Purchased to learn about 3D printing. 1/20/2016 7:46:53 AM

Pros: Inexpensive, lots of support videos on YouTube, worked great right out of the box. The software and firmware it comes with suck which I knew before I bought it. I bought it with the intention of hacking it over to open source Repetier. I printed a few objects with the frustrating stock software then got some help and hacked it over.

It suits my purpose to learn about 3D Printing perfectly. I wanted to control all aspects of the printer and learning everything I could about 3D printing. This project worked perfectly for me in that goal. Expect to have to upgrade the extruder. Remember, the printer does not cost $1000-2000. When you buy the cheapest printer available then cry about having to upgrade some items, we'll, we know your not very realistic. I purchased mine for the purpose of learning and am doing exactly that. After 12+ days of printing time (over the last few months) I am now ready to upgrade the extruder to the E3D V6 hot end. I've made lots of things and the prints are beautiful. I went to a makers fair Pittsburg and only saw one booth printing things that looked nicer than my hacked XYZ. That let me know I was doing well. Having it running on Repetier means you can really tune the printer. It's really fun to make small changes to temperature or extrusion multiplier or many other things then print the object again and see the effects.

Check out my Crafted channel on YouTube to check out some of my projects. Search Crafted 3D Printing and it should come up. I'm using mine to make practical mechanical parts. I have made parts that are being used on my drill press and 1950 Atlas lathe. I've printed for myself parts that would otherwise have cost a great deal.

Remember, 3D printing requires you to be willing to work on and make adjustments to your machine whatever machine you buy. This technology isn't as refined as your typical toaster. If your a glossy box opener and expect the world to be as simple as a can opener, perhaps 3D printing is not for you. I'd rather be making things than sitting in front of the TV. To me, it's been a bargain and it's allowed me to catch up with technology I was behind on. I view the experience like a college class. I'm learning and that makes me happy. Yes, I'd buy another one and am looking for a deal at this moment. It's frustrating reading the reviews on this printer realizing that these people bought the cheapest thing available and then cried they didn't get a Cadillac or had to work through a problem. 3D Printing is full of adjustments and problem solving.

Cons: Factory software and firmware. Buy this for the purpose of putting open source software in it. Think about upgrading the extruder. It's a good printer if you want to wade in at low cost. Bad printer if you expect a Ferrari for a Chevy price.

Overall Review: I would recommend this product to a friend. It's not realistic to think of 3D printing as an open shiny box and be printing like a pro on 5 minutes. It's a learning process. Marketers want to convince you that you can. Realistically, any printer is going to need periodic adjustment and service. Regardless of what you buy, you will be learning these things.

factory packagers smash the itnernal components before delivery 6/4/2015 12:25:47 PM

Pros: colorful box!

Cons: i oredered two units from newegg. both came up dead on arrival with code 0033 - tray motor smashed during packing. not once but twice in a row!

advertised support and support hours for xyzprinting are posted when you call. i called from west coast during the posted tech support hours and got voicemail loop. following day i was put through to an offshore indian support representative with broken english. the forums seem to indicate this is what to expect from the brand, and some electrical engineers have repaired thier own unit using voltmeters and going through every connection at some cost of hours.

Recieved with bad extruder and no return policy. 2/26/2015 7:28:14 AM

Pros: It makes a great paper weight

Cons: Don't buy it due to its return policy.
I recieved the unit with a bad extruder. XYZ has yet replaced my extruder and it has been a solid month. XYZ seems to be confused what to do after i mail in my extruder.

Overall Review: Not sure what the deal is with XYZ's support but i mail in my extruder on week 2. They ignore me till i ask what is going on week 3. They tell me they will give me the tracking number of the new extruder then never give me a tracking number then close the case. I get the case reopened they again say they will send me a tracking number 3 days have now gone by with no reply.

Great Printer, Useless Scanner 2/6/2015 5:54:05 PM

Pros: Printer works great. Especially considering the price. A friend has a Makerbot and the print quality is pretty much the same.

Cons: 3D scanner is almost useless. A bit slower than the Makerbot, but not a big issue for me. Out of the box it only works with XYZPrinting filament. However, you can get a resetting tool to use any 1.75mm filament.

Overall Review: Considering the price point I am quite happy with the purchase. Sure you can get better 3D printers for way more money, but with the rapid progress in this new technology I am planning to upgrade in a couple years with the money I saved.

Wish I had bought elsewhere 1/12/2015 4:59:10 PM

Pros: Inexpensive, cool when it works

Cons: An exercise in patience; mine came with the x-axis shift problem, which took a long time for me and xyz to figure out; after 30+ calibration attempts, screw A became threaded and the nut came loose. I tried to get a refund like you can at other sites, but newegg won't do exchanges or refunds on this printer.

Overall Review: This is very cool technology and there is a lot of things to like about this printer, but I definitely wish I had bought elsewhere or splurged and bought a nicer printer with this effort needed

Nice printer that's easy to use 12/26/2014 10:35:47 AM

Pros: This printer is easy to setup and use. I unpacked it and followed the instructions to remove the tie downs and insert the printer spool. The construction seems pretty solid and the exterior is nicely designed.

Cons: The scanner leaves a little to be desired. I've only scanned a couple of things so far. The first item was ceramic and had a shiny surface. This messed with the scan and created a rough object with holes. I bought some spray on tool dip which creates a rubberized surface that can be removed. This helped to get a much better scan. The printer does seem to take a while to print but overall the printed items have come out very nicely.

Overall Review: Overall I'm very happy with the purchase of this printer. I've followed the 3d printing since it started to take off with make.com. I'm excited to see where the future will take this technology.

Fun New Toy! 12/6/2014 1:36:05 AM

Pros: After calibration, the prints are amazing (on the highest quality resolution). You can still see and feel the layers, but the prints look great, for a printer in this price range.

Setup/unpacking was easy.

Most of the included instructions were easy to follow.

The printers exterior looks good, and the printer makes some really cool noises while printing.

Cons: If you are excited about the built in scanner, I would recommend looking elsewhere. The scanner has a hard time seeing anything. It scans once with each laser (2 lasers) and then stops scanning. the scans are not usable, by them selves.

The documentation you receive with the printer, stresses, that you should not calibrate the printer unless necessary... Calibration, can be a bit of a challenge (calibration instructions are minimal...). My printer should have been calibrated, before I wasted two print jobs, due to the print bed being out of alignment (due to shipping?).

Overall Review: The "included" cartridge, contains about half the filament, of the replacement cartridges.

The software that is included, does not include any editing programs. Although the included "XYZware" program will let you scale a printable object (change the size), before printing.

My rating's;
Technology 3D Printing: 5 stars
Technology 3D Scanning: 1 star
Ease of usability: 4 stars
Coolness Factor: "6" stars

average of 4 stars
