What additional hardware (cables etc.) do I need to connect this to a desktop computer?

For most laptops you should first ensure its anle to have its harddrive removed which isnt a problem for most usually youll literally just slide it into the slot the harddrive was in. for desktops the cables are attached to your power supply if its non modular as well as a data cable to the motherboard usually these cables are either provided or included in your powersupply.

Will the 256 gig ssd be worth it for the existing computer?  Will I have to purchase other items with it?  How much faster will the memory run with this item?

Hi Bruce,  I use this 128GB SSD in almost all my refurbished laptops.  I run a ministry called "Laptops for Missionaries".  It improves performance of the Laptop by at least 6x.  Manufacturers say 10X, but I believe it is more like 6x in reality.   As for the 256GB SSD vs the 128GB SSD, that depends on what your placing on your laptop.  If it is standard Word documents, then stay with 128GB SSD.  However if you do a lot of pictures or videos on your laptop, then it is best to use a larger SSD.    Will you have to purchase other items with it?  Yes you will need an external SATA enclosure (about $10) to clone your old hard drive to the new SSD, you can use free "Macrium Reflect" and clone the old drive to the new SSD.  See YouTube for a video on how to clone an SSD with Macrium Reflect, or google search that topic. Hope that answers your questions for you.

How much will this improve memory speed with the current components of this computer?

The biggest impact you will see is boot time being reduced to a few seconds. Due to the small size of this drive you will be picking and choosing which programs to install here and which to install on a secondary drive, but if you do have a large program or big data files loaded to this SSD, their load time will be greatly reduced compared to a normal 7200 rpm HD. Unless you are playing a game or running another program that is heavy in continuous data transfer (video editing) from this drive you will not see much improvement once the program is loaded.

What Cables do I need to order to install this critter, which came free (but shipped separately )with my new HP EliteDesk 700 G1 MicroTower ??
Looks like a place for power cable similar to the one on the mounted HD in the tower, and there is a four-wire apparent data connector with a second connector scabbed into the four wires...
How do I get this critter up and running ???

1) OKGEAR 18" SATA 6 Gbps Cable, Straight to Left Angle W/ Metal Latch, Black, Backward Compatible 3 Gbps and 1.5 Gbps

2) StarTech 6" 4 Pin Molex to SATA Power Cable Adapter

3) BYTECC Bracket-35225 2.5" HDD/SSD Mounting Kit For 3.5" Drive Bay or Enclosure

If you would rather not install it may I suggest:

1) OKGEAR OK108 2.5 inch SATA to USB 2.0 Adapter Cable w/2.5" HDD Protection Case 
It works perfectly as an external drive.

I have noticed since i replaced my laptop drive with this particular drive, it boots up faster but Ive not noticed anymore improvements yet. My laptop is a compaq, I bought it refurbished 3 yrs ago and it seemed to be actingalittle sluggish lately. Will this item help speed up or optimize anything else in my laptop?

Any program installed on the SSD should experience a significant performance improvement in load times. For example Word tends to load pretty slow but will load faster if installed on the SSD. This will only benefit programs installed on the drive, so any programs that are running off a second HDD, such as a repurposed drive in the optical carriage, will not benefit. Given the size of this drive, there are real limits to what can be installed on it beyond the OS. Further the level of benefit you experience can be limited by the connections on your motherboard (SATA III is much faster than SATA II), the wires used to connect the drive, and even the RAM and CPU for processor intensive programs, to say nothing about GPU intensive processes. Many mobile HDD are only 5400rpm with little caching available, so there was little impetus to install SATA III connectors that were more expensive and wouldn't be maximized anyway. Without more information about what model you have or what you're using it for and how you're managing resources, it's hard to say why you're not experiencing better performance overall. Basically you should see improvements in load times for programs installed on the SSD even if attached via a SATA II connection, which this drive should be able to max out yielding read write speeds about four times that of your old HDD.

is drive compatible with hp compaq presario f572us notebook?

Googled hp Compaq Presario f572us and looked at "specifications", and the drive in this model is SATA, so yes this will work in this machine.  You can use Macrium-Reflect free version to make a clone of the drive, to do that you will need an external USB drive, which is about $5 to $10.

How do I install this in the Acer AXC-705-UR53 ?

Precisely placed detonation charges will get the case cover off.  Wear goggles and hearing protection.  Don't breathe the fumes.  Don't do this at home.  Don't cross a black cat's path.

Once you have the cover off, get mounting rails if needed and a screwdriver to screw it in, plug in the cables, use cloning software to dupe  your old OS drive to it, unplug the OS drive, set the new drive as preferred boot device in bios, then have a beer because you are done.

Is this a good drive for caching on my 500gb Seagate? I figure if it doesn't work out I can re-format it and use it exclusively.

This would certainly do the job. You could easily get away with using a smaller ssd if you are just using it to cache, unless you are running something heavy-duty like a server. If you are just going for better system response time I would just put your os on the ssd and leave non critical memory on the HDD.
