NetbooksNetbooks are small- to medium-sized, lightweight, energy-efficient, Internet-centric laptops, generally optimized for Web surfing and e-mailing. Netbooks, which have also been called mini notebooks or ultraportables, are usually smaller than a typical laptop. While the earliest models, like Asus' EEE PC, had limited features, more recent Windows 7 laptop models come with a more complete feature set. Many manufacturers are now using solid-state drives (SSD drives) instead of hard disk drives as their storage system, but SSDs are still relatively limited by expense and capacity in comparison. Intel Atom, AMD NEO CPUs are all used as low-power, higher efficiency processors for the ultraportables. Windows in its various forms is the most popular operating system, but Linux is moving up fast, and represented over 30% of Netbook OSs by the end of 2009.
