Windows ADS and LDAP integration allows the Synology DS214+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment with no need to recreate user accounts. Windows ACL support provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing users to enjoy native Windows experience.

Internet file access is simplified by the encrypted FTP server and the web-based File Station. HTTPS, the built-in firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level. For users who are always on the move, Synology provides a handy app, DS file, for popular mobile devices such as iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ devices and Windows Phone. Anything stored on Synology DS214+ can now be accessed remotely using DS file.

Rich Office Applications

Synology DS214+ runs on the award-winning operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which offers comprehensive applications and features designed specifically for office and business workgroups.

Cloud Station allows users to sync files among multiple devices, including Windows PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android tablets or phones, effortlessly keeping everything up-to-date. The Mail Server package turns Synology DS214+ into a dedicated mail service provider, while Mail Station, provides a webmail interface for users to access emails stored on Synology DS214+.

VPN Server package offers an easy VPN solution that turns your Synology DS214+ into a VPN server, providing a secure way of connecting to a private LAN at a remote location. RADIUS Server strengthens network security by overseeing wireless access authentication via RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) networking protocol.

As to environment security, Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to manage IP cameras deployed in your office or home, allowing users traveling miles away to safeguard the environment by watching live views, recording events, and taking snapshots with a computer or iOS/Android device.

Effective Backup Solutions

Synology DS214+ offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. PC users can back up their data to Synology DS214+ using Synology Data Replicator software, and Mac OS X® users enjoy native Apple® Time Machine® integration.

A backup wizard is provided for backing up data from DS214+ to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA connection. The wizard also makes it easy to back up DiskStation data to the cloud via Amazon S3™ or Glacier cloud service. In addition, users can back up and restore DiskStation shared folders in multiple versions using Synology Time Backup package.

Shared Folder Sync allows users to synchronize a specific folder from Synology DS214+ to another DiskStation– a server-to-client backup mechanism that takes place whenever something is changed on the server side. Users will be able to share documents within their local office seamlessly and safely with encrypted connection. When your DiskStation is down, you will be able to have an immediate backup running in no time.

Energy Efficient with Cool and Quiet Design

Synology DS214+ is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provide a 92x92 mm fan and the smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, its noise dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of multiple scheduled power on/off and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation cost.

It just works

Pros: it's fast
Many features.
You get 2 camera licenses vs 1 in the previous year Synology boxes.

Cons: pricy but you get constant updates (especially security updates) from Synology. So it's not really a <cons> . You get what you pay for :)

Overall Review: It just works as a backup sinology to another sinology box.
I installed it as RAID 1 and there are no problems

Edit: 3/23/2017
Link Aggregation works fine with a Zyxel 1900GS-8HP switch (first set up the aggregation on the switch, and then on the Synology box)
After 3 years of non-stop usage, the box works without any hitch. I don't think I've ever restarted the box. It restarts only when doing updates from Synology. Rock solid product.

The Synology DS214+ has been a great addition to my small business.

Pros: Purchased 9/25/2014 along with two Seagate NAS HDDs. Over the past 2 years I have used the DS214+ as a file & print server for a small engineering/construction firm. There was definitely a learning curve because I wasn't familiar with file servers, but I was able to configure everything myself and I manage the system with minimal effort. After about a year one of the HDDs failed and DSM alerted me of the problem and was able to save my data. Currently have the DS setup with OpenVPN to access CAD files & documents remotely which is great. Tons of features, most of which I don't take advantage of.

Cons: Configuration is constantly evolving as I take time to figure out "new" features. Lots of help available online which is awesome, but it takes time to find the answers and mess around with the settings.

Synology should survey their existing business users to figure out how people are using their products, how they are not (and why), and provide targeted resources to improve the experience.

Overall Review: Would definitely recommend for small business use.

Great Except the Noise

Pros: For it's first few months, the unit ran perfectly. Good interface, snappy file transfers, and quiet.

Cons: After only 5 months of (not very aggressive) use, the unit has developed a loud "hum" or rattle. Carefully inspecting and touching, poking, etc. the unit has revealed that one of the drive bays rattles. Also, even in a rather cold environment (ambient temp about 66 degrees F), the fans run continuously. The system appears not to turn on and off the fans as needed. Between the (new) noise level and the constantly running fan, I can't recommend this unit if you are placing it somewhere central, like an office or within a media center setup.

Overall Review: I like Synology generally -- this is my second unit. But the problems with the noise indicates poor craftsmanship and design, and possibly cheap parts. Disappointing.

Pros: Easy to setup and is fast, took about 20 to 30 min for a basic install.

Don't need network, IT knowledge, but just the basics.

Has fast file transfer over network (Win 7 PC to the NAS is faster than any other NAS I've used, not even using the aggregation technology, seeing 40 to 100MB speeds).

Works with basic router/switch, U Verse.

Cons: Pricey

Cannot play ISO movie images over network with connected media player. They are seen, but cannot play.

Need to always res-can the connected external USB HD when wanting to stream video to media player over network. Use a different ext USB HD, need to re-scan.

It's RAID 0,1 or Synology's Hybrid Raid only. Maybe JBOD too, not sure.
This means when 2 drives are in it, if one fails, data is toast. Wish I could have just 2 drives independent from each other. I don't think Synology Raid supports that, for sure RAID 0,1, JBOD do not.

Overall Review: I cannot comment on the full capabilities of this NAS.

I wanted a fast transfer of files from PC to the NAS over ethernet and ability to see external USB HD on it, and then from the NAS to other devices (media player) on my network.

For that, it gets nearly top ratings, but there's a hiccup.

This DS214+ does see my external USB HD drives (formatted NTSF) when connected, using a Mediasonic ProBox K32-SU3 enclosure.

The external USB HD's have various types of video media, all can be seen, played on my ethernet network to my media player (KDLINKS 720 player).
However, the ISO files cannot be played, but can be seen. It's not the player, since they play without issue if connecting ext. USB HD enclosure directly to the player.

Always need to scan different ext. USB HD drive to see it's media.
That's not a deal breaker but wish it wasn't so (it's similar to windows 7 media player, lame..).

The issue with that is when connecting other ext. USB HD's with different video files, they would too need to be scanned for their files to be seen by other devices on my network.

It gets worse.

Now, the NAS's "file list" will have the 1st ext USB HD files listed with the 2nd ext USB HD files, as seen by my media player.

Of course, the 1st ext USB HD files can't play, since they are not connected; the NAS box seems to keep them indexed.

Wish I could just connect ext USB HD to the NAS and then it's content be seen on the network (they are just files, don't want to play media from the NAS like the 214play, don't need transcoding; I have media players for that), just want the files to be seen on the network by other devices.

How to avoid this re-scanning of external USB HD issue and also get the ISO video images to play on my media player, if resolved, I'd love this NAS. Help!! If anyone knows how.

When first setting up, if you want RAID 0 or 1, do a custom install, don't click next button. If you do, you'll get Synology Hybrid RAID (which seems to be similar speeds to RAID 1 when I tested transfer speeds).

You can convert RAID versions, but doing so is like reformatting (actually it is), and you'd get stuck installing all file (OS, apps, ALL of it) again.

Huge disappointment

Pros: What it does, it does well. I just wish it was more clear this can't be used as an external HDD and that exFAT is not supported.

Cons: I was hugely disappointed to find out this NAS box has no support to work as an external drive. But much much more disappointed to find out that it doesn't support exFAT. It is due to them not paying Microsoft for the licensing. Is there really no way we can get an paid add-on that will allow this? I can't explain how useless this is to me. I work at a University in research lab where I can get 40gb of data in a day and have to transfer my files on an external SSD between a MAC and PC environment. NTFS transfers on OSX with 3rd party apps make it painfully slow to use a drive as NTFS on OSX. I can't use a HFS formatted drive on the PC where the files are recorded from, so I'm stuck using exFAT. Since exFAT isn't supported by the DS214+, I have to plug the drive into a pc or mac and then transfer over the network (at between 500 kB/s to 8 MB/s). This wouldn't be such a huge problem if I had control over network hardware here. Our department wants $8k to add more gigabit switch ports in our building. I could add a gigabit switch to the computer that is accessing it, but then I run the risk of our networking dept. banning the MAC address since we're not allowed to add switches to the network. Anyways, part of this is the fault of our University network restrictions, but I really wish that the product page was more upfront about the lack of exFAT support and lack of support to be used as a non-NAS hard drive. If you are someone who uses a camera with exFAT memory cards, this is also a huge PITA if you expected to be able to use the USB 3.0 host ports to transfer to the photos from a memory card to the drive. Some of my complaints are definitely on me for not researching enough. But it took me a bit of googling just to find out that it doesn't support use as an external HDD, this should have been in the product description, since many NAS boxes support this feature.

Overall Review: Aside from my issues, I think it is great, I just feel like I fell through the cracks using this with my applications and I feel like I wasted $300 on a product that doesn't fulfill my needs. I also have found an 8 page thread on their forums full of people clamoring for exFAT support. The silence is deafening, no mention of whether they will or will not support exFAT in the future. I doubt they will due to licensing costs, but I wish they would at least address the issue so I know for sure I'm in the dark for the foreseeable future.

Full featured device

Pros: The device was easy to set up and works very well and the software is quite extensive and provides access to many kinds of uses for the device. (I've used about one-third of the software so far.) It works with bare hard drives, which are cheaper, no need for cables. I set it up as a "mirror RAID" so backup is maximized. I like that I can "read" the hard drives outside the unit, if necessary. It runs quietly (you can change the fan settings for more cooling or for more quiet) and has useful and sufficient ports.

Cons: This is an "industrial strength" system (hardware and software) so it can take some time to figure out. You can get it going right out of the box, but the instructions and information are not step-by-step, rather they describe the features but do not explain fully how to use them or why you would want that feature; therefore some experimentation is required, Be prepared to try things out before committing to it. The software is not "best in class", but is more than adequate and does the main things quite well; it just lacks the bells and whistles of better software.

Overall Review: Because there are so many features and software, it pays to read carefully and do some experiments before putting your "real" data in place. You don't want to have to redo large amounts of work when you figure out that you set up something a less than optimal way.
