if I buy the download for my windows vista basic home O.S. which is currently protected by "Norton" will it work without compatibility issues?

If you intend to run it alongside Norton, the answer is NO.  There are not many other antivirus programs that Norton is compatible with. You would need to remove Norton.  Webroot is perfectly compatible with Vista basic.

You download it from the web and updates and signatures are stored on their cloud service.  I love these guys, it doesn't bog down system and does a good job updating for latest threats so far as I've seen.

Yes, although it is misleading in the wording, even Webroots tech support chat says indeed their software contains a firewall.

Have you used this in conjunction with Malwarebytes Pro? If so has there been any interference?

Works excellent with Malwarebytes Pro on two of 3 systems but many problems with my NETGEAR NAS Software.

Probably best to check with customer service. I think what happens is that your account gets an extra key so if you activate this key now you will just have 1 extra key for 1 extra pc but if you activate it when your current one expires then you can use it for 1 extra year by switching the key.

You can use the Acer recovery utility loaded on your PC . Also can use system restore through windows. Hopefully you backed up the files. If didnt back-up use Acer recovery.

If I purchase a few of these today will the activation start today or the day I install on a computer? I don't plan on installing for a couple months until my current AV expires.

I did that this week with a copy I bought several months back and it works fine. Every a/v product I've installed has started the subscription on the day installed, not the day purchased. If the license is for multiple computers (3 or 4 user) you should know that the time starts when the first computer is activated - you don't get separate expirations for each computer - but other than that you should be fine.
