Stay Away! 6/4/2015 9:40:04 AM

Pros: Easy to setup, I liked the fact that inserting and removing the drives don't require any tools.

Cons: These enclosures have faulty power supplies that will die on you and cost $100 to get it replaced from Sans Digital. Had two e-sata and one usb 3.0 fail within two years. Sans Digital tech support is hard to get a hold of and even harder to get response from. Steer clear from these enclosures.

A good value 4/5/2011 5:16:55 AM

Pros: - Price (especially with the Samsung 2TB Bundle that was offered)
- Runs Cool and Quiet
- No blue access lights on the front of the unit

Cons: - The cops might pull me over for running 'ground effects.' :) [I'm referring to the blue light on the fan]
- Compared to the MediaSonic ProBox, installation is a little more annoying.

Overall Review: One of the enclosures arrived with the fan disconnected right out of the box. I didn't notice this immediately but once HD Sentinel reported temperatures of 45C, the fix was easy: remove the fan, connect it, test it and replace the fan.

These were purchased to replace two MediaSonic ProBox enclosures (USB2/eSATA) and I will state that after over an hour of writing to an enclosure with four WD Green Drives in it, the temperatures barely got past the mid-30's. The older enclosure couldn't do this.

The bundle price with the 2TB Samsung drive made this a no-brainer as the price for both items was considerably lower than the non-sale price of the enclosure. My original intention was to purchase the 8-Bay enclosure but since that one needed two eSATA leads to the PC, and it didn't come with 4TB of storage, this made more sense to me.

It's unfortunate that NewEgg has deactivated this product as it is a good one.

OK Enclosure....sometimes weird detection issues. 3/28/2011 4:47:05 AM

Pros: 4 drives via e-sata, cheap! Fantastic aesthetics. Easy drive mounting (BUT NOT HOT SWAP). Compatibility with Linux* (see Other Thoughts), windows 7, and FreeBSD* (see Other thoughts). Faster than USB2 (not sure about USB3).

Cons: Maximum 150MB/second from the port multiplier. With modern drives, you'll hit this with one drive. Sometimes all drives don't detect at startup (tried with 3 different controllers, 3 different OS's) but usually a reboot fixes this. If you don't reboot much don't worry too much about it.

Overall Review: FreeBSD: To get working with FreeBSD: Add ahci_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf, then it seems to work fairly well (within speed limitations listed above). If you are connecting to a silicon image (3124/3132, etc) controller, also add siis_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf as well.

Linux: I had major problems under 2.6.38. Use the 2.6.35 kernel (ubuntu maverick works well) but you MUST disable NCQ in libata (well, I did on asus U3S6) by adding the following to your kernel line: libata.force=noncq (or perhaps it's libata.noncq=force I can't remember) and then it seems to work OK (only on 2.6.35...2.6.38 was still broken). Windows worked ok most of the time but sometimes didn't detect all the drives, even after rescanning the controller. the noncq fix doesn't seem to work in 2.6.38

Manufacturer Response:
Thank you for purchasing our product.

Port multiplier port is using a single eSATA cable, which could cause performance bottleneck. Please refer to the latest driver for Silicon Image 3124 or 3132 for connection issues. There are also Highpoint eSATA controller card support PM. Please contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail us at tech@sansdigital.com for further assistant.

Working as Described 3/11/2011 10:05:53 AM

Pros: price, price & price (seventy six) with coupon. Staggered spin up

Cons: power input & I/O switch unit is not tightly secured, noticeable play. blue LED fan (what is the point of these?)

Overall Review: bought this to hold the odd ball drives that have been lying around, 640, 2 x 500 & 320. they all seem so small now. JBOD config attached to SYBA SD-PEX40031 PCI-Express 2.0 SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card with another SANS Digital. Two internal ports of PCIe card have RAID 0 WDs attached.

Excellent JBOD Enclosure! 3/6/2011 10:59:31 AM

Pros: - Plug and play if you have a port multiplier supported eSata port
- Supports upto 8tb
- Super fast transfers thanks to eSata
- Fan is quiet for the most part unless there is activity on all four drives. Keeps the drive cool
- Excellent design with a glossy black finish; non-obtrusive led lights for the hdd indicators

Cons: - Awfully bright blue light emitted from the fan - can't turn off the light

Overall Review: Just installed the second unit and it exceeded all my expectations! I have these hooked up to my pc and stream 1080p mkv and blu ray iso to boxee, htpc, and two wd tv live setups. Can stream to multiple sources without any hiccups. Please note that the only reason this unit got bad reviews is because the people purchasing it did not have a port multiplier supported eSata. That is not the unit's fault.

Excellent small disk tower 2/25/2011 9:11:00 AM

Pros: High quality build inside (strong rail tubing) and out (high gloss black finish.
Comes with set of thumb screws and with rails makes it easy to slide drives in and out.
Dual color individual indicators make it easy to know status of all within.
Allows simple mobility of quite a large amount of storage - ideal for moving around ripped Blu-ray movies.

Cons: With main cover on it is difficult to extract drives even if not secured down. Understood this is not like my pluggable SATA backplane I used in a dedicated 15TB full tower setup but would be nice.
Related to last - removing/installing main cover is finicky. I would have preferred individual side panels like a PC case to allow easy access to drives and thumb screws.
Ventilation is likely adequate but gets much hotter than my SATA backplanes.

Works well 2/19/2011 12:57:13 PM

Pros: Hooked 2 of these up to my mac pro (using 2 SoNNeT Tempo eSATA PCIe Cards). I'm running an old copy of Apple's ZFS on Snow Leopard and needed more drive bays to mirror my data (hence 2 PCI cards). Its fast and works well.

Cons: Two minor things: 1) It has a ridiculously bright blue light on the fan that shines out the back. I wish there was a way to disable this. Just seems kinda childish. 2) I find it odd that there's a door on the front. You have to screw the drives into the enclosure from the side -- which requires taking off the top/sides. I just don't understand why I'd want to open the door unless I opened the whole thing up. You really do want to screw the drives down. They vibrated a little when I tested not doing this. Just an design choice, but it made me think that I could just slide them in and lock them into place from the front only -- which would be nice.

Overall Review: The product clearly says it requires a port multiplier card. Macs have very few of these so I'm glad it didn't come with one (the brand they use isn't Mac compatible).
