Pros: - Works for the vanilla use case and not much else
Cons:
- Earlier versions of firmware provided greater control over security and port forwarding/NAT
- Later versions neutered the thing, presumably in the name of simplicity
- NAT port forward appears to be broken. I was trying to forward JetDirect TCP 9100 through and it wouldn't work. I contacted support and was told the Internet port **REQUIRED** a public IP address in order for port forwarding to function. That is ridiculous.
Overall Review: There are far less costly options with far superior firmware. TP Link let some seriously n00b like firmware dev make it through their QA process.
Pros: Runs everything in the house, our normal usage in a evening... smart TV running Netflix, 1 iphone, 1 ipad Air usually running Netflix, gaming computer usually play 7 Days to Die, Xbox one (upstairs)
Cons: occasionally I will find an antenna is loose, but never seems to effect performance
Overall Review: We never have a hiccup with this. If you are having troubles with your home network make sure you consider you modem as well.
Pros:
-Speed (2167Mbps is as fast as it gets)
-ease of use
-strong signal
Cons: -V1 vs V2? Just get V2...
Overall Review: Excellent router with great software to back it up. This is as fast as any router in the $300 range for half the price. No brainer if you don't plan on having 10 people try to play a 4k game wirelessly at the same time... but 2 or 3? No problem. IMHO, this will handle anything that the foreseeable 4k future has in store.
Pros:
- Has all the features I was looking for
- Great performance when working
Cons: - After the router is finally setup and tested to work, it starts erratic behavior within 1-2 days.
Overall Review:
- I have the feeling the problems start after a certain timeframe of usage - almost as if usage itself is causing problems.
- Need to return this product. It has been the worst buy I had in years.
Pros:
- Easy setup
- External ports & controls clearly labeled
- MU-MIMO w/4 antennae for enhanced WiFi connectivity and speed
- Integrated AV and Security software from Trend Micro, it's almost like having a UTM for a fraction of the price.
- Significantly faster and much more reliable than the third-rate WiFi router provided by the ISP.
- Two LAN ports can be bonded via LACP, if needed
- Nicely implemented web-GUI setup page
- Slim and attractive exterior design
- Very attractively priced for this level of performance and features
Cons:
- Some GUI options don't change appropriately as over-arching options change. Ex: If you change the MAC Filtering from a "Blacklist" scheme to "Whitelist," the option for each individual connected MAC ID should also change from "Blocked" to "Permitted," but they do not. There are a couple of other similar menu issues.
- Unit utilizes an external PSU (power adapter,) which is quite common for residential network hardware, but still an undesirable feature.
- The first firmware update appeared to complete, but at 100% the unit froze ad infinitum and had to be powercycled to restore any response. Fortunately, the update was successful and it resumed working normally, but what a nail-biter.
Overall Review:
Before you do ANY configuration to this router, update the firmware!
Update. The. Firmware.
Once you update the firmware, ALL of the default settings are restored, so anything that you've already changed gets reset to square 1 and you've entirely wasted any configuration time to that point.
Firmware. Update. First!
Regarding that update, I would also recommend downloading and copying the firmware .BIN file to a flash drive and connecting it to the router's USB port, then pointing the GUI update utility there. I allowed mine to update via the Web and at 100%, it froze and just sat there, with an admonishing warning NOT to interrupt power during the update process. After 40 minutes at 100%, however, it became quite obvious there was no more progress to be had, so I switched the router off and back on (it actually has a power switch,) and the device resumed normal operation again, updates and all. PHEW!
Once past that hurdle, getting the router setup was pretty easy, all things considered. I did have to finagle my ISP-supplied modem/WiFi router to act as only a modem (for which it was not designed,) which required a bit of trickery (thanks for nothing, AT&T) and simply pass all the inbound/outbound packets to and from this new TP-Link router, but once accomplished, everything has been golden. You will likely not experience this issue unless the hardware supplied by your ISP is not designed to be used solely as a cable or DSL modem, but even if so, like my device, there are almost always workarounds you can implement. Ohhhh, Google!
The old AT&T Motorola WiFi had been dropping all the clients about one or two times every week, requiring a full powercycle of the device and a good 10+ minutes for broadband service to resume and a few more minutes for all the WiFi devices to reconnect, but since adding this new router into the mix, that issue has disappeared entirely. Plus, all the WiFi clients now connect at much higher speeds than previously (400-800Gbps now vs. 200-350Gbps before.) AT&T had already replaced their unit once before, which worked acceptably for awhile, but once it started demonstrating issues again, I simply took matters into my own hands, and I couldn't be much happier with the results.
I've had little regret about purchasing this new WiFi router so far, and aside from the few small rough-edges listed in the Cons above, it's been a very pleasant experience. The integrated antivirus and intrusion-prevention software is a great addition to individual client-based protection, and it's included with the purchase! I can only hope TP-Link nor Trend Micro ever tries to start charging for the protection software updates, but no sign of that thus far. The only true downside I've experienced is I wish I had done this sooner.
Pros:
Looks classy, subdued LED lights (do not blink with activity) and classy black silver exterior are well suited for wall mounting. This replaced a "new" router provided by FiOS ISP and far exceeded our expectations. This TP-Link router is mounted in the center of our home on the second floor and I have full coverage WiFi thru the entire 3000' home.
This was purchased so we could eliminate the dead spots and weak WiFi signals we were getting from the FiOS supplied routers. Also - we moved from "cable" TV to our own local HD over the air content, and streaming on HULU and Netflix. This is saving us a TON of cash, especially since we were not watching 90% of the cable channels they were trying to "push" to us.
If you are thinking about "unplugging" your cable TV, this is the router to get, and will pay for itself in a few months of dumping all those useless channels.
Cons:
None - so using for "features" review:
Gigabit ports for WAN and LAN work with our new TP-Link 24port switch and also the FiOS ONT on the side of our house. Thru put speed is impressive!
MU-MIMO that works! Concurrent streaming to several WiFi connected devices without buffering issues.
Smart WiFi - TP-Link has the bugs worked out - their "smart WiFi" works better than any other I have tried so far.Wireless signal strength improved markedly - AC range is about 35 to 40 feet, N ranges is well over 150 feet.
GUI / Web is intuitive, simple to understand and there are good "help" files online.
Smartphone APP is as good as it gets, both for Apple and Android devices, it really makes it nice to be able to turn on / off the guest network remotely.
Overall Review:
To dump cable / FiOS TV and those annoying set top box issues with provider supplied hardware:
1. Make sure you have an ethernet port and CAT5e running from the ONT (the proider box) to your router location. This will remove the need for a MoCA "bridge" device that will translate MOCA or other RG cable connection to your router.
2. Purchase a good router (like this one), connect the CAT5 cable from the ONT to the WAN port on the router, reboot the router and then set your WiFi Passwords (don't leave them defaulted) and enjoy.
3. Sign up for HULU, use Roku or similar streaming device, and Netflix to watch your favorite shows, both past and present and pay a significantly reduced bill to your internet provider.
I highly recommend this WiFi router to anyone that is needing a good improvement over their provider's supplied junk... It ROCKS!
Parts used:
Wiegand HD patch panel antenna (from HomeDepot).
TP-Link 24port unmanaged switch
TP-Link Archer AC-3150 Router (this one).
Savings - over $150 per month. Expect to have this equipment pay for itself in less than 2 months of use.
Feel free to contact me for additional information.
Pros: Easy to set up.
Cons:
Was hoping for explanation of options like my older TP-Link router I'm replacing, but none exist.
5 GHz band would not allow me to change SSID or password, giving error code 9805: corresponding case not found with latest firmware. Tech support could not resolve the issue and suggested I return it.
Overall Review: I loved my previous TP-Link router and was disappointed this didn't work as well out of the box. My Asus PCE-AC88 wireless adapter is connecting at just under 300 Mbps according to Windows.

Pros: The c3150 performs well BUT
Cons: The web interface is also a pain, the way its laid out I found it hard to find what i was looking for compared to the old router. Too many colors and the text for selecting what you need to change settings on is a medium gray on a white background makes it hard to read. Actually they use different colors throughout for the text, why? Stick to black text white background cause there are no awards for pretty pages.
It will NOT recognize my (wireless only) (dhcp only) security cameras which was another reason to replace the old router.
I ran a trace on communication and the TP never posted a DHCP request from the cameras. Just like they did not exist. TP's support is a joke and the joke is on the purchaser.
Overall Review: So if you have wireless only security cams they might not work with this TP purchase. Its been a pain in my A__
