Is this a cd version, or download?  If CD, why does it mention 1 year subscription on the package?  Thanks, Jim

It contains a cd, yes, and the subscription starts with the first log in after the first machine install.  Also, while you have the disk, it will log into norton for the latest version of the software so you will be much more up to date immediately.  The year begins for your account with that first machine.  Subsequent installations on your other computers will consider the year as begun with your first date of registration.
    In short, if you wait a week after your first install to install to your other computers, you will have lost a week of coverage.  
   If one were hoping to get five years out of this on one machine, that is not possible.

Can this be used for 5 PCs or is it only for use with 5 different systems ie: 1 pc 1 laptop one android phone etc.?

Can be used for 5 PCs of any type (I have it on 1 laptop and 3 PCs in my home), but is limited to PCs you own (typically those in the same household).  While I have not necessarily tried this to confirm but I understand that you can buy product then share the download with your neighbors and/or relatives.

IF I BUY THE DOWNLOAD FOR 5 DEVICES AND INSTALL IT ON 5 DEVICES (TWO DIFFERENT 3 CPU LICENSES WITH DIFFERENT EXPIRATIONS) WILL THE ONE YEAR BE ADDED TO THE CURRENT SUBSCRIPTONS?  SO THEN I WOULD HAVE THREE AND TWO DEVICES WITH DIFFERENT SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRATIONS OF 1 YEAR PLUS THE MONTHS OF THE UNEXPIERD SUBSCRIPTIONS

New subscription. Norton makes you pay for an upgrade for each key so buying a new one doesn't affect your old ones.  I have used free versions till the other keys got closer to expiring.  That way I maximized the new key.  Down to just one now.

Question 4

Will this work for/on Windows 8 or 8.1? Kindle Fire?

According to the instructions, it can be installed on Windows, Mac, Android and IOS.  The utility CD shows Windows 8.1, 7, Vista, XP, Mac OS X10.7 & 10.8.  Since Kindle is a modified Android, it may run.  All install are supposed to be through a browser.
