Too loud to be practical 8/25/2019 10:49:48 PM

Pros: Works

Cons: There's one fatal flaw in the design of this product, and it's named AGE AFS110. That's the little fan in the back, and when the bearing on that goes bad (and judging by the other reviews it will) it gets BAD.

Disassembling the unit is somewhat unintuitive but doable, but due in part to the fact that there's no speed control on the fan I'm not sure whether to replace that with a better part, lubricate the existing fan, use this without the fan installed, or just give up on it entirely.

Overall Review: Would not recommend. This sort of product is designed to make inserting and removing hard drives convenient, but the convenience factor disappears entirely if you have to remove the entire mobile rack to deal with the fan issue.

Crazy easy to set up. 7/4/2017 5:19:21 PM

Pros: Pop it in to the 5.25" tray, add a 3.5". Boom, Bob's your uncle.

Ignore the complaints of "the fan is too loud". I have four huge fans running in my tower and it is not as noisy as they are. Standard fan noise. (see below)

Cons: MOLEX power cable. I get why, but if your power supply doesn't have one natively, something to take note of.

Edit, six months later: the fan comment above is incorrect. The fan at the back in now crazy loud, to the point where I thought my hard drive was dying. I would avoid this product.

good idea, poor execution 1/21/2017 1:05:16 AM

Pros: cost - free after rebate, cooling fan - single molex cable vs 2 SATA power cables is a good concept

still operational

Cons: flimsy feel, layout of SATA ports means only one right-angle connector can be used. Some SSDs not recognized when used in 2.5" bay. Also hot-swap implies "easy removal", not the case - some SSDs will jam in the bay - not an easy task to remove if they're 9.5mm. A little disappointing to say the least

Overall Review: luckily the SSDs had a metal casing and a paper clip in the mounting screw hole did the trick - otherwise the SSDs would be permanently mounted

update 1/17: fan did get progressively louder - now seriously buzzing like an old DVD writer.
Kevin G. must be hearing-impaired cuz it's definitely way above ambient

Rosewell Drive Bay 11/25/2016 10:14:37 AM

Pros: - Easy to install
- Supports both 2.5 and 3.5 drives and can run both at once (separate power)

Cons: - Its the loudest component in my PC, that fan on the back just hums away... I may unplug it until I need to use it.

Overall Review: Its a low price option to have front loading removable bays for both laptop and desktop harddrives, as long as you dont mind the irritating buzz.

Good Unit, but for Home Use Only 11/12/2016 10:33:09 AM

Pros: No unfiltered front grill
Cooling fan
Locks (to keep toddlers out)
Easy drive insertion
No complicated backplane, just SATA pass-thru to mobo

Cons: No on/off switch
Drive extraction is wonky
Fan is always-on. SHOULD only run when drive inserted.
Build quality is for light-duty use only
Molex power plug (hardly a deal breaker, but what are they thinking?)

Overall Review: EDIT: Ejections got more and more difficult over time. It started to feel like it would break so I examinedthe bay and noticed that some idiot had placed a "QC Passed" sticker inside the otherwise glass-smooth drive bay and it was starting to peel back and making the 3.5" HDD's get stuck. I had to use a clean putty knife and some citrus-based adhesive remover to get that fixed. So I decided that while I was in there, to use a q-tip to coat a dead 3.5" HDD at any wear spots, plus around the SATA plugs (not the metal part) with some automotive silicone spray. In-and-out and repeat. Once dry I tested several of my regular 3.5" backup HDD's and they eject perfectly now. :)

Little stinker got VERY LOUD. Both from vibration and noisy bearing. Difficult to remove until you know how. You must (1) remove all external Philips screws, (2) open both doors, (3) pull the black metal rear panel backwards. It will slip back just enough for fan access. I had to pry back gently on the rear panel while pushing the fan up-and-out b/c the fan seemed to just slightly catch on the top panel. Be gently and it'll flex not break. A very small flat-head screw-driver covered the plug/unplug of the fan connector (be careful of the PCB). Note that it uses reverse polarity, so most replacement fans won't work. You could use a paper-clip to push-in the pin-retainers and switch the wires, but I find that it too often leaves the connector weak after doing this. I just peel-back the sticker on the fan, and use a mixture of white-grease with a little WD-40 to carry it down into the bearing. This combo seems to last for a very long time on most fans. Then clean with q-tip and brake/contact cleaner. Once dry, rubber cement and a clamp (or tape) to glue the sticker back on. Reassemble. Now I cut a small piece of cardboard to use as a shim between the fan and rear panel. more vibration. Fan is now quiet.

This unit appears to be a re-worked StarTech HSB2535SATBK selling for half the price. I have thus far used it with an 8tb Seagate 3.5" drive only. Hot-plugs, because my motherboard allows this. Most newish ones do. If yours is older then check your chipset specs or get an add-on SATA card. The doors push closed just fine. But opening the door with a drive inserted requires sticking a finger in (to support the hinge, just in case) and once open giving the drive a slight shake with fingertip, at which time it pops right out. The LED's register activity and are a bit bright, but are not the awful super-bright ones. Fan noise is unnoticeable in my 5-fan case. 40/60mm fans always get loud with time, but it appears to just slip out the top of unit for later removal/replacement. Doors lock by way of any small screwdriver (included), which is good for home use. No keys to keep track of, but toddler-safe. Not secure against any real intruder. I hope for long-life but don't feel at all confident that I will see it. Especially due to the wonky drive extraction, but it's cheap and works fine for now. Time will tell.

Does serve the intented purpose but has issues 7/23/2016 12:24:46 PM

Pros: - Does indeed allow me to have two drives in one 5.25" slot with some work

Cons: - Molex power connector for 2 SATA drives. What year is this? 1998?
- VERY flimsy. If you plan on constantly swapping drives in and out then look for another product. This one will disintegrate.
- The fan noise if rather bad. I can hear this high-pitched tiny fan from another room.
- Some drives simply won't fit/seat properly. I had a hard time getting a Seagate 3.5" drive in there and had to reseat a 2.5" SSD a couple of times because my machine wouldn't boot.

Overall Review: - I had to disconnect the fan since it was driving me nuts. While doing so, I had a chance to look at how this unit is constructed inside. The levers that are supposed to pull your drives out are all plastic and I actually broke one of the units while trying to get a drive out.

Mediocre product. 6/25/2016 3:03:01 PM

Pros: -Holds my 2.5" SSD and 3.5" HDD.
-2TB drives work

Cons: -Loud when I haven't used my computer for a while
-Fan seems to be grinding a bit from time to time
-Will be replacing it soon or buying a better product
-Hinges feel like they'll break if you try taking out the 3.5" drive,
-Can't close the 2.5" bay while the 3.5" bay is open.
-Have the be really careful when trying to take out drives, but they're more of a permanent placement.

Overall Review: -Works, only complain is the fan and bay issues. Seems to be common, but the fan is replaceable if you want to tinker with it and have a spare fan for it. Only buy it if you don't mind some noise coming from it once in a while. Don't see any performance drops so that's always a plus. IF your system has no molex connections then you're better of finding a different product or buying an additional adapter to make this work.

Worked for 6 months 6/15/2016 5:57:52 PM

Pros: For those 6 months it did indeed work.

Cons: After 6 months, not eligible for a return, it stopped working.

Overall Review: One day I turned my computer on and it was making it very loud noise. Powered down, took the drives out of it, tested both of them, drive were fine. Plugged the aforementioned Rosewill drive in, it makes a loud, grinding noise. It will now sit in my computer, unplugged, doing nothing.

What a waste.
Would not recommend.
