The Define XL R2 is in a sleek and stylish Scandinavian form, capable of providing superb cooling and ventilation capabilities with exceptional expandability. Equipped with Fractal Design’s innovative ModuVent feature, this chassis has an updated internal layout that offers greater expandability, modularity and flexibility, including capacity for 9 PCI cards and two HDD cages that can be repositioned to provide more space for water cooling radiators.

  • newegg Silent case with high density To achieve a high level of noise reduction, material with mass should be incorporated which is what Fractal Design strives to achieve with the dense bitumen used on the side panels.
  • newegg ModuVent design The unique ModuVent design allows the user to choose between optimal silence or maximum airflow. If cooling becomes more of a priority than noise reduction, the ModuVent panels can be removed to expose additional air vents for optional fans.
  • newegg Cable Management You can route the cables through the thick rubber grommets and keep them tucked away in the 26 mm routing space behind motherboard plate.
  • newegg Flexible ventilation options Up to 7 fans can be installed (2 x 120/140 mm - front, 2 x 120/140mm - top, 1 x 140mm - back, 1 x 140 mm - side panel, and 1 x140 mm - bottom ), with three silent series R2 140mm Hydraulic bearing fans pre-installed. And a fan controller is strategically integrated in the front panel and supports up to 3 fans. The water tube holes are provided at the rear for easy water cooling setup and maintenance.
  • newegg Removable HDD cages Top HDD cage can be removed or repositioned for increased airflow whereas bottom HDD cage can be repositioned further into the case to allow for front radiator mount.
  • newegg USB 3.0 Connectivity 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0 and 2x audio ports on top panel allow handy connection to peripherals.

Quiet and roomy! 12/4/2019 8:07:07 PM

Pros: - Lots of room
- Good cable management
- Quiet stock fans

Cons: - Not enough to dock an egg, but if you're filling up the 3.5" cages with HDDs, you're not going to have a good spot to mount an SSD. I can't find any mounting point on the back of the mobo mount.

Overall Review: I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a nice looking server case.

Fractal Design Define XL R2 Black Silent EATX Full Tower Case 4/23/2019 3:05:05 PM

Pros: Good Looking Case Without All The b% that most all other cases have now days (No Glass ,rgb vomit, ext ! It Is Huge..I Needed a big case for my supermicro dual xeon FreeNas Build an i have room for my supermicro X8DTH-6F with a Pair of coolermaster hyper 212 Evo's with plenty of room for the side pannell ! I Dont use the built in fan controler i just zip tied it up n out of the way
an i moved the botom 140mm fan to the front with the other for air intake an to cool the 8- 3.5' hdd im going to add 1 more 140mm fractal fan n the botom again for best cooling imho.but again this is for a dual 6 core xeon supermicro motherbord with a gtx titan,an a dual sfp+ dual10Gb nic an its a 24/7 use

Cons: My 1an only Gripe is that it is advertised as a E-ATX / Xl-ATX How ever It IS NOT The Bord Fits Yea But Thair is 2 standoffs that is not thair so i had to drill 2 holes for all the stand offs to work right but unless ure going to use a supermicro XL-ATX Mother bord then ure good to go !

Overall Review: This Is A Great Case Its Huge With Plenty Of Room For Dual cpu server bords and/or a gaming bord i like the 4 -5.25 bays, I wanted my Blueray Drive To Have A Place To Live & I can add a 4-5 more 3.5 hdds to the front ,this is mostly a steal case with minamal plastic n it just looks cool..lol. I Dont Know about the Front Audio ports,As I Dont Need or want them either i just needed a big E-ATX /XL-ATX Case with Lots of 3.5Hdd Bays an this Fit The Bill Perfectly.. Very happy with the build and it is quit
even with all fans runing @ 100% 24/7 i Thnk i got 3 140mm Fans & 3 120mm Fans 2 n front,one in the back(140mm) and the 2
120mm fans on the hyper 212 evo's an a third 120mm fan in the botom (Temp) Untill my 140mm gets here an it sets 3-4 feet from me an i cant hear it.. An The Price is Not To Bad Either..of corse it could b beter but realy for what this cae is 140$ is not bad IMHO Hope This Helps Some One !

Defective fan controller prevented powering up 4/16/2019 9:59:43 AM

Pros: It has a lot of room.

Cons: Sloppy soldering on the fan controller switch bridged pins on the connector. May have been other issues with it also.

Overall Review: After assembling all of the parts in the case in a fully new build, the machine would not power up. The CPU fan would twitch, and the power supply (a new Seasonic FOCUS series SSR-450FM 450W 80 +) would click and shut down. A couple of old PS testers I have indicated it was bad. I did not know if there were possible motherboard issues. I ordered new power supply and a new PS tester. The new tester indicated the Seasonic was bad, and the new Corsair PS was good. Newegg was ready to accept a return when I tested the Seasonic one last time after removing it from the case. It tested good. Inspecting the fan controller after removing it from the case revealed very sloppy soldering. At least one pair of connector pins were bridged with solder on the back side. I confirmed this with a multimeter.

With the fan controller disconnected the new system will boot. I have not yet completed the build. I do not think anything was damaged by the short, but I will wait and see how things work when the system is complete.

I have completed a service ticket at Fractal Design, and included photos.

I will report back after completing the build.

goods and bads 3/23/2019 4:06:47 AM

Pros: -silent, well if you due a power plane for fans that lowers RPMs with the motherboard.
-extra covers for fans not installed
-material to help dampen sound pre installed.
-full front door to help direct sound.
-front panel cords inside route nicely without being in direct confirmation with upper 5.25" drive bay with cd/dvd/blue ray drive is installed.
-washers for mounting HDDs to drive cages.

Cons: -the 8 HDD space i dislike, most air goes around HDDs installed vs air going over them.
-bottom dust cover for PSU, needs to be removed from the back.
-no hdd LED on front
-no dust cover over front ports.
-front ports allow dust to float right down into plugs.
-cable management between psu and motherboard could be better / more.
-no extra spots to stash SSD around inside the case
-the 2 HDD drive cages are metal to metal contact no rubber/cushion between.
-SSD 2.5" mounts inside the 3.5" drive bay cages = a joke, SSD are out of the air flow for fan blowing air over SSDs.
-back of case, could have provided 1 to 2 extra rear bracket slots for expansion cards with a cable kit.
-PSU cords resulted in removal of 140mm extra fan in bottom for a 120mm fan.
-no rubber washers for 5.25" drive bays.
-they remove nearly all LED lighting but the stupid power light on front, is so bright it is blinding. permanent marker went to led, with some tape to reduce glare from LED.

Overall Review: -if not for silent operation, and the 3.5", and 5.25" bays i needed. i would of looked else were.
-i give a 3 because it is "basic average case out there" not less, and not more. beyond helping with noise.

Solid and quiet 3/7/2019 9:07:08 AM

Pros: Rugged steel design with no sharp edges.
Plenty of room.
Lots of sound dampening material and rubber vibration isolators.
Slide-in drive trays.
Easily cleaned air filters.
Lots of extra knurled thumbscrews.

Cons: No drive activity LED. This is important during difficult OS installation.
Very heavy.
All 3 included fans are 3-wire: speed control by motherboard not possible, although there is a 3-position fan voltage control inside the front door.
Front panel and air grill are plastic.
Manual is almost worthless; doesn't include things like where ATX standoffs should be placed and many other assembly details.

Overall Review: This is an attractive case without flashy doodads. The manual badly needs improvement and the case really needs a drive activity LED. For a newbie, the poor manual will make assembly a challenge.
If you can accept the deficiencies I've noted, it's an excellent case.

The Best Case for a CAD/3D design build!! 3/4/2019 7:25:40 AM

Pros: - Nearly Silent even under moderate use.
- Excellent interior design, Makes the build process easy.
- Al black with ZERO RGB, very professional looking! I can't believe how difficult it is to find a clean black box these days.

Cons: - CHECK VIDEO CARD CLEARANCE. I used a 2080ti FTW3 and it was close!

Solid design, but not quite perfect 3/3/2019 3:05:30 PM

Pros: Quiet as I needed it to be
Nice door to give it a sleek look
The connections on the top are pretty convenient

Cons: The Supermicro X10DAX board only connects with 6 screws. I thought it should be compatible, but it wasn't quite. Still, it holds the board well enough.
The size and position of the power button is pretty awful. My cat learned to step on it to shut my whole friggin' computer off.. And she definitely likes to do that to get my attention, hoping to be fed early. I had to tape a card over it.
