what emulators will this controller work with?

It should work with most or all, though I've only personally tested it with Desmume, Nestopia, ZSnes, and Visual Boy Advance. I haven't run into any compatibility issues yet.

Is it compatible with republic of gamers video card. Games like Battlefield 3,Tomb raider, Skyrim or Portal series?

If you program it, yes. But I would look at different controllers

How long is the cord & what type connector does it have?

Hmm... I am not at home right now, but the cord is probably about four or five feet long and it has a USB connection.

Yes, one in each handle.

You need to configure the joystick in whatever game your son is playing. You can map out what control button does what function under the game settings. This is likely an option within the game.
