Great product over all 3/15/2016 3:42:44 PM

Pros: Reliable (this model) can't say for anything past this revision. Never had an issue with the unit.
Power button on the front for each bay verses having one power button in the rear (very handy)
A true work horse. I've used it for endless amount of hours doing IT saves, backups, etc with this device.

Cons: if you lose the power adapter the company will make you pay premium for the replacement, which is a bit... meh.
The power connect will disconnect if you move the base a bit too much. (a bit too loose).
The usb 2.0 will leave you wanting usb 3.0.

Overall Review: I've used this for many different types of drives. I had to sadly depart from startech.com to another company. I did lose the power adapter hoping I could get a replacement for a reasonable amount. Their team was very quick on the email responses. They quoted me just over 50% of a price of a newer unit. Who ever is in charge of replacement parts needs to re-evaluate their pricing especially for an outdated units / parts. An updated newer unit is about 60 new (at the time of this review), they offered 30 plus tax with free shipping. If it was 15-20 I would have stayed with the unit and their company, the high end offer left me wanting to no be a return customer. I was recommending this over thermaltake's version. If this isn't a deal breaker for anyone I would suggest the unit until it breaks or is no longer functioning.

SATA timeouts 4/9/2015 10:57:50 AM

Pros: My comments are all about e-SATA mode, I haven't tried USB. It is connected via an e-SATA bracket through to the Intel SATA ports in RAID mode on a Z77 chipset from Asus.

Data transfer rates are fine and it runs stably copying 4TB of weekly backups to a RAID-0 pair of HDDs.

Cons: Certain volume-management tasks cause timeouts for some reason. Formatting a disk, for example, hangs until Windows (server 2012 r2) logs:

"The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period."

On old 2011 Intel Rapid Storage Tech drivers, the format process completes after a timeout of a couple minutes. On newer 2013 and 2014 drivers, it never formats and often blue-screens.

This is true for HDDs and SSDs.

Plugging the same drives into the same e-SATA ports on the case directly, without this dock, runs without problems.

Overall Review: I mostly got this to plug big drives into to dump data on every week or so in rotation. It's fine for that. But when I want to add a new drive to the rotation, I have to format it using a different connection which is unfortunate. Why just formatting and some partitioning tasks? Maybe this doesn't pass some cache flush command correctly? I don't know.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Roger,

We are sorry to hear you are having issues with our dock, and we would be happy to work with you on this.

If you have not done so already, please check for any updates for the SATA controller, as this often helps alleviate compatibility issues. Also, are you able to test the dock with another eSATA connection, or test using USB? This will help us further isolate the cause of the problem.

If updates do not resolve the issue, please let us know the results of the testing, as well as the models of hard drives you are using with the dock. We’re always here to help with our lifetime technical support, so feel free to contact us and reference case number 303-216849 so we can assist you further.

Thank you,

4 years and still working 2/28/2015 11:22:03 AM

Pros: Still working 4+ years after purchase. I'm only using the USB port. I never tried the eSata port so I can't tell you how well it works.

It has been powering a 500GB and a 1TB drive for years. No complaints.

Cons: None.

Simple & works well 1/22/2015 8:27:24 PM

Pros: Easy access to two 3.5" or 2.5" SATA disks without opening the case. Makes room for a 3.5" disk by folding down a flap with a 2.5" cutout in it - better than my old dock which had a piece that had to be removed.

Cons: None for me. Other reviewers complain about needing two eSATA cables, and I can see how that's inconvenient, but enough controllers don't support port multipliers that I like not having to worry about compatibility.

Overall Review: Didn't try the USB interface. Requires two eSATA ports on your computer.

Pros: the esata part is cool but requires two controller connections

Cons: die way too soon [ 5 months of actual use stored past warranty ]

Fast, Expandable, Connection options 12/18/2014 12:15:44 AM

Pros: Bought this two years ago to dock a 2TB seagate to my laptop for more storage (I do a lot of gaming and record the footage) this external dock operated as if the drive was in my computer

Cons: took one egg off because of two things
one
wish i could have docked two drives through one eSATA cable instead of two

two
one of the eSATA cables ?lock fingers? broke, could still use cable but it was loose and didnt facilitate a reliable connection

Cheaply made 7/5/2014 7:58:35 AM

Pros: Fits two bare drives and has eSATA and USB ports

Cons: The power cord attaches very loosely to the unit. It very easily comes unattached unless it's kept very still. The power button to one of the slots became jammed and is now permanently on.

Piece of Junk 1/29/2014 6:13:57 PM

Pros: Started out good with separate esata I/Os working well.

Cons: After a year the esata died. Switched to USB, which worked for a few months more then also died. StarTech is now on my "list" of companies that I will never buy anything from again.

Overall Review: Good luck with StarTech and their poor quality
