Good external hard drive with some drawbacks.

Pros: + Compact form factor with a slimmer design than that of the competition

+ USB 3.0 with speeds up to 135MB/s, with a minimum of 60MB/s

+ Security software allows password protecting the hard drive and enabling drive encryption

+ Extremely quiet when in use

+ 2 year warranty

Cons: - Lack of rubber feet on the bottom of the drive to keep it in place when in use

- Plastic enclosure will make the hard drive run in the mid 40 degree Celsius range under load

- Glossy exterior which will scuff very easily

Overall Review: Toshiba has currently has 3 main product lines for the external hard drives (Standard, Advanced, and Pro), with this one being positioned in-between. For those considering which drive to purchase, the more basic (Standard) model comes with a 1 year warranty instead of 2 year. Also it does not allow use of Toshiba’s password protection and backup programs.

The Pro model, retains all of the features of the Advanced series, but gains a 3 year warranty and an aluminum enclosure for better heat dissipation, and is compatible with USB Type-C connectors.

Just another drive in this segment

Pros: - 18" USB cable
18" should be just about long enough to reach from the back of a tower case to the top of it. And it's just short enough if you want to bundle it up with a simple wire-tie.

- Usable backup software
The backup software is pretty much straight forward and basic. It allows you to create one scheduled backup of any/all folders on your system. If you're computer is powered off during a scheduled backup, the software will alert you next time you turn on your computer

- Nearly as light as an external SSD
- Non-intrusive blue LED power/activity light
- Runs cool
- 2 year warranty

Cons: - Top of unit is a glossy fingerprint magnet
- Backup software is minimal at best. Creating on-demand and scheduled backups is easy enough, but there's no user manual for the complete novices. "Would you grandparents be able to figure it out? Probably not. Your 14yr old computer geek? Probably."

Overall Review: I've been using this drive for about a month now. There's nothing that really sets this drive apart from the competition in this segment. The internal drive is a Toshiba MQ04UBB200, which is a basic 5400RPM drive. And that's fine. You wouldn't likely get a whole lot more performance from a faster drive on the USB3 bus, but you would get a lot more heat, which is generally considered "bad".

The 2yr warranty seems about average for this market segment.

The backup software is, as noted, usable but exceptionally basic. You can only schedule one type of backup based on frequency: Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Monthly.
There's no option for encryption, but that's not really critical at this price point.
Based on my testing, it looks like the software does differential backups, so you don't need to worry about each backup size ballooning up. There isn't any way to add notes to your backup, so if you are looking for a particular version of a file, your only restore options are by date. After that, you are at least given the option to choose a different restore folder, so if you want to compare contents, you can. If you choose to restore to the same folder where content already exists, it will prompt you with the the option to "overwrite the existing file" or "skip it". It does create a fairly basic text file of it's operations, so if you were so inclined to dig a little deeper, you can. But again..."Very basic" are the keywords with this software.
The software backs up the data to a proprietary file format, so there's no way to access the data in the backups without the software. Depending on your sense of security, that may or may not be a good thing. Realistically though, if you are that concerned with the backup/restore functionality, you probably already have a dedicated backup software solution.

For me, this drive will simply be used as additional offline storage for non-critical data- much like my CD-RWs that have been collecting dust for the past 15 years.

4 eggs for this unit. It does what it says with the smallest pinch extra. But nothing to make it really stand out in a crowded space.

Price Stands Out

Pros: + Great Small Mechanical Drive Speed - Obviously not in the realm of SSD's but I get a respectable average of 102MB/s when reading from the drive and 74MB/s when writing. These numbers were averaged from transferring 100GB of a combination of data (large and small files) to and from the drive.

+ Price - When searching for 2TB USB 3.0 drives on Newegg there is only one series less expensive than this, which is the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB (currently $2 less than this Toshiba model).

+ Quiet - Nearly silent under all conditions.

+ Simple - No external power, plug and play, easy to understand software.

+ Decent Warranty - Personally I'd spend a bit more for the Premium for the 3yr warranty, but 2yrs isn't terrible. Just avoid the Basic model and its 1yr warranty.

Cons: - Mediocre Software - Not a lot of features here, which is probably fine for most folks. But if you intend to create complex backup schedules, create cloud redundancies, or much of anything else beyond just identifying folders you'd like to backup then you're probably better off using third party software.

- No Protective Case - I don't need a portable HDD at home so whenever I'm using one it's while I'm traveling. A carrying case is a must for this. They protect the drive and provide a place to store the cable. Not including a case is unfortunately fairly standard in the industry, even for premium models, but it's worth mentioning.

Overall Review: If you're considering an external Toshiba drive the main consideration will probably be the warranty. Their 'Basic' line of drives come with a 1yr warranty. The 'Advance' series features 2yrs. Premium will give you 3yrs. The current cheapest Basic 2TB on Newegg is $66.09, the cheapest Advance is $66.18. In this comparison it's a no-brainer. The Basic models also don't feature free software.

The real stand-out point about these Toshiba drives is their price. Undercuts most of the competition by at least $10 at 2TB capacity. You get respectable performance and storage capacity for a bargain.

My Go-To External Drive

Pros: - Very Affordable
- Portable
- Works

Cons: - Nowhere to store the USB Cable

Overall Review: Toshiba makes great general use external drives. They're not super flashy, super fast, nor do they have a lot of personality, but that's exactly why I like them. They're 100% utilitarian, stylish enough to be professional, and they're very affordable. I've been able to play games, open files and watch videos on these with little to no issue as long as the video isn't extremely large, like 4k resolution. Even then the video can be played, but if you jump around a lot it may take some time to move between scenes. Personally, I find this to be a perfectly acceptable trade-off to be able to move my media easily between pc's and rooms.

Nice, small, and quiet

Pros: This drive is very quiet
The activity led is not overly bright
Stayed relatively cool even under heavy use
No unnecessary bloat on drive out of the box – plug and play
Read and write speeds on par with any other external usb 3.0 drive (110+ MB/s)
Fits neatly in a jeans pocket
2 year limited warranty

Cons: “Included” backup software took 10 minutes to download (I have 60/5 service)…. Package size was 9 MB! I’m all for not having anything on the drive out of the box, but perhaps this 9 MB file should have been on the drive.
Windows 10 defender smartscreen then flagged the software as potentially malicious, so I didn’t test the backup software that was advertised with the drive. Windows does a decent enough job of this anyway (using the windows 7 backup and restore anyway).

Overall Review: This is a personal preference, but I really dislike glossy plastic on anything. The top of the drive is exactly that, while the rest of the enclosure is matte. Glossy only looks great for the 30 seconds after it gets taken out of the box, afterwards all it is is dust and fingerprints.

A good looking and performing USB3 drive

Pros: The Toshiba Canvio Advance 2 Gig external USB3 drive came in an unpretentious red and white box. Inside the drive was securely held in place by a plastic tray. Included was the drive, the 52 incch long USB3 cable, a California Prop 65 chemical warning and a 1 page quick start guide in several languages. That’s it.
This particular Canvio was black, both the unit and the cable. It’s matte black with a piano black top that manages to show every fingerprint. The indicator light is a small blue ring that isn’t obnoxious. All in all it’s so so looking but then these things aren’t bought for their looks. Inside the case is a 5400 RPM dual 1 TB disk drive. It comes formatted to NTFS and formats out to 1.81 Gigs
I’ve got a ton of these external drives around, going back 3 or 4 years. Most of them are Seagate with 1 Western Digital. They all work the same, quietly and unobtrusively. The Toshiba was faster than all of them in Crystal Disk Mark but that might be because it’s new and has no data on it. Just using the first line of Crystal Disk Mark, the Toshiba gave me 146 MB\s in read and 151.7 MB/s in write. Using Tera Copy I copied 3.37 gigs of mixed files in 1 minute and 13.6 of videos in 1.49 minutes. Strangely enough I have and older Seagate Plus 2TB USB3 drive that copied the same 3.37 Gig folders in 44 seconds even though it had a lower Crystal Disk Mark score.
There is a link on the drive to download backup and security programs. It works seamlessly although I didn’t try either one since I didn’t need them. There is also a PDF of the 2 year warranty and a PDF of the Declaration of conformity.
These drives seem to get cheaper every day and the Toshiba Canvio Advance is one of the least expensive. In performance they all are basically the same. They’re convenient and rugged enough to toss into a backpack.

Cons: Not much I can think of. I guess if pressed I'd like a longer cable.

Overall Review: These little USB3 drives are like a utility now. Pick your manufacturer if you have a favorite or go for the lowest price. Or go for the color you like. These things seem to work and work as you slowly fill them up. The Toshibo Canvio Advance 2TB drive is one of the less expensive and the performance is very good. It comes in loads of colors so to me this drive is definitely a thumbs up.
