How is the wiring on this? I had a Belkin and Cool master and both failed due to cheap wiring losing their connections. Also does the USB port stick out far? That was my 2nd gripe about the Cool master. The usb plug in stuck out about 2" on that model.

The wiring is decent.  I've had this product for about a year and nothing has degraded.  However, the fan spins at a relatively low speed so if your laptop over heats a lot, then I would suggest a different product.  This fan is good for lower spec machines but if you need performance, try a better fan, or maybe make your own.  Also, the USB plug will stick out unfortunately, but the USB port is found further near the back of the cooling pad, as to keep out of the way.

How long is the USB cable that is supplied? I take that 1 of the 2 USB ports is used to power the cooler?

about 1 foot.  I for the most part do not use the fan.  It is great to have when the laptop is really getting warm but the metal design does a great job dissipating the normal heat generated by daily tasks.  I love this product and as a result have tossed my prior pads.

Is the airflow from the fan downward, toward your lap, or upward, toward the bottom of the laptop?

the stronger airflow is upward (hitting the bottom of the laptop).  There is a very slight breeze coming from the bottom of the cooler.  I can say, this device worked well for my wife's laptop, which was notorious for overheating.  After immediately plugging it in, her laptop's core temp dropped approximately 15 degrees!

Do I have to purchase it seperately  if so I would like to purchase one

I'm pretty sure mine came with one. Just so you know, I thought mine worked pretty well but it became noisy pretty quickly so I stopped using it. Best of luck with yours. Hope it works out

The USB port is flush to the rear left corner. It includes a cable to connect to your laptop and hangs cable off the left to your port.

I have an HP Pavilion TouchSmart 15 that sits flush on top of the cooler, and the cable hangs off to the left. Not a major nuisance, but something to be aware of when you move it off your lap or something. On a table, may be not such an issue.

The fan is large and fairly quiet, rattles sometimes when it starts up, but quiets right down. But, it has a three year warranty, so if it fails I feel protected some.

I own a MSI GX-70 Laptop, and it measures out to be 16.85" wide at the base. And if this is reading right, it says that the heatsink is ~15"

So it saying it can support a 17" laptop really not true? I'm looking for a cooler that will be snug with the feet of the laptop and not have it overhang because the GX laptop has a center vent for cooling and I'm looking for a cooler that has a center mounted fan as well, and having the feet of the laptop hanging over the edge will not bide well for cooling.

You want to have part of the unit exposed and inch of so for air for air exchange. I have HP DV7 with two hard drives, blu ray player and 7 external 3TB drives. I suggest using Speed Fan to test temperatures. It is FREE and good untility and will let you read the other temps in the SMART array. ALSO, HSWin64 is another good free ulitlity. In Speed Fan you can adjust the CPU fan and Video Fan Speeds to cool the unit. This cooler is one of the best on the market. ONLY make sure it is running as light will come on when plugged in BUT there is a button by the usb array plug in AND do NOT use any of the USB plugs in it as powering units off of USB 2 is risky and in most cases will not work AND if you are running wireless mouse the RI will not see the mouse very well.
