Pros: - Fast shipping by newegg. The two cameras set arrived well packaged and undamaged. - Each camera is in an individual well insulated box that includes a mini-CD with software, user guide/installation booklet, drilling template, screws and materials relating to TrendNet mobile app and a list of TrendNet equipment that is able to provide POE for the cameras. - Software provides granular control over camera. Examples: Privacy mask can be drawn over part of the stream, motion detection/tracking can be set for parts of the video stream. - Cameras are high quality. - IR illumination works well. - Housing is sturdy. - Cable connectors are suitable for outdoor use. The cameras come with plastic couplings that can be installed over Ethernet cable jack to protect the connectors from the elements. However, this will only work if you are making your own Ethernet connectors, as the Ethernet cable connector will not fit through coupler. - IR illuminators glow red. Studies show cameras might have deterring effect on crime. - Max resolution is 1280x720.
Cons: - Cameras have one female port for Ethernet and one female port for power injector. - The power injector cable cannot be separated from the camera. However, it has a rubber cap to protect from elements. - No power supply nor Ethernet injectors are supplied with these cameras.
Overall Review: - The two cameras replaced existing low-resolution cameras that I have purchased a few years ago. - To provide power (POE) to the cameras I have used Trendent TPE-S44 unmanaged switch. - I installed one camera on my house’s soffit, under roof on 2nd floor. This camera captures front of the house, which includes front porch and a driveway. The porch and front door are approximately 20 feet away. I installed the second camera in my garage where it captures the garage and a driveway (if the garage door is up). - The width of coverage is sufficient for my needs. - At night, my front porch and driveway are normally unlit. I can turn on my front porch LED lights when needed. The camera has no trouble capturing reasonably good images of dark, unlit porch from 20 feet away. The IR illumination works well for my needs. Occasionally, when the front porch light comes on, the camera quickly adjusts itself to new lighting conditions. - Software setup could be frustrating. The software forces you to change password on first use. To avoid getting frustrated, only use lower letter characters and numbers at this stage (If you use capital letters or special characters the password change operation will fail with no explanation). Once the setup finishes and you are in main software page, you can then change your password again to anything you want, including caps and special characters. - Make sure to update camera’s firmware if newer version is available. Ensure you change camera’s time. You have the option to do it manually or take time off your computer or internet time keepers. - Your have to run separate setup for each camera. There is no way to automatically apply the same settings to both cameras. - The software offers very granular controls over your camera. - Trendnet offers remote viewing app (TRENDnetVIEW) for your mobile device. The basic version is free and allows you to view your camera feeds. However, you have to be on your house’s Wi-Fi. The app won’t work outside your home Wi-Fi or over cellular connection. A paid version costs a few bucks and allows recording of the video on your mobile device. - Generally, I am happy with these cameras. They offer a very nice upgrade over my last set.
