Pros: High quality. Drives go in and come out smoothly. Nice design. While this does screw tightly into your case, the bay itself which houses the drives instead sits on these little black rubber discs, so any vibrations transfered to your case are reduced. If you look closely you can see them in the product photos. LED can simply not be plugged in, so it's never going to be annoying.
Cons: I feel like they could have done something to add a power switch, but that's not a big deal to me since SATA drives can be safely removed without powering down ,since thats a feature of the SATA interface and any SATA drive should be safe to hotswap. When I want to "turn off" one of these bays I simply open the door slightly and it turns it off by unplugging it.
Overall Review: If you do some digging and searching you'll find lots of rebranded models of this bay all with different logos and model numbers but they're practically all the same. Here are a few. The only differences between these models seem to be the wires for the LED. Rosewill has one. Model: RX-C525 Kingwin has one. Model: KF-1000-BK 3.5 Thermaltake has one. Model: N0023SN - This has one difference. A grey door. Sedna has one. Model: SE-IHD-31S I'm not really sure what's going on but I simply do not believe that StarTech makes these. As a result, if you've got a budget, I suggest you shop for the cheapest one that looks identical and buy that since I think they're all made by an unknown OEM and should all practically be the same. Right down to the rubber discs and the lock/key.
Pros: Pros: Almost everything about this design is quite good - the drawer goes in snuggly, makes a good connection, power & activity lamps on the front are nice. Everything is great right up until...
Cons: Cons: after removing and inserting the drive drawers a few times, the weak link is quickly exposed: it's the little key-lock/latch mechanism. As soon as the latch meets any resistance at all - which it often does even when the drive has been carefully and fully inserted - the (plastic, of course) locking mechanism breaks apart from the latching lever. Then the entire unit is toast (and you may or may not get a drive drawer stuck inside). This is NOT particular to one faulty unit - I bought six of these, and one by one they all failed in the same way. STAY AWAY!
Overall Review: If anyone discovers a well-made mobile SATA rack drawer/receiver combination, would love to know about it. Would glad have paid twice as much $ for trouble-free well-designed hardware. But these are cheap...and you get what you pay for.
Pros: Does what it's supposed to do without fuss. I bought two of these to build a hard drive-based backup system, and it works flawlessly for that. I appreciate not having to mess with buying and installing individual drive trays. Not having indicator lights simplifies the installation and is a plus for my particular application. No cooling problems with WD "Green Power" drives.
Cons: Price could be lower. The SYBA CL-HD-MROF looks like the identical product, but you save a few bucks.
Overall Review: With two of these, I can easily copy whole drives to install in new systems.
Comments: Beautiful high quality design with solid metal is quite heavy. It works as advertised with my 300GB Maxtor SATA drive. The drive slides out inside its own case and is protected by a suspended tray and rubber grommets. The handle to pull it out and hold it is practical. You need to use a key everytime when you insert it to lock it into place and activate the power to the unit. That can be hassle for some. I use this to backup important files and not as a daily drive. It allows me to take all the important documents with me to store in a safe place. However it is not possible to go to another PC and just hook it up as is in the case with USB drives. The software that comes with the unit is designed for hot swapping. It seems like it is designed for people using Windows 98 or NT. So I don't recommend installing it with XP since XP allows hot swapping SATA peripherals (and I have successfully done that with this unit). Just make sure to disable write caching for this drive in the device manager. My main complaint is the loud fan on the front of the unit. Therefore I only keep it turned on when I'm actually using it.
Pros: Inexpensive, functional, easy to install. Works very smoothly. Great for home use or likely most small office setups. The SATA connector mates with the drive with very little resistance, and because of this eject lever doesn't have to apply much force.
Cons: Very lightweight materials: the front is plastic, of a similar weight to most case front panels, the mounting points are extremely thin metal. There is a bit of flex if force is applied to the front of the bay (e.g., when seating a new drive). The mechanism is completely functional, but the latch is quite small, and it takes very little effort to undo it. I would hesitate to move a machine with drives installed in this bay (although it would likely be fine with the bay locked). The lock is handy for avoiding accidental removal, but I wouldn't count on it for security purposes.
Overall Review: This bay is exactly what it's supposed to be: functional and inexpensive. Clearly designed for light use, which is what I expected when I purchased it. No cooling fan; I'm happy with this, as it is going to be used once or twice a month for a periodic backup and for misc. other tasks, and I have good forced-air cooling around the bay. Your use case may vary. The LED is on a twisted cable similar to most chassis LEDs, and has no electrical connection with the drive itself. It could be connected to a motherboard header, HBA, etc. The SATA backplane port is a straight pass-through, with no PCB at all. Hot swap works great in my setup (i.e., the bay handles the staging of the connection pins with no trouble) on a motherboard and OS that support it. The key will not sit in the lock for storage.
Pros: Worked well for a few months.
Cons: After 6 months, I went to change power supplies for a graphics card upgrade. I noticed the SATA connection kept coming off and then realized it was broken. A small bit of plastic broke, leaving the enclosure of the pins stuck in the cable. I came back to read the comments here on Newegg and saw a few others had the same problem. It was only $30, so not a huge loss, but it's still annoying.
Pros: Works Fairly Durable Powers off with key
Cons: The fan is HORRIBLE. My first one caught fire. (Bay still worked fine afterwards) Just take it out.
Overall Review: Would get a better rating if it didnt catch fire.
Pros: - Open, fanless design means I won't overheat a HD when the fan inevitably dies without my knowledge. I use a Western Digital Caviar Green HD to ensure cooler running and don't have anything except extra airspace in the bay above this rack. - Solid once installed into case (I also added additional screws just to be sure, even though they aren't actually necessary). - I was pleased to discover that although I CAN lock the door, I don't HAVE TO and the door will still shut securely.
Cons: I had to take an egg away because of the SATA connection on the rack. There's nothing more reassuring than the familiar CLICK you hear when your SATA data cable is securely fastened into it's port. In the case of this drive there is nothing for the cable's bracket to click onto, thus the connection could come loose over time. I might be a bit harsh in my judgment considering I know I connected the cable properly and now that I can change drives without opening the case it's less likely I'll be bumping the cable loose, but Startech should know it's time to update that latch- it's the only device in my entire case that doesn't allow bracketed SATA cables to lock in.
Overall Review: The brandname sticker on the front door came off very cleanly, which is great because I like to keep the front of my case nondescript. The "Serial ATA" multicolor paint, on the other hand, looks like it's there to stay forever. No biggie. There was a review that incorrectly claimed if you leave the bay empty you have to disable the SATA port in the MB's BIOS. I tested this myself with my Win7 system and found NO ERRORS if you leave the bay empty. If you prefer the HD activity light that's built into your case you can leave the case's wires connected to the appropriate pins on the MB. It's nice that you can opt to have the LED on this tray do it, but I left those cables alone because I prefer if my HD activity LED is the one next to the power LED, with all the wires running together and no extra ones going all over the place inside my case without any good reason.
