4 out of 5 eggsGood Advance Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Many advanced features. Adjustable antennas are removable if you want to upgrade them. The Asus firmware and software updates have been easy enough to install.

Fast & stable

Cons: The printer port / USB port have proven trouble some to use - Not Plug & Play. (-1 egg)

Unit does tent to run Hot as it uses about 10 watts of power.

Very Poor cooling design (like most routers) the Design team makes the case "stylish" rather than functional for natural cooling.

Other Thoughts: My Cooler Master case has a large fan on the top so ** I passively cool the Router, seems to improve reliability / stability.

Hey - ASUS - put a fan in your routers or add a grill on the top for natural convection to keep this 10 watt beast cool.

Your going to need to read up on the feature if IT networking is not your field - LOTS of great features - may overwhelm the casual user.

2 out of 5 eggsGood router but drops connections after 2 years of use

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The first 2 years I had great connections with this router.

Cons: Going into my third year, I now have to reboot this router every day.

Other Thoughts: I usually upgrade the router when a new version comes out but that may be part of my troubles. Luckily I bought an extended warranty on this device.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsOverheats

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: It has a lot of features and great range

Cons: Randomly and intermittently restarts due to overheating. I contacted Asus and RMA'd which I had to pay for despite owning it for less than a month time. They did absolutely nothing and sent it back with the same problem. After much agony dealing with their customer service I learned I'd have to RMA it again (and pay shipping). I didn't way to pay the money or have time to deal w/ downtime so I tried to fix it myself. I voided my warranty and opened it and immediately noticed poor ventilation. There's nearly no opening near the heatsink. Fortunately just taking the top off fixed my problem and works fine now - as long as the top stays off.

Other Thoughts: Don't' bother with this one. Customer service is bad. Will make you pay for shipping, and are inept at diagnosing problems.

What makes it worse is that the more research I do the more it looks like this is a known issue yet they pretended that they didn't know about it - which is quite dishonest

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer

We value your time and effort in posting your thoughts about the product and in our customer service. We will take note of this concern that you experienced. 5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: AsusWRT is an excellent Gui. Feature Packed. Easy to navigate. Has good descriptions of settings.

Features I use:
- Built in VPN Client. I have 2 profiles, one for torrent and one for watching hulu. Once configured with vpn server address, username, password its as easy as logging into the router and clicking a button to connect to the specific VPN profile. I start the VPN client on the router, connect my roku to the wifi and i get hulu access.
- wireless. None of my devices are AC. and only one uses N (so only one computer uses the 5ghz band). I get great penetration through concrete walls. using the Asus PCE-AC56 i get 3 bars one floor above and 30-40ft horizontal distance. These are concrete walls. my understanding is typical wireless routers get 1 or 2 bars (this from neighbors and their experiences with linksys etc)

Features I think are cool
- can host its own samba share. Friggin cool. plug in an external hard drive and boom. you have a file server.
- can host a print server via usb. have not used it. but looks handy if you have a printer thats not wireless and wish to print over the wireless network.

Cons: Wireless
- i have been having an issue when connected to VPN that it does not forward DNS settings on my android devices (AT100 toshiba/jellybean, Samsung galaxy Tab4/newest droid OS). but im not sure thats the fault of the router.

File server
- I doubt its security because there was a white paper published about enabling your ftp service on the router can allow unauthorized users to modify your files.

If only it had a cable modem as well it would be a one stop shop but they would charge another 50 bucks.

Other Thoughts: Its a good router at a reasonable price. NOT cheap but NOT expensive either. Your getting exactly what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like it should.

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Excellent range.
Very snappy and fast WiFi. Getting ping results from ping.org down to 12ms.
Dual WAN (I don't really need for it but some might have a use for it)
USB ports
VPN set up (Wouldn't recomend it because of the amount of RAM and CPU power if you are going to have more than 5 users on at once)
ASUS seems to be good at giving it Frimware updates.
256MB of RAM which is a lot for a little router like this.

Cons: Looking at other reviews for other routers around the same price range have slightly better CPU's but I got this because it was on sale at the time and the faster CPU's seem to be better for the USB ports for the most part.
Gets a little warm for a room that is 65F all the time but doesn't seem it gets hot enough to damage the equipment. Would like to see a small fan in it for ventilation. It seems to runs a little cooler when I turned the WiFi power down from 100% to 50% and didn't affect performance but it did effect range a little bit but that was expected and not a big issue for my house.
Technology seems to be still stuck on wireless N and only a few things are AC now.
Gives out random IP addresses that are all over the place and have to manually set them to static. Like my Printer.

Other Thoughts: I have this router behind a pfSense server for more LAN and WLAN connections.
The NAT software they use is very well done because it doesn't slow down my internet connection at all.
Only thing I had to do was make the WAN port a static IP address because it was messing up my server every 5 days. Change my LAN IP for no IP conflictions. Other than that it’s a great little router that can get the job done even for a small business.

1 out of 5 eggsFalling back to my decade old WRT54G

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Box was packed well. Router looked good. Arrived fast. Worked well during initial setup.

Replacement router had the same high points.

Cons: After about a week, the first one (yes, two have died on me so far) started rebooting every 2-5 minutes. Lost logs every reboot, so hooray for help in troubleshooting the issue. Eventually it would lose SSID too.
So I called Asus support as instructed by the handy insert card. After about an hour with Asus phone support (cell log says it lasted 51:53), I was told my problem could be the Ethernet cable from my desktop to the router.

I repeat: the tech told me my Ethernet cable could be causing my router to reboot.

After asking if that was what they REALLY meant to say, I was put on hold for a few minutes. When the tech returned, I was quickly told the router was beyond repair and I should RMA through Newegg.

I wrote it off as possibly damaged in shipping (no problem, it occasionally happens) and my bad luck getting a newbie support rep who happened to find a problem not covered by their script. I called Newegg, got a live voice within 60 seconds, and within another 60 had a shipping label arriving via email.

The second router arrived. Worked for about a week, then the same constant reboot issue. 2nd support tech was more experienced than the first. We went through several different firmware versions, including restoring from rescue mode. The rebooting laughed at our feeble attempts and continued every 2-5 minutes.
I don't want Newegg to have to pay any more for poor Asus QC, so I'll be trying to repair/replace this one through the Asus warranty.

Other Thoughts: Like the 2nd tech, I was thinking the problem might just be flaky firmware. Several versions and 2 routers later, that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm wondering what the odds are that a 3rd router will be trouble free.

Not looking forward to another month of using an ancient WRT54G until I can find out.

Tech level: I've got 13 active IT certs (most in infosec) and used to repair radar systems. And DSLAMs. If I can't figure out how to make your product work, it probably shouldn't be on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Easy initial setup. Supports DD-WRT and the installation of DD-WRT was straight forward. Gives good coverage through most of the house, only a small spot at the opposite corner where the signal drops out. Distance and several walls in between are the cause. I am still setting up the house, so I haven't had a change to move it to its final location.

Cons: Unbalanced when upright and there are more than one or two wired connections. It does slide easily when one of the wires is tugged on (cats like to play with the wires). Some shelf liner or non-slip pads will help that.

Other Thoughts: Looking at buying another one for my uncle to replace an older router.

4 out of 5 eggsThe good and the bad

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Ran for a bit over two years flawlessly, no glitches whatsoever.

Cons: The 5 GHz stopped radiating at about 2.1 years, just out of warranty.

Other Thoughts: However, the good news is it still perking, as I disassembled the unit (A tough task, they do NOT want you inside!), reseated the cables from the circuit board to the antenna connectors, and now running like new.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Great range, my primary pc is located 2 floors below the router and I get 4ish/5 bars. Ability to remotely monitor, configure, and control the router is really useful.

Cons: Sometimes the internet connection disappears over wireless connection. Can be fixed by disconnected and reconnecting to the router.

Other Thoughts: My previous router was a WRT54G which was quite old, This is the only other wireless router I have experience with.

1 out of 5 eggsMost Expensive Paperweight I've Ever Owned

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: This product on paper is great, lots of options/features to basically configure your network however you like. Specs are great as well.

Cons: This product purely just does not work, Google the model number (RT-AC66U) just to see all of the problems that people have with it. Initially the wireless signal would drop just after 10 minutes or so. That being said I have done all sorts of research and troubleshooting. I have changed virtually every setting in the interface, rebooted (both soft and hard), factory reset, etc and nothing worked. The final straw really was when after updating the firmware the router is now bricked.

I will seriously stay away from ASUS networking products in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

If you feel you feel you unit is stuck or you can't access via the default password; hold the reset button and the WPS button for at least 10 seconds. When the lights flash you will know it has completed a reset. After which you should head to the support site and download the latest firmware which came out 1/12/2015 for your device and upload it to your router. After which you will need to do a power cycle to clear all the capacitors to make sure all packets have left the system. To do this, just remove power to the router for at least 10 seconds to fully allow the capacitors to drain. If you still need help after this with you unit please send me you configuration file and system log and place case #N150167139 in the subject line for reference. I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Sincerely,

Adam
