I have been satisfied with it's service. Both the eSATA port and USB port provide quick, reliable data transfers. The fans provided adequate cooling, when they were new.

I have accidentally dropped this enclosure on asphalt, concrete, and hardwood floors while the drive was off and being transferred between systems. The highest it has fallen was 4 1/2 feet onto asphalt. While the surface of the enclosure is now slightly marred, no loss of data or damage to the drive seems to have occurred at all.

Cons: The fans are my only complaint about this external enclosure. Initially, it was a selling point - keep the drive cool while it is in use. And, at first, they worked fine. However, the left fan soon began to whine a few months after purchase. It did not seem to matter if I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, oiled it with WD-40 or Silicone lubricant, or dusted the interior with canned air. I even broke the enclosure down into component pieces and cleaned each section. It would quiet down for a few hours, or days, and then start screaming again. I finally removed it from the enclosure entirely, and operated it with the single fan remaining.

Now, the final remaining fan has also given out, and I'm looking for replacements. Which are hard to find. And expensive. Two 21db 50mm x 10mm fans with the proper pin number and connector type plus shipping will run me as much as this enclosure sells for from Newegg. So, I'm debating on just buying a new one.

Overall Review: I was initially irked at the eSATA port, due to Window's (Vista and Win7) lack of e/SATA hotswap support. This issue was resolved upon finding a freeware SATA re-polling / hotswap utility named 'Hotswap!.exe' . Tell it to scan for hardware changes and turn your enclosure off, then on again, and Hotswap! picks it up. Not quite as useful as some enclosures that Windows can see regardless, but having a work-around is better than needing to reset my computer every time I want to use the drive.

Great Enclosure & Service-Rosewill & Newegg 8/18/2011 3:02:53 AM

Pros: Nice looking with two fans. Keeps the drive nice and cool.

Works great with a 750GB WD (7200 16MB) on my Openbox S9 HD PVR Satellite Receiver (FW 8-15-2011). Does not cause the S9 to not power down.

Also works on my desktop and laptop (Win7). Use it for recording then video edit on the PII X4 955 BE. Thumb screws are very nice for changing drives. USB 2.0 and eSATA, with all connecting cables.

Awsome drive enclosure. For sure *****!!!

Cons: First, this is not really a con. A friend has one of these and has been using it for a couple of years. My first one had a bad power supply. We used his PS and it worked fine. I sent the whole thing back and got a new one that is working as expected. Newegg issued me a return shipping label so I didn't have to pay return shipping. I'm glad, because I got it on sale and return S&H would've ate up my savings.

THIS IS NOT A CON because every product has a dud now and then. It don't make'em all bad.

THANK YOU NEWEGG.

Overall Review: I contacted Rosewill by email and told them what I had found (works with another PS). They contacted Newegg and emailed me right back...This all took about 2 or 3 hours...Very fast. Might have been only 1-2 hours as I was busy diagnosing the drive etc.

It powered up, then went to a STEADY BLINK. Drive would spin up, then stop, blink, spin, stop etc.

I AM VERY HAPPY NOW and it should last. My friend has had no problem with his in two or more years, not even fan problems. Those can be replaced cheaply. Don't let complaints about the fans stop you. Lots of things need maintenance. One post here tells how to oil the fans. Been doing that to PS fans for YEARS! It works.

Works great! 8/16/2011 4:31:03 PM

Pros: I bought this for a bare bones backup of another device and it has worked flawlessly for me so far. The light is subtle and not too bright. The included bracket for eSATA was great, some other options do not come with one.

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: I may replace the hdd I installed it as this will become a permanent fixture.
