Is there an option to run in 32-bit mode? Can I run this on a 32 bit machine?

This is the 64-bit version and there's nothing to indicate that the 32-bit version is included.  If it's not included, then you will not be able to install this software on a machine that doesn't carry a 64-bit capable processor.  Setup will detect whether it's a 64-bit capable processor and if not, it will stop the installation entirely.

Is this the version with DRIVE EXTENDER?

If you mean the ability to pool drives into a single drive and add drives to the pool, no. This ability can be added with additional software but is not built in like the previous version of Windows Home Server.

What edition 7, 8 ?

It is neither Windows 7 or Windows 8, it is a Server Operating System not a desktop Operating System,. It is based off the platform of Windows Server 2008, just a stripped down version with a user friend GUI for the end user to preform the basic functions of its intended purpose. So to answer your question, it is neither, as the name says, "Home Server." The intended purpose is to have a small in home local server.

Once it is installed can anything be done on the actual computer?  Or does everything have to be done remotely?  If it can do stuff on the console does it have driectx?  Could I make it my home theater pc?  Or install MS Office on it and use it as a desktop?

How many times can I install this?

As far as I know the licence is for one pc, however you should be able to install as many times as is nessessary if gou have a crash,etc.
Sometime you have to call an 800 number & enter the code on screen to reactivate & will be asked how many time, 1 is the correct answer.

• Windows Home Server 2011 server software is a 64-bit only operating system.

• You can install the server software either manually or unattended.

• System Requirements:

? 1.4 GHz x64 processor.

? 2 GB RAM

? At least one 160 GB hard drive.

• NTFS is the only supported file system.

• Supported Networking Configuration:

1. Your server computer must be connected via a network cable to a router.

2. The router should be a UPnP-certified device, but it is not required.

3. The router should be in the 192.168.x.x subnet, but it is not required.

I have a question about the backups, specifically their viability vs virus/spyware attacks such as cryptolocker which effectively corrupts your files.

Are the backups that this windows home server takes able to do file 'versioning' or history where you can go back to a previous version of a file not just its most recent state?

If so, how robust is this version ability how far will it go back, etc.

I can only tell you a little about the WHS 2011 since I just got it setup up fairly recently.

However, I do know that it does backups based on dates, so you could go back to a previous version if necessary.

No not unless you owned this before then backed up your computer to the computer running this, if you have windows 7 search google for "windows 7 digital river iso" download the version on your product key, write to a dvd, then use that to restore

will this work with HP Home server?

I used it with a HP MediaSmart Server Ex470.  The short answer is yes, but if you don't have a video connection, it is not a simple install process.  Further, I found it to be MUCH more restrictive that the WHS v1.  I have since switch to a Linux solution because WHS v2 is not as user friendly as the original.

Will this software update my whs 2003 server software in a hp  media smart server?

If you have a HP MediaSmart version with a 64-bit CPU (in my case an EX490), you can install WHS2011 but it will wipe out all your existing backups. If you have a 32-bit CPU and are adventurous, you could trying upgrading to a 64-bit CPU before changing the software. WeGotServed and other websites have detailed instructions on how to do either or both.

I've successfully installed both WHS2011 and Windows Server 2012 Essentials on this hardware.
