I have no place to plug this in. Is there an adaptor made to convert to a 4 pin molex?

It would be my guess there is an adapter available but using such would defeat the purpose of this device.  If you don't have a connector on your motherboard then you aren't going to get PWM control.  You might be better off to consider one of the many fan controllers Newegg has that would use fans that have 4 pin Molex connectors and allow you to control fans individually.  Hope this helps.

What's the difference switching between PWM & VR?

PWM means = Power management. the rheostat automatically monitors and speeds up or slows down the fan speed according to the temperature of the case. In VR mode = variable resistance you do it manually with the dial. You vary the voltage to the fan.
In VR mode the rheostat does not monitor the temperature of the case. It is basically a switch from low speed to high speed. Hope this helps.

So will this device control the speed of 3-pin fans? Or is the speed control only available for PWM fans?

This fan controller is designed to allow 3-pin fans to be controlled by your motherboard's PWM signal, if it has it. There is also a manual control to override the PWM signal. I use this controller with my 4-pin CPU fan in manual mode as the motherboard PWM controller allows my CPU temp to get too high during heavy loads.
