5 out of 5 eggsThe One To Get

Pros: Excellent/heavyweight build quality, decent sound, comes w/remote control, stylish, can used wired (Cat5 network cable) or wireless wi-fi (b or g), AC powered via 110v (no transformer required...who needs another one of those?), stations can be added to a personalized list via Reciva.com then accessed via the Sangean via your 'My Stuff' folder on the radio itself, 12 presets (vs. 5 on the popular Grace model sold elsewhere).

Cons: Single knob operation (I know...part of what also makes it stylish: it's a love/hate thing), while the overall build quality is excellent the single knob is plastic and feels a teeny bit on the flimsy side, not portable (AC powered only)--would be nice if battery powered to use outside on the patio.

Overall Review: This is definintely the way to go if you're into radio. It sounds fairly rich and deep given it's small size (note the measurements and you'll see it's not all that big...fits nicely on a bedside nightstand). The unit essentially works in conjuction with the Reciva.com website where stations can be picked by location or genre or searched by call letters or name. Once you've picked your favorites they can be accessed via the radio itself. I'm having fun listening to BBC Radio Shropshire, Australian talk radio, Nova-M (yea...Mike Malloy at last), stuff from everywhere. I picked this as a gift to myself --I was between a Zune and an Internet Radio: Now that I've got the Sangean I'm totally happy with my choice. This thing is getting a lot of use so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat new toy

Pros: Reasonably good sound for a radio that size
Its ability to receive much more variety that what is available on local stations
Well worth the price
(Personally I don't have an issue with the one knob as the prior reviewer does)

Cons: The display is too small and could be of far better quality. Overall, the radio would much benefit if it had a touch screen display.
The remote is much too small for my large hands and only addresses 6 of the 12 stations that can be preset.

Overall Review: After spending many hours in an attempt to get it to work, I finally called Sangean. It couldn't find any WiFi connections even though the radio was setting a few inches from my laptop which was picking up my router.
It was determined that the unit I received was DOA and not a problem with my misunderstanding of how to set it up. I was impressed with Sangean in that the phone was answered on the first ring by someone who was technically competent (and spoke English as a native language).
I attempted to set up an RA with Newegg on line with the result that I was expected to pay for return shipping. After calling Newegg, I was emailed a prepaid return label.
After about 2 weeks, UPS stopped by with a replacement. I plugged it in and it immediately found my WiFi. Of course connecting to it was another problem. I had to revise my router configuration which wasn't easy, because I don't fully understand cryptic router geek talk.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Excellent sound quality.
- Locks Wifi signal even at distances (>50m).
- Great looks and a solid build
- Sangeans are quality radios
- Built in Clock with adjustable dimmer
- simple to setup
- Reciva.com works like a champ with this product (please have a look at the site before purchasing)

Cons: I little wacky in terms of "tuning" in radio stations. The display is on the small side and scrolling through the stations despite the categories (there's 6000 stations!) can be tedious.

Overall Review: If you like radio, you'll love this product. It's expensive, but worth the price

5 out of 5 eggsExceeded My Expectations!

Pros: This radio has defiantly exceeded my expectations. It sounds as good as or better than any radio in its class. It took about 15 minutes to set up and the documentation (89 pages) is divided in easy to find sections. I like the single knob control and think it makes using the radio easy. The remote control has 30 buttons and is about the size of a credit card. The buttons are a nice size, well marked and spaced so it is easy to use. I love the ability to be able to play all of my music from my media network hard drive. People visiting have made only positive comments about the looks, size and sound. I like this so much I bought a second one!

Cons: The LCD is on the small side and you need to be less than 8 feet away to read the display. But I am 58 years old and my eyes aren’t what they use to be.

2 out of 5 eggsWish I had waited.

Pros: Overall it works as advertised. Audio quality is ok for such a small unit, if slightly flat sounding.

Cons: Navigating the menus is reminiscent of using much older devices. It has that 'home brew' feel to it, it will reboot itself on occasion. Stereo seperation is minimal while playing MP3s. My biggest problem with the unit is that you must go through too many steps each time you power the unit on from standby if you want to stream over wifi from your PC. The 'stylish' remote is anything but, it is like a credit card sized remote with plastic bubble buttons that have to be pressed hard to ensure they work every time.
Does not retain the 'Playback Mode' setting after entering standby, you must manually select 'Shuffle' everytime.

Overall Review: Steps required to stream from PC:
Exit standby and then,
1 - Go through the menu to change the 'Playback mode' to 'Shuffle'.
2 - Select 'Media' on the remote.
3 - Scroll and select my UPNP share
4 - Select 'Music'
5 - Select 'All Music', then wait for it to load 500 titles.
6 - Scroll up and select 'More...', it then loads 500 more titles.
6 - Repeat step 5 until all files names are loaded.
7 - Select "Add to queue'
8 - Start playback of music.

Here is Sangean's email reply:
Unfortunately there is not much more we can do with the operation of this function or how it works. I will be working with them on the future versions and as the radios mature and grow we will surely see a vast improvement in how this is achieved.
The price for this unit is a premium price considering you can buy portable audio/video players with hi-res color LCD screens and GBs of storage. I expected firmware updates, updating firmware to retain 'Playback mode' setting should be easy. But no go.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor internet connectivity

Pros: Easy to set up
Very good sound quality

Cons: WiFi drops stations continually. Also does not always connect to WiFi without rebooting.

Overall Review: I know the WiFi is very poor on this device as I have it sitting next to a Grace Digital receiver which never drops a station.

1 out of 5 eggsUpgrade ruins it

Pros: Great little wifi radio that was a little quirky in the control department.

Cons: Ruined by upgrade 003, in which Reciva was trying to implement an EU requirement that wouldn't allow a certain component to stay powered. Consequently when you turn it on, it takes over 60 seconds to connect. There is no easy way to revert to the earlier version (002) without resorting to complicated 3rd party software. In effect, the upgrade has turned this into a pricey brick.

Overall Review: Sangean did not respond to my inquiries. The problem is documented on the Reciva forum. If you buy, do not upgrade to version 003 if you have that choice.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Future of Broadcast Radio

Pros: I am impressed with the fit, finish and sound of this unit. Set up to my secure wireless router took about one minute. Sound quality is very nice once you adjust the bass/treble to your liking. No drop outs or pauses so far. Easy to adjust if you take time to read directions.

Cons: Wish it had a basic internal search function so I could enter call letters of a particular station. But then, perhaps the reciva.com function will allow that. I have yet to explore that functionality.

Overall Review: I have listened to shortwave stations for decades but find this device to offer incredible choices with solid sound and fidelity. From the Cook Islands, to France, to Spain to domestic AM stations, its all there and the fun is in the exploring. It's the future of broadcasting.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst Impressions

Pros: Sound quality is very nice. You'll get used to the single knob control that some people complain about.

Cons: The first thing I noticed was that the unit could find my WiFi at my desired location. (It found my neighbors) My previous unit a Roku didn't have this problem nor does my existing iPod Touch. I relocatated the unit across the room and the unit connected. The unfortunate thing about it's location is that the remote seems to only work from 10-15 feet which is to short to communicate with it from my seating/sleeping location.

Overall Review: I purchased this item as Alarm clock radio and compared to the others I evaluated, build, sound and feature quality seem to be better. Ultimately I think I made the right choice, the Wifi issue can be resolved by adding another access point.

5 out of 5 eggsI love it!

Pros: Great radio, lots of fun and something no ones knows about. We lost our Air America station and now I have several to choose from. My piano tuner thought it was my stereo system it was sitting in front of. I like many features such as the ability to plug my stereo or low power transmitter into it so I can listen to my stations anywhere in my house without moving my radio. Also I have carried to other wifi networks and can set it up in a minute and have it remember my own home settings. Finding new stations has been a blast, my wife and I were dancing to one station for an hour - nice. I would recommend it to anyone especially those who wish to avoid turning on their pc. The playlists created on the Recivia web site or on the radio is quite adequate.

Cons: Setti.ng up my wifi required me to change my router to linksys so that it would be stable/ My old router would cause drop outs if I did not reboot my router. Not really the radios fault.

Overall Review: I am thinking of buying more to sell to my friends and neighbors for christmas

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: Initial impressions: Very well made. Heavy. Excellent sound quality. Intuitive user interface (throw away the manual). I live in a small radio market where the local stations are weak and frequently off the air. I can now get my favorite shows dependibly with perfect reception and fidelity.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsEXACTLY what I'd hoped for!

Pros: In chronolgical order, rather than by importance:

1) Arrived quickly, safely;
2) Attractive and well-made.
3) Very quick and straightforward setup;
4) Comprehensive manual as well as quick-view sheet for reference;
5) From time it was plugged in and powered up to playing the station of my choice, under one minute.
6) Excellent sound, especially for size.
7) Offers choice of Wifi or cabled connetion.
8) Offers an alarm clock and sleep function.
9) Has audio out jack in addition to a headphone jack. Not all models/brands out there have an audio out jack.

Cons: In all honesty, have not found one yet. If I do, I will come back and update this review.

Overall Review: I've always listened to music by way of FM radio, but found that I was becoming more dissatisfied with FM radio programming as time passed. Stations were being sold, bought out, the music format and style changed, until finally I found myself practically hating "regular" radio. The commercials were driving me nuts! Additionally, I am not what anyone could classify as a "channel flipper". With the exception of being in the mood for a different genre now and then, I'd rather pick a station and just leave it there, because I like it.

I considered satellite radio, but after a fair amount of research, concluded that there was a pretty paltry selection of stations to choose from. Sure, there might be lots of stations out there, but how many actually fit my tastes was a different matter altogether. When I am reading or writing, I prefer Smooth Jazz because it doesn't interfere with my thinking...yeah, yeah, go ahead and laugh if you want to =D.
I did try a three day satellite radio

2 out of 5 eggsNice Sound, Poor Support

Pros: Stereo. Nice Tone. Good Bass and Sharp Highs. Good looking unit.

Cons: One knob control is a bit tiring. Remote could be a little more functional. Where is the 'shift' key to get to the second 6 presets? No web interface for user control of the radio.

Main con is with funky support from the Reciva Company. Understand that Reciva manufactures the module which makes this and several other brands of wifi radio work. There is no way to directly program your own presets into this radio via a web interface or other method. One *MUST* gain access to the Reciva server in order to use the database or modify your list of presets. This is a real problem. If the servers are down, then you can't even listen to a station in memory!

Reciva's servers seem to experience problems at inconvenient times and the response is not terribly swift to fix them. Currently dozens of users have been reporting that their radios are unable to connect to their networks. (since 05-09-08). This episode has been going on about two days now.

Overall Review: The product is a nice idea, but there is a great lack of control from the users's standpoint. If Reciva's servers were to go down, then this product would be next to useless for most users.

Sangean would do well to protect their otherwise excellent reputation by distancing themselves from this product.
