2nd Generation WD Black (512G2X0C) is better value, only 3rd gen (512G3XOC) is comparable to 970 Pro

Pros: Worked immediately and reliably in intel and amd systems
Faster and quieter than hard drives

Cons: This was first generation NVMe, about 40% better performance than 2.5" SATA III SSDs
for a similar price. 2nd Gen WDC Black (512G2XOC) is about 40% better than this one, but
only the 3rd Gen WDC Black 512G3XOC is comparable to Samsung 970.

Other Thoughts: Recommendation: Spend a little more and go with WD Black WDS512G3XOC which performs just as well as Samsung 970 pro (I now have a WDBlack 512G3XOC.It is slower than 970 pro on sequential reads, but faster on random read/write, overall performance about the same, the 3XOC is a good deal, but not the )

Obsolete - DO NOT BUY

Pros: None

Cons: Very slow read and write speeds compared to all competitors

Other Thoughts: There is a newer version of this drive and it looks EXACTLY the same. The NEW version has competitive read and write speeds, but not this version. Its about 2000MB/s reads and about 900MB/s writes. The NEW version is about double that, much like all competitors NVME drives. You've been warned. Good luck!

BSOD Galore

Pros: Speed was OK
Performed better than a regular HDD
MTTF specs are decent

Cons: Random BSOD and boot errors with Windows 10 Pro on Dell XPS 9560
Check disk would randomly appear upon boot
WD Dashboard had a lot of trouble updating when one was available
Slow compared to other M.2 SSDs on the market

Other Thoughts: Regular sata WD SSDs are more stable and reliable
Samsung M.2 SSDs perform much better, have a better dashboard with more features included

WD Destroyed My Life Yet Again

Pros: It was decent while it worked.

Cons: Abruptly died leading to complete loss of data with zero warning, recovery attempts failed, quote I got from a data recovery shop was outrageous.

Other Thoughts: Let me preface this by stating that this is my second awful experience with WD. The first nightmare was the loss of a raid array consisting of their oldschool Caviar drives back in the 90's/early 2000's. Not one, but two drives failed simultaneously resulting in basically a complete loss of 6 years of my digital life that I never was able to get back along with a multitude of work-related projects. After that, I basically swore off WD. Until recently, I figured hey, they're still around, people say good things about them, maybe things have changed. Snagged this thing up during a sale, seemed pretty good. I was wary of trusting it at first, but eventually I warmed up to it and started storing more and more important things that I needed quick access too, because to be honest, it performed as expected during it's short lived lifespan. That was a mistake. One day, with zero warning and out of nowhere, I got a "Invalid MS-DOS function." message pop up in Windows while trying to archive a few things on the drive for work. Tried accessing other things on the drive, same error, nothing on the drive seemed to be readable. Then the computer locked up. I thought, okay, Windows must just be going haywire, I'll just reboot and everything will be fine. Nope. Drive was no longer detected. I started freaking out, doing everything possible just to figure out what the hell happened and how I could fix it, it basically all was wasted effort. Went as far as buying a completely new Ryzen 3 chip and board just as a last ditch effort to get my data back, alas, it was futile. The data was gone, again, with a poof. No warning. Nothing. I was pretty much beside myself thinking about the whole issue, I didn't even care about warranty honestly. But eventually I forced myself to contact support and get it exchanged. THAT was another nightmare. At first I tried to just do an advanced RMA and get that going, failing to do that after wasting many hours on the WD site and forums trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, I sent an email with my issue. Here's the wonderful response I got:
"Issue Too Complicated For Email Support [ ref:_00DU0Jpn7._5000PijxXe:ref ]
Rajat Joshi wdsupport@wdc.com via yqgiuvbuyd1fabl6.44ti1.u-jpn7mac.na37.bnc.salesforce.com
Dear ******** **KER,
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Rajat.
I apologize for all the frustration you are experiencing. I feel as though we may be able to better resolve this issue over the phone. If possible, please provide us the following information so we can schedule a call back from a Level 2 Technical Support Representative."

Fan. Freaking. Tastic. I inform them when I'm available, a day goes by, then I receive another email stating

"We tried calling you back twice to create the Advance RMA for your drive serial number ********* but it seems that you were not available to answer our call. I request you to contact on our support number 1 (800) 275-4932 in order to create the Advance RMA. "

I checked my phone, no missed calls. Now, maybe it was my phone, or something out of their control but, at this point, I have a feeling no attempt was made. I reply stating okay, fine, I'll call you guys during your open hours. Surprise, immediately got hung up on by the automated system for whatever reason after calling in. I can't even begin to convey the level of anger that I felt at that exact moment. It felt so bad, it was almost surreal. Anyway, I'm done ranting, I guess I'm done with this since it's pretty obvious there's no recourse left for me except to whine about it on here so maybe someone else can avoid the situation that I had to endure, and not watch little portions of their digital life get destroyed in front of them.

If you read this so far, you're a wonderful person and I genuinely wish you a great day, hopefully it's better than mine. Apologies for the whining, cheers.

Average read speed for an NVMe SSD but poor write speed.

Pros: It worked right out of the box.
It has a five year warranty.
Its cheaper than the Samsung stuff.
It its so nice not to be running on spindled hard drives any more.

Cons: AS SSD benchmark showed read speed well above SATA III levels, but almost 20% below the PCIe NVMe values they claim. (~ 1663 MB/s).
Even more disappointing is that writes speeds are near SATA III levels. (~335 MB/s)

Smooth install in Gigabyte Aorus Z370 Gamer 7-OP

Pros: - good price/performance (4-star performance)

Cons: - no heat spreader?

Other Thoughts: - the gigabyte Z370 mobo had optane built in that caused me untold grief.. will review that separately.. this SSD purchase replaced it. They had an Arous heatsink/spreader with optane brand over the optane stick. I thought about using that on this SSD but ultimately have not done so.. this stick is under my videcard.. am a little worried about heat and airflow down there.. perhaps I should have used a different M.2 slot. Won't know until it is used in the wild. Was reporting 61c temps in tests.

Fast!

Pros: This thing is fast! I Love it!!

Cons: It gets a little hot.

Other Thoughts: I did have a little bit of trouble, but it was my fault. Note to self ; pay close attention to cable routing. I got a cable pinched between my Red Devil Vega and the heatsink. It wouldn't read or boot until I figured out that it has partially popped out of the socket. Glad it didn't fry.
