* Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11g and draft 802.11n specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, buildings materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect wireless signal range. Wireless range and speed rates are relative performance measurements based on the wireless range and speed rates of a standard Wireless G product. Maximum throughput based on draft 802.11n devices.

  • newegg Dual-Band Access Double your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands speed up to 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur in 2.4GHz, wireless HD content streaming takes place in the super-fast 5GHz band at the same time, so both achieve optimized speeds and you enjoy smooth, buffer-free HD content streaming.
  • newegg Hardware NAT Equipped with a capable hardware NAT acceleration engine and built-in Gigabit Ethernet, it gives you full Gigabit internet performance, making its WAN to LAN throughput up to 2-5 times that of traditional software-based NAT Gigabit routers.
  • newegg 300,000 Data Sessions Support for a massive data pipeline of up to 300,000 data sessions means the RT-N56U has around 20 times the networking capacity of other high session routers, so multiple data transfer jobs don’t slow down even during heavy load.
  • newegg Ai Radar This unique and efficient design drastically increases wireless signal coverage and quality without increasing power consumption. It intelligently adapts beam patterns to local conditions to enable higher-gain directional signal emulation. Ai Radar shapes signals to offer the strongest possible output, transforming what may be a weak omnidirectional signal to a stronger unidirectional one, improving throughput at same time.

5 out of 5 eggsMost stable I've had

Pros: When I moved out, I left this router with my parents and I'll be buying the same one for myself.

This router, and I've had many others, has been the most consistent, the more reliable that I've ever had. I especially love the ability to remotely access the settings to troubleshoot although I never needed to. The thing is just a constant amazement.

I cannot comment on the adapter (sold separately) since I didn't require it, but the connection speed with my internal laptop modem (a 4 year old laptop, mind you) was around 70 - 100Mbps and that was enough for lag-less online gaming.

So if you're in the market for a WIFI router and a bit low on cash or want something not as expensive as the newer ones, then you won't be disappointed with the RT-N56U.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Asus rules.

3 out of 5 eggsDied at One Year

Pros: Worked great for a year. Range was pretty good and reached at least 100 feet.

Cons: Like others have said, it died right after warranty expired. It ran hot a lot. Luckily, I have a 12 year old D-link in a box and it still works. It will have to do until I can buy something won't be an Asus.

Pros: I need help here thinking of one

Cons: Broke in a little over a month
5 days, still no response to RMA
Runs hot
Flimsy build quality/construction
Lack of Customer Service

Other Thoughts: I called to inquire about the RMA. The tech said he couldn't take care of it, the email had to come from the RMA team. I was told it would be a two week turnaround after that.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Impressed

Pros: -Sleek Design?

Cons: -Runs Extremely Hot
-Range is miserable. Far worse than older routers.
-Price is far too high for a router that cannot even provide stable connection to my whole house. My old 20$ Wireless G router has no issue at all reaching all of our property. This router will not even extend past one room.

Other Thoughts: Router appears to have broken not even one year after purchase. Considering my old Linksys Router lasted 8 years, I'm really upset with this purchase. I regret buying this router.

2 out of 5 eggsIt used to work fine

Pros: I purchased this router 3 years ago from Newegg because of the router's high reviews at many reputable sites. It worked very well over the 3 years with both bands and rarely needed a reboot because of wireless problems. It's wireless speed was very acceptable. The router was powered on 24x7x365.

Cons: It worked really well until last month. The 5Ghz band started to fail. I would reboot the router and would get a 5Ghz signal for approx 1 minute then it would fail. I retried doing this several times and would get the same result. So I looked for any firmware updates and there was one so I installed the latest firmware which is After the firmware update it still was behaving identically. So I figured I'd do a hard reset of the router (using the reset button) and reconfigured the router since of course it loses your configuration after a reset and it still failed pretty quickly. So I then thought it may be heat related so I unplugged it for a day and then plugged it back in and it started working. Well a day later the 5Ghz band started failing again so it most likely is the hardware that drives that band must be over-heating and makes that band fail. The 2.4Ghz band still works fine.

In case ASUS support is reading this, I have made no configuration changes with the router in well over a year other than updating to the latest firmware per above and my network devices that are 5Ghz capable haven't changed at all. Our Android phones and windows laptops have the latest patches and there were no updates immediately prior to the 5Ghz band failing. None of our phones or laptops can connect to the 5Ghz band so it's not device specific. All of them were able to connect to the 5GHz band before this problem started. Also, when I try to connect to the 5Ghz band I have my device right next to it so the proximity is less than 2 feet. After the reboot the device see's the 5Ghz band and tries to connect then fails since in a minute or two it no longer see's the 5 Ghz band
so it can't connect. It won't see the 5Ghz band again until I reboot the router or power it off for awhile.

Looking at ASUS's website it was almost impossible figuring out what the warranty period was but I think it's just 1 year so I am out of warranty.

Other Thoughts: I figured I'd write this review to re-enforce other recent reviews that this router was pretty good but seems to have a hardware over-heating problem after a couple years of use. I most likely won't be buying another ASUS product per this experience. I've had many other wireless routers and I also purchased my cisco/linksys router at the same time as this router which is also dual band and it's still working like a champ. This is the first router that I had a failure on. I only have needed to upgrade my routers because I wanted greater speeds or different bands to lower the chance of interference.

2 out of 5 eggsIt did work great.

Pros: Worked great, had decent range, Nice interface. Would rarely need a reboot.

Cons: Seems to of died after 1yr 6m. It started losing range and slowing down. Drop connections became more frequent. Felt like it was overheating.

Other Thoughts: Expensive router to die in less than 2 years.

1 out of 5 eggsHad for 1yr 6 months

Pros: None, mine is slow, drops connections, and has lower than average range, its garbage.

Cons: NAS is slow (too slow for streaming movies even 480p), everything is slow, can't handle too many connections (starts to overheat/drop/go slower), worst ASUS brand product I have owned.

Other Thoughts: I really thought this was gonna be awesome cause I am a big Asus fan, but its hardly awesome. They should re brand this to a no name brand.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed in 3 months

Pros: Loaded right up and went to work.

Cons: Unit failed in 3 months and the Asus website is not even remotely set up for returns. In fact they make it impossible and don't even try to call because you get sent to voice mail and told to leave a message to which they never respond.

Thanks to NewEgg for handling this for me.
