Good performance in a small package 1/21/2020 10:11:03 AM

Pros: Small, sturdy and light
Decent light gaming performance

Cons: Short, non standard power cable

Overall Review: Would recommend as a commuter/school laptop that I would buy again in a heartbeat
Short power cable is my only gripe, but that's likely designed to be a feature of it's portability

Sturdy frame; light weight; Great mix of essential components 1/14/2020 11:17:17 AM

Pros: Nice and easy SSD
Quick boot-up
Good connectivity (there is faster USB available but you have all essential profiles here)
Disk space good... I divided into three partitions: Win10 system, DATA space, LINUX Mint system
Backlit keyboard, easy touch
Touchpad is very effective and responsive
Headjack and Bluetooth

Cons: If you need 10key you'll need a separate plugin or buy the "Zenbook Pro" with the touchpad screen feature. If you need the fastest USB... upgrade to the "Pro".
Not important for me... but no touch screen... some people may use that?
The "home" and "end" keys are important to me and I would have liked if ASUS had a defined key spot or a different location then in the middle f9 and f10 keys... this is the only reason I did not give a 5 out of 5. To fix the problem I painted a unique colour dot on each.

Overall Review: I bought is model because of the cost/performance/feature mix which meet my essentials. I specifically wanted a smaller screen because of travel (eg table tray on plane); I wanted SSD for quicker performance, greater reliability and saving battery power. I felt the faster CPU performance (like I9 or AMD) would be lost on me when using a laptop. The 8th gen I7 has more then enough get-up to run Office Suite, Abobe and basic internet. The connectivity (USB port/Card/headphone jack/bluetooth) was important but again a compromise... the newer USB is definitely faster but completely unimportant for me on a laptop... I use VNC/VPN/Cloud for file transfer. Finally, I LOVE the backlit keyboard.

Small, Lightweight, and Powerful! 1/12/2020 9:45:09 AM

Pros: I decided my wife would be the best one to put the Zenbook though it's paces because it fit her lifestyle so well. She needs portability and power, primarily for photo editing, but also for sharing her work and other daily activities related to her hobbies as well as our daughters school.

The photo editing software suites used are Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop, both run flawlessly and perform really well, as you would expect from this hardware. She never experienced any slowdowns or issues while working with large or multiple photos at once. So much so that since she has started using it, she has not had to move anything to her desktop due to issues with the laptops performance.

It multitasks really well, running multiple applications at the same time, such as streaming Nexflix/Hulu or listening to music in the background with Spotify while working. Overall, it's a really responsive and snappy system.

The features that stand out most to my wife were the units light weight, fingerprint scanner, sound and screen quality, and the Bluetooth connectivity.

She said the fingerprint scanner worked great each time she used it, and it was not easily fooled like some others I have seen. The screen is easy to see outside and the sound quality is surprisingly good for TV and music. Alexa and Cortana also work well with the speakers and built in mic. The Bluetooth connectivity came in really handy for moving photos between her Galaxy Note 10 and the Zenbook, mainly using the "Your Phone" app.

While this is not a "gaming" laptop by any means, we gave it to our daughter to mess around with and let her try some of the games she likes to play. She loaded up titles Mincecraft, Terraria, and Roblox and they all ran perfectly. We also messed with games like Stardew Valley, Farm Together, Torchlight 2, and a few other low demand simple RPG style games and it handed all of them wonderfully. So taking a break from your work for a light gaming session is definitely possible.

Battery life is good with this device too, after being used to play a couple games for about 3-4 hours, and just "browsing" for a few more, it still had about 1/4 of it's charge let when they got home and plugged it back in.

Overall, it's very well built. It feels sturdy and strong, little to no flex.

Cons: The only real complaint she had was with the keyboard and it's backlight, While it does work, the keys can still be hard to see in some bright lighting conditions. The silver keys with the clear lettering does not stand out very well, and the backlight is not bright enough to really help, especially when viewed at an angle. While this is not a huge deal, there is room for improvement in later models of the device.

Overall Review: Overall, this Zenbook has definitely impressed both of us over the past couple weeks. My wife has fell in love with it and has recommended it to family and friends. It has almost everything she needs and wants in a laptop, and we're really pleased with it's performance. It's fast, responsive, and impressive for such a lightweight device. Of all the mobile computing devices she has used over the past several years, this is the one she has been most pleased with.

If you're looking for a lightweight, yet powerful mobile computing solution for work, school, or some light playtime, then you should definitely be looking at the Asus Zenbook!

ZenBook: powerful and portable 1/5/2020 11:00:39 AM

Pros: Hardware: This computer boasts some very impressive hardware for its size. Everything I could possibly want in a modern laptop: i7 processor, 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD, NVIDIA graphics card, latest Bluetooth and Wifi protocols. This laptop also has a fingerprint sensor which was easy to setup in Windows and a modern convenience we are used to from smartphones. The screen of the computer lifts the laptop off of the table to create ventilation and provide an angled typing surface which I think is a really nice touch. Very happy to see that this model has a standard HDMI port and hasn’t opted for USB-C only or mini displayport.

Software: This laptop automatically installed a BIOS firmware update that had been released since the laptop was boxed up. Preinstalled software outside of windows 10: Asus Hello. It's software bundled with Dropbox. You get 25gb free online storage for 1 year. It also comes with ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys- software to customize how the F1-F12 (function keys) work by default. There are also a bunch of Asus update, optimization, etc services that run in the background. You can find the manuals for the laptop under the C:\eSupport path in Windows.

Trackpad: Overall, very nice. Smooth touch. Large surface to utilize. Two finger scrolling is pretty easy. It has the two finger right click. Three fingers invokes Cortana. Four fingers opens the side panel settings. A little more clunky than a Macbook but I believe Macbooks to have (had?) the best trackpads on the market.

Keyboard: Key spacing is very comfortable. Backlit keyboard has 3 levels of brightness. The key faces shine kind of an orange color with the surrounding key a bluish hue.

Screen: This is a fairly small screen. It helps make this laptop extremely light and portable, but at the expense of being too small for major productivity. I would definitely get an external monitor if I were trying to use multiple programs and documents at once. Windows is set to 150% display size by default which seems way too large to get anything done. I’d run this at 100% but 125% is easier on the eyes.

Speakers: The speakers sound really good. They have a surprisingly good sounding bass for a laptop.

Cons: Overall this laptop is really good, here are some nitpicks. I personally own a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop and I use a 2016 Macbook Pro daily for work as a software engineer. Those two laptops are what I have in mind when considering the features and performance of this laptop.

Keyboard: The keyboard leaves a bit to be desired in terms of clicky-ness. It feels a bit mushy and the keys bottom out without much feedback. Very few laptops have great keyboards and this is pretty middle of the road in my opinion.

Speakers: With the volume maxed out at 100% the laptop registered around 56 decibels from a smartphone app which was rated at ‘conversation’ level. So, these aren’t super loud speakers.

Overall Review: A lot of powerful hardware is packed into a small package with this laptop. It's ultra-portable and great for traveling and on-the-go content consumption. But, it also has the power to get real work done. At the office or doing work at home, it would be great paired with an external monitor for real power-user tasks.

Quality, Performance, Stylish, Ultra-Portable 12/29/2019 1:13:45 PM

Pros: • Productivity task performance (word processing, web browsing, etc.) is excellent. Apps load quickly and respond instantly. The power of the CPU is clearly on display here.
• Work tasks (see other thoughts) performed admirably on this laptop. I didn’t notice any lag, slowdowns, or glitches. Felt like I was on my high-powered work laptop.
• Video playback is exceptional. Video streaming was flawless and the quality was outstanding. The screen has very little glare which is a must.
• Sound quality is outstanding: clear and crisp.
• Small, thin(!) and Lightweight – feels like a heavy tablet. I loved using this as my “couch”, “kitchen” and take anywhere laptop. I prefer it over my tablet for many tasks.
• Perfect for travel: fits airplane tray table and tight spaces.
• Stays cool – can get warm with high usage, but won’t toast your legs if on your lap.
• The design is beautiful. Shiny polished blue-silver metal. Looks better than any MacBook.
• The fingerprint sensor impressed me with how accurate and easy to use it is.
• Quiet. Even when gaming, the machine remained very quiet.

Cons: • Gaming performance was fair, but, this laptop is not billed as a gaming laptop.
• Power button placement. It took me a minute to find it the first time.
• Power brick and cord: brick plugs directly into your outlet, taking up a lot of space. Prongs do not retract or fold.
• No Ethernet port. Not a deal-breaker, but it would have been nice for large downloads and file transfers.
• Wi-Fi range was not as impressive as advertised but could be dependent on the wireless band that my router provides.
• The maximum sound volume could have been louder.
• Battery life was ho-hum. See other thoughts.

Overall Review: How I used this product:
I use various computers for 10-14 hours a day for work and gaming. I am a software engineer by profession and a PC Gamer. I have a work laptop (Passmark Rating 6,589, weight 8 lbs.) that I use to code using MS Visual Studio and VS Code. Many of the things I do require a large amount of system memory because I open and keep many applications running. I also require an SSD to ensure my time is spent efficiently.
In the evening, I play various games on my gaming desktop rig (Passmark Rating 5,919) with the latest gen i7 CPU and GeForce RTX 2060. If I am not gaming, I’m watching TV or movies.

My goal with this laptop was to compare this laptop to both my work laptop and my gaming rig with similar tasks that I perform throughout my day.

Tasks Performed:
• Coding: Excellent. No issues and worked just like my work laptop. This could easily replace my work laptop, especially if I traveled more often. Battery life is average as I am able to work for 6 hours straight without the need to plug-in.
• Gaming: Fair. I could not play high-end GPU intensive games above the lowest settings; however, I was still able to play most of them, e.g. “Shadow of War”, GTA V, XCom. Battery life is average with 3-4 hours depending on the game being played.
• Video playback: Flawless. Beautiful. The color depth and accuracy are outstanding. Just can’t praise it enough. Battery life is good with 6-8 hours of video playback (Over 7 hours of streaming Netflix).

Bottom Line:
Could this laptop replace my other computers as a “daily driver”? Yes, with some limitations. Gaming would not be satisfying, but I would be much more mobile. Do I like this laptop? Yes! I really enjoy using it.

Details:
• Passmark Rating 4,338.
CPU Mark: 8,642
2D Graphics Mark: 736
3D Graphics Mark: 2,494
Memory Mark: 2,448
Disk Mark: 14,200
• Out of the box: laptop and power-supply only. Nothing else but an abbreviated manual. The full manual is loaded onto the computer as a PDF, which I didn’t realize until I searched for it online.
• Sleek, metallic design that looks great and gets some looks.
• Boot time is fast: 4-7 seconds after the initial break-in period.
• Keyboard buttons are large, easy to press, responsive and have a great feel. Home keys are great, especially for those who touch type all day long.
• The fingerprint sensor on the touch-pad is a great idea. The fingerprint reader is very accurate and recognized my fingerprint right away after setup. Impressive considering other fingerprint readers I have tried through the years that often fail or are inaccurate, requiring numerous and annoying retries.

Delivers what it promises 12/28/2019 2:58:51 PM

Pros: - Overall solid build quality
- Light as a chromebook, but carries a ton more functionality
- Decent speaker/sound quality for its size
- No bloatware except ASUS web storage, which, whatever
- Graphical capabilities are about as good as you'll see in anything short of a gaming laptop

Cons: - Screen hinges appear to put a small amount of pressure on the display, which is sometimes visible as a slight discoloration along the bottom edge
- Battery life doesn't seem *quite* as long as advertised, though still well within what I'd expect for a SSD laptop
- Sometimes disconnects from WiFi for no apparent reason, although I can manually reconnect it instantly

Overall Review: I've been using ASUS components in my desktop builds for a long time because they perform well for their price range and tend to be pretty hassle-free compared to other manufacturers. This is my first ASUS laptop, and my impressions are pretty similar. I'm mostly using it for desktop publishing (heavy-duty image editing, layout design, stuff like that) and it runs all of my software smooth as silk. Works well for some light gaming as well.

Basically, what you see is what you get: light, runs cool and quiet, straighforward Windows install with no weird surprises baked in. Feeling pretty good about this one.

Impressed so far 12/26/2019 12:47:08 PM

Pros: 14” is the perfect size laptop and it appears very well built. It starts up fast and has very minimal sound while running.

Cons: The keyboard letters/numbers are a bit hard to see in certain lighting without turning on the backlight.

Overall Review: Great product
