High PerformanceCombining SATA 3Gbps interface, high speed cache and large capacity, the WD Caviar Blue internal hard drives provides solid performance to meet the most demanding environments and applications.
Advanced Format Technology (AFT)Adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers as one of multiple ways to continue growing hard drive capacities, the Advanced Format Technology (AFT) is a more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities. (AALX models only).
WD Data Lifeguard TechnologyExclusive Data Lifeguard data protection features include shock protection, an environmental protection system and real-time embedded error detection and repair. WD's Data Lifeguard technology automatically finds, isolates and repairs problems that may develop over the life of a hard drive.
WD ShockGuard TechnologyShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Caviar drives to achieve industry-leading shock specifications.

Great reliable and inexpensive drive4/23/2013 10:24:49 PM
Pros: Fast enough for most uses, quiet, inexpensive. Reliable, has been running almost continuously in my windows home server computer for over 2 years with no problems.
Cons: Slightly slower than WDC Black drives but not enough to notice for most uses. Shorter warranty. Doesn't come in a 2TB version.
Overall Review: I got this drive a few years ago as the primary storage in my windows home server computer, and it has been perfect. I know it is a tiny bit slower than the WDC Black drives, doesn't have the same warranty, and supposedly isn't rated for continuous operations, but this drive has been more than fast enough for its purpose, it is quiet, and after more than 2 years of continuous operation it still is running very reliably.

Good so far.3/15/2010 8:06:20 AM
Pros: Quiet drives that work as advertised.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: I'm running 4 of these drives in a RAID10 array and so far they work as advertised. Since I've only had them for 2 weeks I can't say much more that. I will update my review at a later date.
Pros: Great buy. Got 2 of these drives on sale for 75 a piece and took a risk and threw them into a RAID 0. Boy for what people call a mid range hard drive, these things scream. Once I got everything up and running all nicely on Windows 7 Pro x64, I tested them out on HD Tune and I was amazed that they score 255mb max, 130mb min with a 215 avg read speed.
Cons: none.
Overall Review: for some reason after uninstalling my ati drivers to update to the newest one, it would corrupt my raid drivers and cause my os to not boot. so I simply just uninstall and the install the new drivers without and restart between them to solve this issue.
Good drives and at a good price5/14/2010 9:03:29 AM
Pros: cheap $/GB and fast. I have run these along side the "black caviar" 1TB drives and saw little to no difference in performance.
Cons: Ordered 5 drives, 1 was DOA out of the box.
Newegg is still packing harddrives horribly. There was plenty of space for the drives to move around in the box. Add in the fact that it looks like UPS played soccer with the box...and I'm pretty sure that's why the drive was DOA.
Overall Review: Running 5 drives in Raid 5 under Debian using software raid (mdadm). Over 175MBPS writes and over 400MBPS reads, not bad for a software setup.
Pros: Smoking fast, and very quiet. At the time I bought it, it was the lowest dollar per GB of any drive on the market. It was bubblewrapped well, a good improvement in their bare hard drive shipping.
Cons: None.
Overall Review: HDTach max read 139.9MB/s, avg 111.1MB/s, min 65.3 MB/s over eSATA in a Lacie enclosure. Faster than my WD1001FALS by 20 MB/s on the max and average. Dang!
Good Product/not for Linkstation NAS5/6/2010 8:10:25 AM
Pros: This is a great drive with overall good performance for a mid-range hard disk. Price is good and except it is not working for the purpose I bought it, GREAT PRODUCT!
Cons: I bought that hard disk for my LS-Pro Linkstation and unfortunately there are a couple series from WD (especially 1TB - 1.5TB) which are not compatible. So if you are looking for a LinkStation Pro/Live (LS-GL or DHGL) NAS Drive, you probably don't want this one. Anyways, still a good product and it will be used for different purpose. You never can have enough space.....
Cons: I ordered 3. One died within a day and another shortly thereafter.
I RMA'd the first one through Newegg, and its replacement was Dead On Arrival (terrible grinding noise before it stopped spinning period).
The other of the initial failed pair had to be RMA'd with Western Digital because it was on day 32 of ownership (I didn't get to try them out immediately after purchasing, unfortunately).
Overall Review: I've never had a problem ordering drives through Newegg before, but this has me seriously reconsidering. Are they just not handling these things with sufficient care?

Worthless, AVOID9/17/2010 8:18:51 PM
Pros: Very effective at preventing papers from blowing off my desk.
Cons: Defective from the moment I got it. Initially, it seemed fine. It passed the full WD test, so I went ahead and continued cloning partitions over. I kept getting bizarre and sporadic errors. I spent 2 days trying to fix them, but they increased in frequency. Then it got bad enough that my bios recognized the drive as faulty and the WD software confirmed that (very large number of remapped sectors as well as other problems).
Also, it is one of those annoying drives with 4k sectors but 512 byte sectors reported to the bios (4k physical / 512 logical). You have to align partitions manually or performance is terrible. I knew enough to do this, but why not just buy a 512 for now that will just work? Some earlier versions of Windows (pre Vista) really do not work well 4k drives, and cloning from a 512 to a 4k can be problematic.
This drive looked like a good value at $60. Unless your time is worthless, it's not. I returned it to the egg (who took it back without a restocking f
Overall Review: I always liked WD. However, I think the quality control has gone down. I think that the high capacity drives are very hard to produce now, and to increase yield, they are letting lower quality drives with more problems through quality control. WD wants you to pay up a lot more to get their higher quality enterprise RAID certified drives. I don't have a problem with higher performance drives costing more, but basic reliability should be there across the board.
