Do I need to have a Ubiquity gateway to use this? I will be upgrading everything to Ubiquity in the future, but need a modem now

No, you do not need a Ubiquiti gateway to get started with the UCI. I'm in the same boat - needed a new DOCSIS 3.1 modem, but future-planning a Unifi system. Bought the UCI because it was compatible with Xfinity. You'll play the standard games with Xfinity to set it up (the necessary CMMAC address will be displayed on the LCD). That being said, the UCI will then be operating in an "unmanaged" mode. With a Unifi Cloud Gateway, I believe you'll be able to see more detailed statistics, manage networks, and access settings. I plan on buying a Dream Machine of some sort eventually, for this purpose.
