Pros: Works Large Capacity 5 Year Warranty Better Value than Iron Wolf/Barracuda/14TB drives 7200 RPM Fast transfer rates
Cons: Cost - this will always be a complaint with someone!
Overall Review: Works perfectly in SuperMicro 847 case. Formatted is 12.733. Before anyone starts complaining, all manufactures state their capacity in TB meaning 14 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. So a true TB is 2^40 power. 12.733*2^40 = 14 TB. Same is for WD, Hitachi, etc. So far, humming along just fine in Raid 10 Configuration. Used for Work System Backups off laptops so very fit for purpose.
Overall Review: I'm loving these drives. They are a little bit overkill for a home NAS, but I wanted to build a shared volume that could take better advantage of my 10g network. I have 4 of them in a RAID10, and I'm loving the performance. In terms of noise, my only comparison is an array of 10TB Ironwolfs, and these Exos are louder. The Ironwolfs were never loud enough to be heard over the quiet NAS case fans, but the new Exos can be heard when they seek. I imagine most people buying enterprise drives don't care about noise, but when I was trying to decide on buying these drives (which were cheaper than the equivalent Ironwolfs), I couldn't find noise level data published anywhere. I would say the noise isn't bad, but I definitely have been moving frequently accessed shares back to my old array to keep these new disks from constantly seeking during the day. If I didn't have that choice, I would probably look into moving the NAS farther away from my desk. One of the 4 drives I originally ordered died during the initial scan that was performed while building the array. This actually caused kernel panics in my NAS that rendered the web interface inoperative until I removed the offending drive, so next time I will definitely run extended SMART tests on the individual drives before adding them to an array. The RMA on the dead drive went fine. I don't have a problem with drives arriving DOA every once in a while, as statistically this is just a fact of how hard drives are built and shipped, regardless of the model or brand. And the 4 I ended up keeping are working great!
Cons: Bad batch of drives
Overall Review: Very frustrating. I have to eat the shipping costs.
Pros: Replacement working great. Fast, big, cheap. What more can you ask for (other than not getting DOA)
Cons: DOA
Overall Review: Sigh.... I've had good luck with Seagate in the past, and I'll try again. Spins up and just makes clicking sounds. Not recognized by BIOS in several machines. I'll update after I get my replacement from New Egg.... After a painless replacement (about 1 week end-to-end from "it's failed" to new drive in hand) the new drive is working flawlessly. Still 1 egg off for the original DOA....
Pros: - The drives idle at 30-32 C and get up to 36-38 C at full load - Even at full load, the noise is much quieter than I expected - A single drive can get writes up to 260 megabytes per second and sustain a solid 220+ during large transfers
Cons: - None so far
Overall Review: I purchased a batch of drives as it was my first time running Seagate drives in many years. After a solid month of testing and burn in with no issues, I was convinced and bought a second batch. I am extremely happy with both purchases.
Pros: Worked with no issues, large capacity, pretty fast for mechanical drives
Cons: Not the quietest drives I have ever used.
Overall Review: I wanted to add a large amount of reliable storage to my home network on a budget. This seemed to be the best deal available for large capacity drives at the time. I paired two with a Synology DS220j. These booted and formatted with Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) in a few minutes with approximately 12.6 TiB total capacity. All in all, a great solution with no drama. For those of you in the previous reviews who are bad at math, and are complaining about the storage capacity, google "14 TB in GiB" for a helpful conversion. All hard drive manufacturers have been calculating advertised capacity in powers of 1000 since time immemorial. These drives are showing the exact capacity that I would expect on my NAS in powers of 1024 (13039 GiB or 12.7 TiB)
Cons: Very rarely do I have to return a product. Windows reported I/O error when trying to partition the drive. Troubleshooting: 1. Used a working control drive and plugged it into the same power and data SATA cables. That drive had no problems being partitioned or formatted. 2. To ensure it was not a proprietary issue I used Seagate's partitioning software and got the same IO error.
Overall Review: Seagate needs to test drives before sending them out to be sold. Additionally due to the fragility of these drives manufacturer packaging needs to be better. Turning off a server to install a drive takes time and money. Wasting businesses time (money) is not a good way of retaining customers. Having to do so twice due to the logistics and or general quality decisions in making and distributing a product should not be on the customer.
Pros: Bought 4 of these in January to update capacity for my Plex Media Server. When transferring files I was able to write up to 220 MB's at times though average speeds where in the 150/160 range. I replaced 3 5TB and 5 6TB drives. Was able to copy a full 6TB drive in just under 8 hours. One thing I noticed when disconnecting old drives several weeks later. The old drives where so hot I could not keep my hand on them more then a few seconds. I touched the new drives and they where barely warm. I have never seen a drive that runs this cool.
Overall Review: I will be purchasing another one shortly.
